This beer is, meh. Too much of a sweet edge, not enough funk. There is kind of a grassy, earthy thing in there, but overall it just seems kind of a wad of sweet tones with a soapy edge. It's an "okay' drinker, but in the grand scheme of things, a big miss.

I had this on tap at Al's recently -draft version since the key lime cask version was kicked.

The color is hazed light golden straw with thin white cap with a tight bead.
The aroma is very phenolic and grassy (go figure) with some mild fruit elements and hints of yeast ester with grainy smell. The feel is good with some peppery aspects and very highly carbonated w/ slight dry finish very low alcohol in the feel, but kind of sharp with the carbonic acid.

The flavor is decent with some phenols up front and slight peppery/grassy hop quality with mild malt and somewhat fruity overripe pear flavor with a gentle clove in the finish. Overall a good beer, but I would probably not get this again.

First had: on tap at Al's, Enola, PA

Pale golden orange pour, hazy, with a small white head that receded to a ringlet. Aroma is light an grassy with tinges of citrus zest. Taste follows the smell, biscuity malts, lots of grassiness, pulpy citrus, notes of yeasty funk, and a bit of candy sweetness detectable as well, apricot chewiness, spice and light bitterness in the finish. Pretty smooth and easily drinkable.

Served on cask at Al's of Hampden. This one has some citra added to it.

A - Pours hazy straw yellow with a decent one and a half finger tall white head leaving small trails of lace down parts of the glass.

S - Smells of citric hops, wheat, pepper and dry yeast. It has all of the typical saison aromas with the fresh citra hops still shining through, very nice.

T - Starts off with some strong citric hop bitterness quickly giving way to hints of black pepper, musty yeast and the typical bready malt. Finish has some hop bitterness mixed with some chewiness, lingering on the palate long after the finish.

M - Medium body and flavor with moderate carbonation. Chewy, spicy feel throughout with growing hop bitterness as it sits in the glass.

O - A solid saison. Nothing really stands out but everything is balanced well. I look forward to having this one again in the future.

This is a newer batch that is 7% instead of the previously released version that was much smaller. Draft offering at the source. The brew appears a pale yellow color with a big white frothy head. Rising bubbles maintain a finger of cap throughout the entire duration.

The smell is big on grass and lemon. Quite a fitting name with a zesty appeal and notes of earrhy yeast spice and mild straw grain becoming increasingly bold as the brew warms up.

The tastes is a bit herbal and rindy with a lemon zest quality before getting earthy with a green yeast aspect. Some straw grain and grass or hay aspect drives the focus mid-palate to a bit of barnyard funk to fiity pilsner grain element. A mild amount of coriander cling persoste into the aftertaste.

This is a medium bodied brew that is quite dry. It displays a very high level of lively carbonation. It is a nice take on the style with a very fittibg name. Quite a mild alcohol impact initially that gets more pronounced as it warms up.

On cask at Al's. A firkin with jalapeños.

A: A beautiful golden tea color, golden brown and translucent. For being from a firkin, the ale is still quite clear. A white head comes along too.

S: No hint of the jalapeños in the nose. Instead, the sharp saison base gets its time in the sun. Spices and yeast, principally anise and curacao along with the mild fruits of the yeast. Like the original version, Grasslands is a wonderful beer to sniff - spicy and complex without the heavy hand of alcohol.

T: The start of the ale is all saison, spicy and fruity. Only at the midpoint do things get hairy - and boy do they get hairy. But first, more on the saison. The anise and mild fruits, pale fleshy varietals, can and do provide enough flavor and mustiness to carry the ale. The jalapeño, though, add a whole new dimension. They start off prickly and vegetal but quickly pick up steam, growing hotter with each passing second. The culmination is a fiery mouth, not ghost pepper hot, just pleasantly heated. And that heat lasts, complicating my romance with Black Note.

M: Sweet, musty, and damned hot. The Grasslands varietals are easily the best beers coming out of Pizza Boy right now.

I picked up this beer in a growler during a visit to the brewery with some friends.

Sampling at cellar temp into a snifter, this beer pours a slightly hazy copper color with bleached white head foaming up several cm before fading gradually to a sturdy edge layer and some wispy islands. The growler gave a pretty good pop upon opening with a little CO2 fog coming out of the top.
Aroma is fairly hoppy, which I didnt anticipate, with some grass, pine sap and general vegetal notes. I also get a bit of musty funk and maybe a little white grape. The nose is pretty complex and I find it appealing, not overwhelming.
The first sip reveals a light to average body with with a smooth texture and almost cask like carbonation.

Flavor is a bit grainy and maybe slightly tart but then goes for some grassy hops and finishes very dry and musty blanket funk after each swallow. A complex ride of flavors with no real hits of booze and the dry finish keeps me coming back for additional sips.

This is a complex and funky saison that I enjoy and would recommend, what I dont know is if it is a regular offering at Pizza Boy or not. If you like the style and see the beer, you should give it a shot.
