Appearance is a combination of ruby and brown with a thin layer of head. Definite smokey notes in the nose. Smokiness is up front from the first sip and there is a healthy body and great roast profile to go along with the smoke. There is a slight hint of chocolate on the finish.

This offering is both robust and tasty. Furthermore, unlike many self-proclaimed smoked beers, it fulfills the promise of a smokey experience.

Served on-tap at Al's of Hampden.

A - Pours deep dark brown, bordering on black, with a small film of off white head, dissipating down to a small ring around the outer edge of the glass, leaving small trails of lace down most of the glass.

S - Smells of intense smoked dark malt, dash of dark chocolate, tobacco, day old coffee, a touch of meatiness and a tiny bit of booze. The smoke is quite assertive but not overpowering. It goes a little acrid toward the end of the glass but otherwise quite nice.

T - Starts off with plenty of smokey malt that never really fades away. Hints of stale coffee, dark chocolate and bit of "bacon" as it starts to warm up. The base flavors are still lurking in the shadows helping to keep things in check. Finish is smokey but not overpowering, doesn't linger for very long after the finish.

M - Smooth, smokey feel from start to finish. I have found this style to be hit or miss when it comes to feel, some far too smokey while others too light, this one straddles the line quite well. Goes a bit watery toward the very end of the glass.

O - If you like smokey beers then you will probably like this one and if you don't like smoke then it may not be for you. The smoke is strong but it doesn't take over like others in the style so often do. Definitely worth a shot if you get the chance.

Draft offering at the source served in a tulip shaped pint glass. The brew appears brown in color with ruby clarity seen around the edges. A tan head rests atop with solid powers of retention.

The aroma includes a robust amount of smoke that has some underlying phenolics somewhat similar to pete. Faint notes similar to bandaid and plastic initially fade to the expexted roasty grain and earthy chocolate character.

The taste is quite similar to what the aroma suggests. The smoked character is similar to pete moreso than other smoked grain varieties. The roast comes out more as it warms up and the overall smoked aspect integrates more and more with each sip (or perhaps my palate just because use to that sort of smokiness half way theough the glass.)

This is a medium bodied brew with a modest amount of carbonation. It is awkward at first and then really gets quite nice as the experience continues. Fans of smoked beers will enjoy its bold character and depth of complexity. It isnt too over the top though for someone not familiar with smoked beers to have a go at either.
