Brewed in collaboration with Jean-Sébastien Bernier of À l’Abri de la Tempête from the Magdalen Islands, QC, Canada. A bière de garde brewed with fir tips, herring smoked malt and orange zest.

Served on-tap at Al's of Hampden/Pizza Boy Brewing in Enola, PA

Note: Collaboration beer with A l'abri de la Tempete. Brewed with fir tips, herring smoked malt, and orange zest.

A: Pours a clear dark reddish amber in color with minimal amounts of visible carbonation and some crimson red highlights. The beer has a quarter finger tall beige head that reduces to a medium to large patch of very thin film and a very thin ring at the edges of the glass. Light amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate aromas of smoked malts with the slightest hint of herring. Light amounts of orange zest is present as well.

T: The flavors of the beer are dominated by the smoked malts which are moderately strong. There are some very subtle hints of pine/fir and citrus/orange zest. Light hints of iodine from the smoke and lightly bitter.

M: Medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation.

O: I was hoping for more of the advertised flavors to come through in the beer but they were barely present and very subtle where they were present. Definitely not the easiest drinking beer and needs to be sipped slowly to be appreciated.

Served on-tap at Ffej of July and again at Al's of Hampden.

A - Pours slightly murky copper orange with a small half finger tall white head, dissipating down to nothing at all, leaving little to no lace down the glass.

S - Smells like a typical saison right away with a ton of extra things thrown in. A bit of zesty orange, some smokiness, a bit of mild spice and the spruce. A little light initially but it really grows as it warms up.

T - Starts off with some spicy saison yeast that never really completely fades away. The spruce, orange zest and light smokiness try to help balance it all out. Finish is a little sweet with a bit of spice, not lingering on the palate for very long. The flavors are all there but it gets pretty hard to finish toward the end of the glass.

M - Medium body with moderate carbonation. Smooth, flavorful feel from start to finish. The flavors are strong and the booze sneaks up on you, just ask anyone who played flip cup at the party.

O - I have had this beer a couple times now and it has been really consistent. It has a ton of flavors going for it and you can still taste the core farmhouse flavors but it is just hard to consume an entire glass. With so many other tasting offerings available I doubt I would get another.

Draft offering at Pizza Boy served in a tiny flute-like sort of pilsner glass. The look is a clouded brown with almost orange around the edges. A thin white penline of head tapers to nothing relatively quickly.

The aroma includes a faint amount of yeasty clove spiciness along with a hint of cola or something along the lines of rootbeer sweetness. It has a very neutral sort of medicinal to malty character that I cant quite put my finger on.

The flavor is midly spicy with yeast and a caramel to toffee malt backing. It almost has spicy clove aspect but not quite before blending to a cola or root beer quality. At times it feels medicinal but not in an off-putting way.

This is a medium bodied offering that is light in carbonation that could benefit from a bit more bubbles. It is an overall nice offering without fault. It is enjoyable and easy drinking but I dont get much of the advertised ingredients. I totally intend on drinking this again as soon as I can to try and form a better opion of what this is. If you have the opportunity, you should try this.

Pours a clear black with some filmy head. Noise has some toast, some malt, some dried fruit, a little red grape, lightly vegetal. Flavor is similar, malty, toasted bread crust, some dark fruit, plum, raisin. Medium bodied finish. A good attempt but not something I would seek out again.
