The Wine Market has recently become one of the better beer stores in South Baltimore. Yes, there are bigger beer stores outside of the city, but I'd rather stay local and walk to get my beer. The selection is small, but the quality is there. They seem to have revitalized the selection. There aren't too many stores in South Baltimore where I can pick up a bottle of Houblon Chouffe, Delirium Tremens, or an Emelisse Triple IPA. They had some other good offerings from Ommegang, Brooklyn, Unibroue, and North Coast. They also had tasting notes for almost all of the bigger bottles, and had an impressive shelf of just Belgians.

So while there might be larger stores with a more broad selection, this small local shop is slowly starting to make a name for itself as a beer store. If you live in downtown Baltimore, or happen to be around the area, this place is worth a visit.

Yes, we all know The Wine Market has wine. Lots of good wine. And good food. And a good bar... I could go on. But this place is worth your while for beer, too.

In the past, the selection was okay. You could get your standards and some nicer stuff. But ever since their new beer manager got his hands on the selection, the place is transformed.

Looking for Belgians? They have them! Delirium Tremens, a great selection of Ommegang, and my personal favorite Duchesse de Bourgogne. Lots of great regional and American craft beers too, in six packs, single bottles, and 750ml bottles to share. And if you aren't sure what you want, the beer manager is friendly and great at making recommendations.

Also they are open until 11 pm for late-night beer runs.

If you are in the Federal Hill area and want some quality beer I recommend you go to the Wine Market. I know I'll be back to see what new stuff they get.

This is another new entry onto Beeradvocate that doesn't appear to meet all the requirements of a destination beer spot. The atmosphere is nice with some of the trendy folks of FedHill and Locust Point shelling out top dollar for inventive foods. The food itself is always well worth the trip and price. There is ample parking outside, something one can't really get on this side of town.

The service is non-existent. As was previously posted, no one really even mans the front door. I picked up a sixer after dinner a week or so ago on a late Saturday night and had to take a good bit of time to get someone's attention to get it paid for. The selection is a handful or two of some regional goodies. You'll get the DFH, Victory, etc. mixed in with some Yuengling and Guinness. Prices are a dollar or two more per sixer or case then what you'd see at the better spots. They don't offer the 15% reduction on beer after dinner that they extend to those purchasing wine.

Overall: The wine, by the way, is pretty sweet. This is one of the two or three places on this side of town where you can get better beer. It would do in a pinch, say if you need a sixer on your way to Thai Arroy, but it isn't worth a special trip.

I'm sorry, but it's all I can do to keep from laughing, seeing this place on BA.

So... I'll be completely candid about this place.

I don't understand the thinking behind places like this, but I certainly say thank goodness they exist. Because this place has a wine retail license, and is essentially a wine store attached to a restaurant, the restaurant ends up having a much better then average wine list. Considerably cheaper too.

The Wine Market is one of a number of decent restaurants in Baltimore that also happen to have a wine retail license. Others include Iron Bridge, Grand Cru and the Chesapeak Wine Store, and that's just the places I know about. Along with Iron Bridge over in Columbia, this is one of the better restaurants in Baltimore, IMHO. I take out of town friends and family here all the time, and have yet to hear a negative comment. What makes this place pretty spectacular, is that you can grab any bottle of wine from the retail wine store and, for I believe a $7.50 corkage fee, enjoy that wine with your meal. Of course retail prices are a bit on the high side in the store, but in comparison to typical restaurant wine prices, especially in Baltimore, you can expect a good deal here. Also, I find the wine selection at most restaurants in Baltimore to be poor. However, places like the Wine Market, Iron Bridge, etc., ensure that you will be able to enjoy a good bottle of wine with your meal.

So, all this about food and wine, what about beer? The wine store now has a small shelf area where there is a fairly decent selection of beer. The selection is far from huge, but quality is fairly high and they do carry a good selection of local beer (Clipper City/Heavy Seas, Brewer's Art, Victory, Troegs, etc.). As for service, you tell me. I've never had anyone wait on me, but then I've never bought beer here either. I would assume a restaurant waiter or cashier could help you if you need it, but the impression I have is that beer is an after thought here. As for prices, they're comparable with the city norm (maybe a bit higher then that).

What can I say? This place will do in a pinch if you're from out of town and are staying in the area, but otherwise I'd never come here for beer. On the other hand, this is a VERY good restaurant in the South Baltimore area, one of my favorites. So let's leave it at that. If you're from out of town and happen to be in the area, you don't have access to a car and you want to pick up some local beer, well... this is a good place to do that. It won't make you forget the Perfect Pour, Well's, the Wine Source, etc., but it is close to downtown. So for beer, I guess I would call this place OK...
