Note: the beer menu states that this is an Irish red ale.

Bazam! Funny, I just had an Irish red by Flying Dog last night and it was, eh. This is what I call an Irish red. Great malty tone. Minimal leafy and peaty thing. The malts come back with a sweetness that just massages my taste buds. A very, very nice beer.

Pours a dark amber color with a slight white head which gives way to skim and spotty lacing. The aroma is of nutty malt and caramel malt with a slight hint of hops. The taste is of caramel malt and toffee malt as the backbone. The is also a presence of hops in the middle of the beer to the back end. The mouthfeel is moderately carbonated. Overall its an okay beer, there is a decent flavor but nothing to make you demand more, but nothing to dislike.

I typically feel that an amber ale is an amber ale. But this one stands out. It has a unique malty character, almost bready, but very smooth and balanced with the hops, with a slightly fruity aroma. What impressed me the most was the drinkability. I have to say I just found myself a favorite amber ale. Very well done!

Number two in my flight at Main Street. River Rat was awarded "Best Amber Ale" at the 4th Annual OH Brew Week (2009).

A: The amber ale is, well, amber although a much darker amber that you may first think off. This amber verges on brown ale territory. Again, it was served sans head.

S: The aroma is nutty, very malty with an earthy hop backbone. Aroma is intriguing...

T: Unfortunately my first sip revealed a so-so amber ale. The nuttiness, a warming toffee/caramel malt base, is a nice start that quickly turns hoppy with a leafy, vegetal finish. The maltiness works at times but generally the ale fails to go anything exciting. The only other '-' in my Main St. book.

M: The mouthfeel is that of an amber, malty with just a dash of hops. The flavors don't break new ground.

D: A good average amber ale, drinkable because it won't lay you out. But, as they say, the best is yet to come.

Main Street River Rat Amber..hey, my first "added" beer, after 5 years! It poured a soft head, pillowy, little lacing down the glass. Taste a bit off. Kinda pumkin-like and cinnamon spiceness, almost like a winter ale. Light to medium bodied, pretty easy to drink. Not the best ale ever but a decent red ale.
