Notes/Commercial Description:
1897 Amber is a naturally crafted, unpasteurized, Belgian style amber. Our hand selected Belgian Amber, French and Canadian malts are brewed with the finest English and European characteristic hops to produce a beer of nuance. The mellow toasted malt and even body is perfectly balanced with a soft bitterness and mild hop aroma. The resulting light bodied beer has a subtle flavour complexity and an exceptionally clean finish.

A- This pours a very clear, orange-y hued color with plenty of carbonation rising to the top. The head is actually quite pleasant to see, with plenty of soap like fluffiness showing upon the pour and the retention is rather impressive. Unfortunately, the lacing does not accompany the foamy head, as nothing really likes to stick to my glass as I drink this down.

S- Sweet malt dominates, with reminders of toffee and/or caramel. This beer even carries aromas similar to a honey brown ale, and also some slight fruitiness....bananas come to mind. It has an overall cleanliness about it, as there doesn't seem to be any strong aromas in general.

T- Overall, the flavors are weak, but it doesn't taste bad. This is malty sweet, with honeyed notes, and some fruit....perhaps some banana and apple qualities. The main setback with this one is the aftertaste...there is mild bitterness, which would be nice if this was slightly stronger, but it actually has some metallic astringency to it that cheapens the product.

M- Reasonably thin mouthfeel and the carbonation is actually quite smooth, as opposed to what I thought it would be like. It is sweeter and dessert like....not exactly thirst quenching but it isn't cloying either.

O- I enjoy this on tap better...I don't mind it bottled but I don't find it as full and characteristic of what I've come to expect. I would drink this again, yet I probably wont go out of my way to purchase it again in a sixer....with this all said though, this is a better than average brew and is most definitely a step up from basic lagers and is suitable for those that like the honey browns....I don't find this to be among the worlds most complex Belgian Amber beers, as is proudly on the neck label....good for the price though.

An enjoyable amber ale. Dark copper in the glass with good foamy head. Scents of citrus and some honey notes. Very smooth and good mouthfeel with a very solid finish. A good representation of an amble ale even though my experience is limited. Will purchase again.

On tap in White Rock B.C. From notes.

A - Dark copper. Bright with no visible carbonation. One finger of white head and no lace with just a film of retention.

S - Honey, caramel, citrus.

T - Honey, sweet malt, toffee.

M - Good carbonation, light body, sweet finish.

O/D - A little boring. Not bad and easy to drink, but just pretty standard.

Appearance- Golden copper, slight cloudiness, nice creamy head.

Smell- Biscuity with a hint of citrus.

Taste- Light flavours of wheat and honey. Slight bitterness at the end but doesn't leave a bad aftertaste.

Mouthfeel- Light to medium body feel. A nice, smooth ale that has easy drinkability.

Overall- A nice amber ale. Flavours balance well and isn't too heavy. A good beer to enjoy with a meal or relaxing with friends. Hope to see more varieties from this brewing company.

A: It pours a dark amber colour; it is very opaque compared to other beers of the type.

S: It smells most prominently of toffee and fruits, but hops are also noticeable

T: Initially it tastes of toffee and weak fruits, then the hops and malts of the ale take over to give it a nice bitter aftertaste.

M: This has a medium body with medium carbonation; it is smooth and quite dry.

O: This is pretty good, definitely the best out of Hell’s Gate. It has a nice balance between the traditional flavours (hops and malts) with non-traditional (toffee and fruits).
