1897 Amber is a naturally crafted, unpasteurized, Belgian style amber. Our hand selected Belgian Amber, French and Canadian malts are brewed with the finest English and European characteristic hops to produce a beer of nuance. The mellow toasted malt and even body is perfectly balanced with a soft bitterness and mild hop aroma. The resulting light bodied beer has a subtle flavour complexity and an exceptionally clean finish.

From Notes
Appearance: Great lacing while it lasted, which sadly wasn't very long, as it disappeared after the quarter consumed mark. Cloudy and more on the brown side of amber.
Smell: Low potency that needs warming to reveal fairly plain caramel and toffee malt with a hint of earth.
Taste: Very much generic the amber, as we go through the motions of caramel and toffee malt that gives way to light earthiness, pine and floral hops of which all are a bit too subdued to really make an impression.
Mouthfeel: The transitioning is good for what it is, which is a very mild offering. Carbonation does some through a bit at the end, but server more to lighten things then accent them. Nice mild mixed aftertaste.
Drinkability: Easy and light, which comes across to me as something a bit easier to drink then pale lager, but just barley. It just struggles to stand out.
Final Thoughts: I don't know if this is the case, but my impression of this beer is that this is either a smaller brewery that used to make some decent things, and got swallowed by a bigger brewery and gutted the recipes and cashed in on brand recognition, or that this was one of those breweries that was always kind of a bigger regional fish, but wasn't big enough to stand up to the giants of the industry. There is something here, but it's faded in an undesirable way. I don't know if my guesses are right here, but that's what this comes across as.

Pretty decent amber ale that isn't over powering like the majority of IPA or wheat beers. Smell is meh, but taste and colour are pretty good.

Very generic but enjoyable great look with a bit of a letdown in taste. Could be the can version I am drinking. After 2 the taste improved. Will try again in a draft and bottle. Cheers

I see a lot of naysayers about this beer.
It is the most well-balanced beer I have ever had the joy of drinking. It's light and dark, it's hoppy and malty, it's great to cool off on a hot day and calming on a cold night. This is truly an exceptional beer, and this is coming from someone that doesn't have his head up his ass about his tastes. I ain't no hipster.
I'm a beer drinker. This beer is one that everyone should try.
Don't believe the wannabe connoseurs.
This is a great beer for people that enjoy beer.

On tap at Pinnacle Harborview in Vancouver, BC. Pours a clear reddish amber with a thin off-white head. Initial impression is roasted malt, a taste of caramel, some honey, and maybe a hint of hops in there somewhere. Taste is muddy and cloying. Not something I'd revisit.
