This pours a clear straw color with light amber tinting. A fingers head of off-white colored foam forms on top. It recedes to a nice surface covering of foam, about 1/16" thick. The lacing is in quite thick strands that are nicely sticky.
The appearance is very beautiful, but gets docked a point because it is way too clear (and just slightly too dark, actually) for the style, in my opinion.
A very nice spiciness (pepper) joins a good malt backbone, along with some very tantalizing citrus hop notes. A good earthiness, almost barnyard-like. Lemons and grassiness. The spice notes are almost rye-like, now that it's warming up to room temp.
Lemon and grass and a good deal of pepperey spice are the dominant flavors here. The malt notes are very subdued now. Large amount of graininess. Floral hops and a very bitter presence in the dry finish.
For me, this lives up to it's label-stated-style of "saison americain". But that's not in a good way. It's not so much saison to me, as it is more like a pilsner with some lemon and spices added to it. This is much less than I'd expected.
It's medium-bodied with a fairly high level of carbonation. It has a sharp and crisp edge to it.
Personally, I'd rather reach for a lot of other things, but I can say that this one is nicely drinkable. It's quite nicely balanced and at only 6.50%abv it won't hit you in the head with it's alcohol.

1 PT. 6 FL.. OZ. bottle
Served in a tulip glass
Bottled April 2013
A - It is pale yellow in color and hazy. There are small particles of yeast suspended in it. It is topped with a couple inches of white head.
S - It has a nice fresh lemon scent. I also detect a little must.
T - The taste has some lemon and grass flavors. Then some bitterness sets in. At first I thought the bitterness was too much for this beer, but after half a bottle the flavors are meshing well.
M - Medium.
O - This is a refreshing saison. It hits the spot after working in a near 90° day. The bitterness is more than I care for in this style, but it is not overwhelming and compliments the lemon and must, so I won't complain.
