This is, in my opinion, the best beer Pretty Things has offered. This triple has a sweetness, and goes down smooth. Moreover, it has absolutely no bitter aftertaste like some triple's. It would be ideal if Pretty Things offered this throughout the year.

A real gem.

On-tap 4/14/2012 at Track 84, in Warwick, RI served in a tulip glass.

A: The beer is a cloudy deep gold color, with a short off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a spotty lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains Belgian yeast, citrus, spices, caramelized malts and a touch of hops.

T: The taste starts out sweet with flavors of spices, citrus, bananas and caramel. Then a hearty malt character comes in. The hops presence is mild but brings a good balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: Very tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, good kick, very good representation of style, this is a nice Belgian Tripel with good complexity making it worth drinking for a long time.

22oz bottle poured into a Duvel Tulip. Nice new bottle caps, but what happened to the stickers that denoted freshness and batch number?

A: Pours a very cloudy golden color. Two finger eggshell-white head settles shortly and leaves only wispy patches of lacing.

S: Creamy banana (pudding, maybe) and ripe bananas. Soft spiciness, pepper, chalky yeast. Trace of biscuity malt. Faint leafy hop character in the background and traces of vague light fruits. Not the most complex or invigorating nose, but not bad.

T: Yeast action up front with clove and chalky and spicy tastes. Mellow citrus rind and tropical fruit (mostly pineapple) follow very closely. Mild oily hop bitterness mid-palate, along with a faint leafy, earthy impression. Slight tobacco. Lightly honeyed malt and biscuit tastes. Vague, fleeting touch of green banana. Yeast flavors build once again with mild spicy/chalky tastes and ride into the finish with a lingering leafy bitterness.

M: On the lighter side of medium bodied, but full enough and certainly fluffy and creamy. Carbonation is a bit low-key, especially considering the style, but it does just enough.

O: The intent here seems to be for the hops to accentuate, but not dominate. That is exactly what they do. Don't be expecting a Belgian IPA riddled with American hops. The hop tastes are mellow and seem predominately English, though the American hops shine through too (and more-so as the beer warms). I never really thought those oily/leafy tastes that English hops bring to the table really meshed well with the tripel style. American hops are the better play, accentuating the tropical esters (which are also largely absent here) by adding citrusy/tropical tastes of their own. Perhaps my memory fails me, but this beer is not what I remember it being when I had it a year or two ago. I find myself slightly underwhelmed. It has some complexity, but it comes mostly from the hops rather than the base beer. Still, I can't leave it without some praise. It is very drinkable, and its more charming attributes begin to grow on you as you drink. Definitely worth a try, and I will make an effort to revisit it in the near future. I had given it glowing reviews in the past; maybe I'm having an off night.
