A - Color is a golden yellow-orange, a bit cloudy. Pours with a decent white, foamy head that dissipates leaving a skim layer on top and some decent lacing.

S - Lemon peel, floral notes, light hoppiness, grainy, some mild Belgian aromas & some spiciness too.

T - Grainy with strong citrus. Light spiciness, mild hop crispness, some biscuity notes.

M - Medium body rather creamy texture. moderate carbonation.

D - Overall a nice drink. Crisp, fresh - a little chewy. I'd do this one again for sure.

22oz bottle, bottled May 2010.
In a tulip it was a hazy orange color with a small white head.
A sweet malt, candy aroma. Yeasty and a bit of spice.
The candy aroma tasted more like honey. Still some yeast present. A bit of clove.
Spritzy mouthfeel.
Nice beer.

"Bottled May 2011 Batch 2"

Pours clear lighter honey amber, lt. tan head, respectable looking low sheeting and spotty and scattered lace.

Fruity, yeasty and light spice nose. Lots of bananas.

Fruit themes carries through onto the palate, again bananas, lots of bananas, vanilla, honey. Very easy drinking wih a supper smooth mouthfeel.

I like my saisons more on the peppery lime and yeast side, but this one is certaintly quite pleasant and worth a try. went nicely with a salad topped with some lemon infused goat cheese.

Nice summery beer.

Appearance: minimal head, cloudy, orange-yellow in color, high carbonation

Smell: pepper, oats, rye, and lemons

Taste: lemons, pepper, oats--these really come out, rye--present but subtle, some funk and hay

Mouthfeel: light bodied, medium high carbonation, dry, sour/slightly bitter

Drinkability: My favorite from the brewery so far. I love the grains and oats in this one. They mix extremely well with the flavors I associate with a saison. A sipper and an amazing brew. Go get this one if you can still find it.

The beer pours a yellow color with a white head. The aroma is spices, yeast, toffee and wheat. The flavor is yeast, coriander, wheat and some rye. This is a pretty spicy saison that is very easy to drink. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. A nice saison that I would try again.

Field Mouse's Farewell--which may be one of the stranger beer names on the market--opens with an aroma that is mainly Belgian in orientation, being ripe with banana, coriander, and orange, with slight moves toward a Flemish sour. Additional and subtler notes in the nose include sparkling lemon and white grape aromas, as well as a light layer of biscuit.

On the tongue, the beer opens with a strong Belgian-like profile, full of the bananas, coriander, and oranges in the nose, but hints of clove and pepper are added, and the lemon and white grape hints become slightly more prominent, the lemon especially adding hints of zest. As the brew is held on the tongue and the sugars die off, a decent hop backing brings grapefruit bitterness, and the rye bucks in with marble rye bread crust flavors. Subsequent sips reveal a stronger sugar base, which brings brown sugars to the mix. The aftertaste is a continuation of the strong Belgian flavors, being especially heavy on the coriander and clove spice notes, and fades very slowly. Mouthfeel is medium, and carbonation is medium-high.

Overall, this is solid fare, having well-crafted, finely nuanced, yet still huge flavors. Slight hints of alcohol are occasionally present in the flavor profile--which is strange for a brew that only runs 7% ABV--but by and large the beer is delicious, and worth trying.

Picked up a 22 oz. bomber of Pretty Things' Field Mouse's Farewell, a "rustic golden ale brewed with barley, oats, wheat & rye." That sounds intriguing enough. I'm looking forward to how this Farmhouse Ale/Saison-style ale compares to the brewery's flagship beer, Jack D'Or. Served in my trusty Dogfish Head snifter.

Appearance (4.5/5): Field Mouse pours a brilliant, hazy, deep gold color and is topped with a a two-finger head of white foam that dissipates quickly, turning into a small, 1/8" ring. This beer has the looks of a classic Farmhouse ale. Excellent coloration, and I really like the label and Pretty Things' aesthetic-conscious approach, in general, to their business.

Smell (4.5/5): Smells grassy, herbal, hoppy, grainy, and earthy (a common trait of many PT beers is their earthy depth). I detect a little spice and some hop presence, but this beer does not have that spritely, green, hoppy presence immediately noticeable in PT's Jack D'Or. There's a really nice depth and earthy boldness to this that the other saison does not exhibit so much of. I personally really like what's going on here smell-wise; WAY above average.

Taste (4.5/5): Flavor follows the nose. Earthy flavors of grass, grain, and lemon (from the wheat) prevail in the foretaste. Hops are there, though they impart an herbal flavor that is distinctly European. Field Mouse's finish has a lingering hoppiness and peppery rye spice to it. I really like how the additional ingredients–wheat, rye, barley, and oats–add subtle flavors and aren't used as centerpieces, an approach that makes one element of the brew far bolder than others to the detriment of the beer's overall flavor. Dann Paquette really exhibits a great ability here to brew a beer with complexity, nuance, and character. Very, very good saison flavors here. They're bolder than Jack D'Or's, though this beer still makes for good warm-weather drinking.

Mouthfeel (4/5): Field Mouse's Farewell has a medium-light body and medium-low carbonation (could perhaps use a bit of a kick up in carbonation, but not by much). It is light and smooth on the tongue and a little prickly because of the spice in aftertaste. Good mouthfeel, though perhaps not stellar.

Overall (4.5/5): This is another great beer by Pretty Things, and an exciting new spin by them on a style that they've helped popularize–Saison. Field Mouse's Farewell is packed with classic saison flavors of grass, lemon, and herbal hops with added wheat and rye characteristics that lend some sweetness and spiciness to the mix. A subtle brew by a brewery that isn't afraid to shy away from nuance and complexity! Hats off to Pretty Things.

A: Pours a hazy golden orange color with a small beige head that did not last very long. There was a very thin layer of bubbles on top and left behind small bits of lacing.

S: On the sweeter end of the spectrum for a saison. I get some apple and a bit of orange and melon. There is some bready malt and a little bit of spice and yeast.

T: More apple, but the flavor is more like a bruised apple, and it is again sweet with a bit of candied sugar. The yeast shines through with some fruitiness and spice.

M: Medium to full bodied with medium carbonation. Drinks smooth and somewhat creamy.

O: A solid beer from Pretty Things. I prefer the Jack D'or, but wouldn't pass on this one.

A: Pretty golden brew, white medium sized head about a finger high. Lace is spotty and sheety.

S: A lot of clove, some pepper, caramel and apples. A bit like apple pie. Simple but quite nice and an unusual version of the style.

T: Peppery spice again at the front and funky flowers. Malt quantities seem just about perfect for this darker mood Saison. Seems like a Saison geared toward the Fall season.

M: Somewhat chewy and a little gritty/grainy. Nice carbonation and a good medium sized body.

O:Good stuff. Not really sessionable.

On tap at Cole's. Bang on saison. Medium golden colour with a minimum head. Big white pepper head. Carbonation is right there. Not very complex, and would like the carbonation toned down to get the subtleties of the spices. Good drinkability for the summer, but would also like lower abv.

Thanks to jctribe25 for the offer, ShogoKawada for the surprise, and the distributors for bringing this to the California market. Poured from a 22oz bottle into my Troubadour tulip. Bottled May, 2011; Batch 2.

ECE/ACE Amber liquid - nearly clear with a small delicate layer of pale champagne foam coating the surface. Fine even lacing, decent retention, clear viscous legs.

Alfalfa, thyme, malt, rye, and rosewater in the nose.

Caramel, nori, pink peppercorn, cherry pits and phenols lead the palate into a moderate herbaceous bitterness contributed by the Bramling hops. The rye comes forward more and more as the beer warms, though never becomes harsh or overwhelmng. Brisk finish alternates between sweet and dry notes, with a candy-like fruit element in the aftertaste.

Medium-light bodied, effervescent, though the sweetness takes away the expected refreshing quality of the style to some degree.

Taking it's cue from Biere de Garde at least as much as Saison, I think I might rate this higher if it were classified as the former.

22oz bottle bottled May 2010, refrigerated. Poured into US pint glass. Beer pours a fizzy and cloudy bright orange color with no head. Wild aroma with citrus.

Carbonation is a little on the harsh side. Once that passes the mouthfeel is actually rather thin. Hefeweiss-like wheat ale is the most obvious connection, but this is still clearly a saison, although neither particularly funky nor spicy. The aftertaste is an interesting combination of bitter and sour from the hops and yeast, leaving a final dry note. If there's any rye flavor in this, that's where it is.

I believe I enjoyed it more on draught (at the Lord Hobo, most likely).

Appearance: Cloudy golden orange body beneath a frothy two-fingered head of white foam that dwindles to a thin surface covering, leaving behind short walls of thin lace. Fine bubbled natural carbonation. Fairly zesty.
Aroma: Spicy and earthy, a bit yeasty. Cereal notes, but not distinctly malty. Fruity and lemony-citrusy; and even a hint floral.
Flavor: The rye really comes through in the grain bill, backed by clear notes of wheat. The oats are present as well, appearing clearly in the finish. Interesting. There's a firm bit of spiciness as well, and some lemony citrus character. It's "sweetish" but not really sweet... or should I say it's sweet, but balanced by the spiciness and citrus? The Belgian yeast gives it a hint of sweetness through some vanilla and clove character as well; or is that actually spice? It's certainly malty, but it doesn't appear as distinct malt, or what you might think of as malty coming from a more straight-forward grain bill. A solid bitterness balances it as well, and although there is one quick splash of sweetness at the finish, it then shifts into bitter and spicy dryness followed by chalky citrus rind character. Some malt lingers along with some hoppy grassiness.
Mouthfeel: Initially zesty, and then softening to become spritzy. Medium-full bodied with a clear dextrinous edge.
Drinkability: If there's one drawback to this beer it's probably that there's a bit too much to it, mainly in its overall malty fullness. A spot less might leave it a bit more polished - but at the same time everything else would have to be tweaked to keep its spicy/yeasty/bitter balance or it would just fall apart. It's nice as it is!

Bomber via trade.

Pours hazy yellowish-golden in color with a lasting white head.

Aroma is nice, grainy and funky with floral hop notes.

The flavor is good and dry. Pale malt, grain, hay, mild spice, and horseblanket.

Dry and medium-bodied on the palate with average carbonation.

Another nice saison/Belgian pale ale from Pretty Things.
