Awesome place. Picked up a lot of local stuff and some others that aren't available in Florida (Allagash, Evil Twin, Full Steam). Sadly, one of the beers I bought (an IPA from Coast Brewing) had gone skunky. Other than that, perfect beer haul trip. (248 characters)

Really great bottle shop that is well stocked with both beer and knowledgeable, friendly staff. I stopped in during a recent trip to Charleston and bought a bunch of beers that I can't get back home. Some of my favorite finds were: Tilquin gueuze, a couple Jolly Pumpkins, and a Rodenbach Caractere Rouge. (307 characters)

Charleston Beer Exchange is a tiny little shop on a side street that I nearly stumbled past until a friend pointed it out. The building looks like one of the first built in the city and a small square sign let's you know where you are. Although the store is small there's not a foot of wasted space. A shelf of NC/SC locals is the first to greet you as you enter. Past that is a small 5 or 6 tap growler station then the bank of coolers, 5 or 6 doors. The rest of Americas offerings are followed by Scandinavian, Belgian, German, English, and other imports in a small aisle.

As I said, there couldn't be better use of the space. The options are plentiful and the staff is quick to lend tips and thoughts, holding nothing back. The staff is helpful and fun to talk to. The prices are right in line with other places I stopped on my travels. The seasonal selection was stacked. I was very happy with my stop in, especially after hearing so much about them in the past, it lived up to expectations. Highly recommended. (1,017 characters)

I had the opportunity to visit here while staying on Kiawah Island more Memorial Day weekend. If I lived in downtown Charleston, this would be my home away from home. The guy that was working there was very knowledgable, extremely friendly, and helpful. The store is very quaint, with an atmosphere that is hard to beat. I love that they also had a growler station, although I did not get anything. These guys also ship, which is a plus for someone who lives a few states away. I'm already planning my trip for next year and this place is my first stop when I get back! (569 characters)

Wow, I found this place by complete accident while looking for parking on a Thursday night in Charleston. Why is everyone out and about on a Thursday I do not know. Anyway, I wasn't expecting much when I walked in but was really impressed by the selection. The imports were the most impressive part of the store. I believe they had every Trappist beer except for Westvleteren. I have never seen such an impressive selection from such a small store. The clerk who helped us was super friendly and nice. I have never seen a better collection of rare beers in my life. I have been to other stores that may have had more beers, but here at the Beer Exchange every inch of the store was packed with some of the hardest to find brews from the world. I picked up two specialty brews from Goose Island (Sofie and Pere Jacques) that I had never been able to find before; they were also at a great price. Overall, best beer store have been to thus far. (942 characters)

This beer shop was a great place. However the gentlemen that was working had a horrible personality. When I asked about a local beer he replied with "we don't sell a bad beer". When I ask a question like this I expect a knowledgeable response, not some arrogant feedback. This really left me with a bad presumption of a place I have heard such great things about. (363 characters)

I travel on business to Charleston once every couple of years and I always seek this place out. Their inventory is always online and is fairly up to date. It's a very casual atmosphere. I did not realize until my visit today that you can buy single bottles out of six and four packs. Let's not forget that as I was browsing the Belgians I happened to notice that they had three varieties of Cantillon sitting on the shelve. I picked up some of the top 250 and some stuff by Westbrook and then asked for either a local IPA or Imperial Stout recommendation. I was told that Foothills Seeing Double IPA was a favorite and grabbed it quickly as this employee seemed to know his stuff based on the talk we had. I will definitely be back again. I can't think you will find better selection or service in Charleston. (809 characters)

As others said, this is a jewel in the city of Charleston. I searched this place out after hearing about it from friends. I was not disappointed at all!!

The selection was great. Had stuff I couldn't find in my hometown of Charlotte and got some good recommendations from the staff.

I am planning my next trip to Charleston and will be sure to stop in here. (359 characters)

While walking through Charleston, just happened to look down side street near the Old Exchange & Provost Dungeon and there was a sign for this place. We weren't looking for a beer shop, but figured, nice break from a walk to check it out.

SO glad we did. As others have mentioned, the place is small, but the selection is great. I might give it a 5, but there were some standards I was used to I didn't see, but there was a decent local selection that replaced those, which is fine. I will also say, the selection really shines on the imports, to quote another review: "largest selection for such a small store."

When we were there, they happened to have a large Evil Twin selection (I got the impression the brewer had used a local brewery's facilities for some), including one we thought we might not see again.

We returned later to actually buy some beer, and were a little upset that we couldn't get more due to the transporting of them the rest of our vacation. We enjoyed Charleston, and will likely return, and will definitely return to this place when we do. (1,069 characters)

Was taking to this store by a local friend who wasnt kidding when he told me this was a world class spot. The customer service is incredible, they are very informative and one is consider a master beer something...he knows everything there is to know about beer i swear but he will be the first to admit he doesn't..but he does ;). IF you guys can make it out here i would 100% recommend it, huge selection of all types of beer, rare beers, growlers, etc.. if you want an amazing place to get some beers with a massive selection then you have came to the right place! (567 characters)

So my only complaint, and I want to get it out of the way first because it's minor, is that this place is a little expensive but I'm sure it's b/c of the location and it seems that Charleston taxes are terribly high. Incredible selection in terms of quantity (700+) and quality (number not inflated with macros at all). Online list is mostly up to date and accurate, not from three months ago like some places, and perhaps the best part of my experience (other than being the only person in there b/c it is perhaps the smallest beer store I've been in that has a large selection of beer) was that I had a list and the guy just grabbed the beers for me and gave me some tips. Incredibly friendly and helpful, I will go here every time I am in the area and will recommend to anyone traveling to Charleston. (804 characters)

What a great place with a world class selection. Convienently located the people there are super friendly and real knowledgeable. They are always running specials. I am very fortunate to live a short ride away. I know they do ship all over too. If you are ever in the area this is a must stop. If not to buy (which you will) just to look around. It is located in an old quaint Ckarlestonioan style building on a neat side street. (429 characters)

There’s nowhere else you should go for bottles and growlers in downtown Charleston. Period. The guys at the shop are the absolute best in the business. You might have an issue with parking as it is downtown and Charleston can get mighty packed. But, make it a point to go if you’re down that way. You’ll be glad you did. Amazing service and fantastic bottle selection. Also, 10 taps for growlers. (402 characters)

A true gem tucked away in Downtown Charleston, the Beer Exchange started it all for me in the world of craft beers. Their staff are knowledgeable and helpful--very quick to suggest something you may not have considered trying before. Their prices are reasonable, especially given their prime downtown location. If you haven't been, go. If you have, keep coming back. There is always something new! (397 characters)

Very cool building, somewhat hidden in Down Town Charleston. This is the place that started craft beers for me. Growing up in Charleston, this was my introduction. Very cool group of guys. I had a car that everyone would sign with sharpie, and they were cool enough to go out and sharpie it as well. Long story on that one, but overall A very cool store with a big selection. (375 characters)

Man! Small in size but HUGE in selection! The help know what they're talking about and are helpful. If you're in downtown Charleston, location is great, otherwise it's a little painful to get to. Only reason I knocked the atmosphere is because the area in the shop is so small it's easy to get crowded and not have room to get what you want, let alone move. Overall, one of the best I've been to. (396 characters)

Great atmosphere! The inside is a little tight but the shelves make use of all the space available. I kind of felt like i was in an old tavern in the 17th century with awesome beers all around. A great growler station in the back with a chalk board list of the days brews adds to the experience. Cool little building with so much history. It's definitely one of my main stops whenever I visit ol Chuktown! (405 characters)

When I moved here, Total Wine was the only place to find good beer. Nothing against Total Wine, but it always seemed like what someone thought was really rare and spectacular beer. No one even had a clue what a growler was. When these guys opened up shop in a tiny hovel right off of East Bay, the entire game changed. I see new stuff every time I go there, entire breweries I never knew existed. Scott, Rich, and Brandon are the most knowledgeable beer guys I've ever met and they are VERY well connected to the craft brew industry. They are usually the first in the region to get a shot at the really rare limited releases, some of which show up at their spectacular annual beer festival Brewvival. Now, they are a little more pricey than other spots in town, but they are also paying rent on some of the most expensive real estate in the country so I give them a break there. They hold a very special place in the local beer community. When you are in town, be sure take home a few cases from these guys. (1,007 characters)

The staff are knowledgable and helpful. I've placed orders for kegs via email and all went very smoothly. Excellent operation. The store is a bit cramped but that is due to the historic property they use, which is the norm for downtown. Highly recommended for kegs since they can get many products in just a few days, local or west coast.

Unlike other stores in downtown Charleston, parking was easy and accessible. They offer member rewards per dollar amount spent. I'be earned a sticker and a pint glass. Next level is shirt and I look forward to it! These guys truly outperform thier competitors in the ease and simplicity of getting kegs and growlers. I live 10 miles away and drive past a larger beer outlet to get to Charleston Beer Exchange. Well worth the trio downtown. (780 characters)

I have shopped at the Greenville Beer Exchange numerous times but just recently had a chance to go by the Charleston location while on vacation.I went specifically to get the Westbrook apple brandy aged citrus ninja exchange and the staff was very helpful and pleasant to be around and talk to,just like the Greenville staff is.The store is a tad bit smaller than the Greenville on but is packed with nothing but quality and variety on the shelves and the prices are reasonable. In fact my sister in law from Colorado was with us and found her favorite beer and she was impressed with the selection as well.I can't say enough about these guys, they have defined what a beer store should be and have set a standard in the craft beer world. If you are ever in the Charleston area do yourself a favor and go visit. (808 characters)

The Charleston Beer Exchange has a great selection. I found it one afternoon walking around downtown with my wife and a cousin. We walked down a side street and I saw the building and was super-surprised to find this diamond in the rough. I will visit this place everytime I go back to Charleston. Also, I did not have a chance to get a sticker while I was down there; I even made plans to go back and pick one up and never made it. If anyone from the CBE is reading this, I would love for you to send me one... (511 characters)

The famous Charleston Beer Exchange!

The wife and I stopped here during our brief tour of Charleston, between lunch at Husk Restaurant and a long drive to Boca Raton-Delray Beach with a friend who god-knows-why decided to move down there.

The place is a tiny storefront in a devastatingly gorgeous street of beautiful Charleston. Smaller than a studio apartment in Manhattan, but chock-full of quality beer. Picture the entire collection of Mikkeller single-hop brews, and a lot of their barrel-aged Black Hole series.

Allagash, Great Divide, Weyerbacher, Ommegang, Sierra, Stone, Dogfish and all the big names are well represented here, but they also have locals I never heard of, like Westbrook, Palmetto and Coastal.

Lava Imperial Stout from Iceland, and JW Lee's Harvest from '7. Sweet or what! Their growler selection includes 9 taps and the chance to fill a humongous 128-oz growler. Wow!

I bought a Weyerbacher Blasphemy bomber (which I am yet to find in NYC) and a local Westbrook Saison IPA. Prices are very reasonable, and the best thing at the Exchange is the incredibly friendly, personable service. Two beer dudes who chat you up, guide you around the store, offer advice and crack a joke or two. So damn nice!

Love this place!! (1,253 characters)

I was surprised to find this place right in the historic district of downtown Charleston. As a result of the location it is tiny, but they pack quite a lot into a small space. The selection is excellent, up there with the best places in the South, such as Brusin Ales and 5 Points Bottle Shop (perhaps not quite as good as 5 Points). Quite a good selection of imports and all of the craft stuff that was available in the area. They even have a growler station and while there wasn't anything astonishing on tap when I visited, they do seem to get some real rarities. This is the area where they really set themselves apart; they actually fill bottles of the rarest beers they tap and save them for future sale, meaning that there is a limited selection of draft only beers that they once had on tap even after they are gone. These bottles are very expensive ($16-18 each), but it is a nice option to have. The staff definitely know their beer and they even offer a frequent buyer rewards program (I didn't pay much attention to the details since I live out of the area). Easily the best beer store in the area. (1,110 characters)

CBX is amazing. The place is a little small and kind of tucked away in a remote part of downtown Charleston, but don't let that fool you; this place is stocked floor to ceiling with great beer. And when I say great beer, I mean it. Even when I've walked in and grabbed a few bottles that I've never heard of before, they were always delicious. I don't think they stock a bad beer in the place. On top of all the bottles and 6-packs, they have a nice growler station where you can get 32, 64, or 128 oz fills. The taps rotate often, and on top of that, they have special events every week on Tuesday called "Rare Beer Tuesdays" when they tap a special release and sometimes have other perks to go along with it (meet the brewer, free glassware, etc.) As if the selection and quality wasn't good enough, the staff is very helpful, friendly, and courteous. If you need help, they are more than willing to give it to you and are very knowledgeable about their selection and just beer in general. On the other hand, if you want to be left alone to browse or you know what you're looking for, they let you do your own thing. For a place this good, prices are very reasonable.

If you like craft beer or are interested in getting into craft beer and you live in the Charleston area, you should already be going to Charleston Beer Exchange. This place is outstanding. (1,359 characters)
