Wow! What a beer store! This all-beer shop packs a large inventory into a small space without feeling overly crowded. And it's neat, clean and well organized. It's also in a great, historic location within the area that most visitors would be anyway.

They have a huge selection of Belgians along with a lot of locals from Charleston and the southeast in general. But there are plenty from the rest of the US and Europe as well. We picked up some Coast Hop Art, Big Daddy Vlady's, Sculpin, Sea Monster and Palmetto IPA to take home. Only a small portion of their stock is refrigerated. Hopefully they have good air conditioning for the warm summers. They also have several taps for growlers to go (unfortunately state laws limit them from serving or offering unscheduled tastings).

The guys that run the shop are very helpful and enjoy talking beer. The only downside is that it's a bit pricey but given the quality and location, it's within reason.

Charleston Beer Exchange is not a place to be missed. We could use a shop like this in every city.

Charleston Beer Exchange is a tiny little shop on a side street that I nearly stumbled past until a friend pointed it out. The building looks like one of the first built in the city and a small square sign let's you know where you are. Although the store is small there's not a foot of wasted space. A shelf of NC/SC locals is the first to greet you as you enter. Past that is a small 5 or 6 tap growler station then the bank of coolers, 5 or 6 doors. The rest of Americas offerings are followed by Scandinavian, Belgian, German, English, and other imports in a small aisle.

As I said, there couldn't be better use of the space. The options are plentiful and the staff is quick to lend tips and thoughts, holding nothing back. The staff is helpful and fun to talk to. The prices are right in line with other places I stopped on my travels. The seasonal selection was stacked. I was very happy with my stop in, especially after hearing so much about them in the past, it lived up to expectations. Highly recommended.
