Dropped by here to see Scott (of Ted's Butcherblock fame) and ended up spending well on 4 hours in what is probably a 400 square foot beer store. Yeah, you could say I had a good time.
What's left to say? The Charleston Beer Exchange is the BEST beer store in Charleston, easily, and is right up there with Green's in Columbia for best beer store in the state. The selection is amazing for the amount of space they (don't) have. If it is in South Carolina, and is good beer, you have an excellent chance of finding it here.
Have I mentioned the growler station? Yeah, you can walk out of this joint with a growler of Coast beer, or any of the other high-class offerings they have. When I was around they had Smuttynose Scotch Ale, Double Bastard, Coast Kolsch, Hibernation Ale, and a couple other choice beverages.
Prices are good, I was shocked to find stuff just as cheap, in some cases cheaper than our beloved Green's. Not sure how they pull it off, but it's welcome. Brooklyn Black Ops rolled off the truck while I was in the store and I took one home for $20, the cheapest I've seen anywhere.
It goes without saying the the owners (Scott and Rich) are friendly, exuberant beer geeks. They are generous and you will like them. This is the Brawley's or Bruisin' Ales of the coast.
So, to sum up: CBX is a small quality beer store run by beer lovers and they will do you right. If you live anywhere close by, you need to take a trip down here. These guys are going to expand, and we will be blessed for it.

Charleston Beer Exchange is a tiny little shop on a side street that I nearly stumbled past until a friend pointed it out. The building looks like one of the first built in the city and a small square sign let's you know where you are. Although the store is small there's not a foot of wasted space. A shelf of NC/SC locals is the first to greet you as you enter. Past that is a small 5 or 6 tap growler station then the bank of coolers, 5 or 6 doors. The rest of Americas offerings are followed by Scandinavian, Belgian, German, English, and other imports in a small aisle.
As I said, there couldn't be better use of the space. The options are plentiful and the staff is quick to lend tips and thoughts, holding nothing back. The staff is helpful and fun to talk to. The prices are right in line with other places I stopped on my travels. The seasonal selection was stacked. I was very happy with my stop in, especially after hearing so much about them in the past, it lived up to expectations. Highly recommended.
