Formerly La Trappe and La Trappe Mandarina Bavaria Witte

The world’s first and only white Trappist ale that continues to ferment slightly after bottling. Brewed using only water, wheat, and hops. No herbs are added. Saphir hops give the ale its citrusy aroma. A real thirst-quencher on a hot summer’s day that also makes for a delicious drink at any other time of the year.

Pours a pale golden color with a medium sized, fine pored head.

Aromas are defined by ripe banana, cloves and rock sugar.

Mouthfeel on this is light, very carbonated with a stony mineralic quality to it, leading to a very refreshing beer.

Tastes of bread dough, honey and toffee covered malts among lighter dried grass and an uplifting effervescence. Offers a little more rustic bread rind then with unripe bananas and a spicy, sticky sweetness. Finishes quite sprizzy, mineralic with a banana, allspice spiciness and underlying herbs.

Very refreshing with enough character to convince on the tongue.

Transparent color between off yellow and white, abundant medium-fine grain foam with excellent hold. Sweet and elegant bouquet, citrus fruits, coriander, bread crust, honey, spices and herbaceous. On the palate there is a good malty base that supports the freshness of citrus fruits and the pungent spiciness. Herbaceous finish with acid hint. Delicate aftertaste of banana and vanilla. Slim body and high sparkling.

L- Mid-straw, very slight haze (most sediment left in bottle), pours with 3mm ultra-fine white head.
S- Distinctly witte with a spicey edge, coriander might be the most prominent and a touch of clove.
T- Quite hoppy and light for a Trappist beer. After a few swigs some more body begins to come through.
F- When I think of Trappist beers I'm used to punchy winter-warmers, this isn't like that, it's like a cross between a witte and a good German weissbrau.
O- I was surprised to see glucose syrup listed in the ingredients; according to their website that's added pre-bottling to achieve the secondary fermentation. Likely the lightest monastic beer I've had, part-compensation comes via the hefty spicy character. Still, might suit summer better than winter.

Poured into a Warsteiner pokal. Pours a light to medium golden amber with a fine, two finger white head with great retention and thick lacing. Aroma of wheat malt, clove, apple and lemon; classic witbier profile. Flavor follows with wheat malt, apple and pear, light lemon and clove. Thins out a bit into the finish, displaying the clove note more clearly. Medium bodied with light to medium creaminess. Looks and smells like a traditional witbier, but the flavor is a bit thin in the finish, although there is a lingering spicy wheat flavor. I'm not sure the description on the page is correct "no herbs are added", because there is very distinct clove in both the aroma and taste. Either that has changed recently or there is an unusually accurate flavor component to the hops. A good witbier that could use a bit more flavor body; the flavor that's here is nice.
