Very interesting. A real DUTCH trappist bockbeer. As far as I know, the only one.

A: Great dark brown/ruby color and a huge lightbrown foamy head.

S: Roasted malts, caramel and some hints of fruitiness.

T: Again roasted malts and caramel. Hints of red and dark fruits especially as the beer warms up. there's a light coffee taste as well and a light bitterness.

M: Medium carbonation, creamy mouthfeel, dry finish and a full body.

D: WOW, this is a great bokbeer. This is so much better than their dubbel. Will surely stock some of these.

A "Trappist bock" would be a good description. Handsome auburn brown color in the wide La Trappe chalice. Plenty of foam and a tangy, spritzy mouthfeel. Warm and malty, tastes even bigger than the aocohol content would indicate.

Moderately sweet but such a nice clean taste of cafamelized malt. A whiff of molasses. The dark roasted taste is just right with the sugary notes. The bitter edge of yeast rather than hops is what makes this distinctive. Totally drinkable. A rich yet tangy dark brew.

The Belgian yeastiness is just what the traditional German bock style needs. On tap at The Public House in La Jolla, Calif.

This poured with a deep rich brown and a sturdy light brown head made of bubbly foam.

The aroma was deeply chocolate, hints of caramel malt, grainy barley, a little char and a bit of toffee.

The taste is chocolatey as well with a smokiness akin to campfire ember. There bits of toffee, caramel, barley malt and a tobacco flavoring that really sets this apart. The tobacco leaf earthiness melds well with the smoky char to remind me of a lit cigar.

The feel is quite full, a little bubbly and prickly, but smooth on the finish.

I really enjoyed this block beer and put it up there with Ayinger Celebrator, though it goes in a different direction.

Is it a fruity, spicy and spritzy double bock beer? Or, is it a toasty and savory Belgian double ale? Its really hard to tell as the beer displays characteristics of both. It appears as if the Dutch monks are looking to the imagination of microbrewers while also using the styles that they have at their disposal.

Much like Dubbel Ale, the beer pours with a hazy bronze with tawny red slivers and a mask of brown; often taking on proportions of rust. What billows above is a light, fluffy and arid head of honeycomb structure and cream-stained color. Its longevity of froth and intricate lacing does much for Dubbel, but strays from Dopple.

While expecting Belgian influence, the common date, fig, and nutty aromas butt up against a clove, peppery spice and vinous wine tone to near perfection. However its complex character is exacerbated with a toasty, savory and molasses-like maltiness that is certainly a welcome surprise.

And that's how the taste kicks off- those bock-like savory sweetnesses greet the early palate with light molasses and steely caramel. Where a plethora of malt flavor teases the taste buds, its assocated sweetness is quick, echoing through the middle and late palate. That's when the whimsy of stone fruit, dried dark fruit, and pitted fruit balances with light clove, fresh-cracked peppercorn, modest hop bitterness and a playfully acidic rose wine character. Its malty-dry finish resonates with fruit and toasted savoriness.

Medium for Dubbel but light for Bock, again the schizophrenic beer carries away that malty weight with ease because of its high effervescence. The finish comes quick as the ale prickles lightly at the palate with its peppery character, alcohol warmth and complex acidity.

The fusion of styles is truly imaginative, classy and clever. The richer malt character complements the Belgian complexity in seamless fashion. It doesn't hurt that the brewing execution is also stellar.
