11.2oz bottle poured into a La Trappe Chalice. Date stamp of 15:03 K05C13. Poured carefully to keep most of the sediment in the bottle, but a tiny bit came along with the pour.
Appearance: Hazy red-amber (auburn) beer with a thin off-white head. Some small strands of delicate persistent lacing. Held up to the light you can see the carbonation coming up.
Smell: Yeast mostly - a few fruity esters. With a swirl some green banana.
Taste: Candi sugar, some banana, some fruit notes, spiciness in the middle, and the finish is leafy herbal and mildly bitter. Complex would be a good way to describe it.
Mouthfeel: Well carbonated - scrubs the palate clean. An almost airy mouthfeel. Only towards the end of the glass is there some very slight stickiness noted, but even then it is still a light mouthfeel.
Overall / Drinkability: Definitely better as it warms up, as when first poured and cold I wasn't that impressed. That being said, I always feel like I'm missing something when I put a Trappist Ale in a chalice, that I'm not concentrating all the complex flavors properly and I'm missing something. However, this could be the point: the monks just want me to drink it and not obsess over it. It's just beer that they made for charitable activities. Or maybe it is more of a visual wow that they're looking for: Look at that glass! Now look at what is in it! So here's my conclusion. Great packaging, but the inside contents are just good, not great. I wouldn't mind having a bigger glass, but I'm okay with the fact that I just have a 11.2oz as well. So overall, I think above average, but not hugely so for a Belgian Strong Pale Ale. There are better examples out there.

Enjoyed out of a brown 330 mL brown bottle with the La Trappe embossing on the neck of the bottle. The only information to mark when this might have been bottled is a production code for which I do not have the decoder, so I have no idea how old this beer is. Given the style, it likely doesn't matter as long as it's under a couple years old. Poured into a large brandy snifter.
Appearance - This has to be the darkest looking Belgian Strong Pale Ale I've ever seen. Rather than tones of yellow, gold, orange and amber, this one is coppery, cinnamon-stick brown with some faint orange highlights where the light manages to penetrate the liquid and massive head. Speaking of which, atop the mostly brown/burnt umber body is a towering and effervescent looking head, about three-to-four fingers thick. Mostly microbubbles save for a few medium sized bubbles that begin to burst, giving the impression of swiss cheese. Head is the color of creme and leaves visible, but faint lacing as it slowly begins to dissipate.
Smell - As I wrote when I first took a whiff of this, it's almost a banana bomb. The fruity phenols dominate the aroma, but they are one note, giving the strong impression of banana and banana bread. A little bit buttery as well, which is odd considering this is not the oak-aged version of the beer. Some sweeter notes of caramel malt come through as well, but in a supplementary role to the phenols.
Taste - Not quite as heavy on the banana-like phenols, but they are still quite dominant. Luckily now there are some other fruit elements as well--but of the dried variety: dates, figs and perhaps prunes. A little bit of bakery spice and toasted caramel come through as well along with some faint esters from the high alcohol.
Mouthfeel - Creamy and medium-bodied, with ample carbonation and an effervescent feel, almost like if champagne had more heft to it. Aftertaste is mostly sweet.
Overall, an alright beer. Not one I'm likely to rush out to buy again, but I might have it again depending on the other options I had available to me. I can see this one being appealing to those who like Dubbels or other Belgian Dark Ales, as it seems to skirt the line between styles a little bit to me. Not as much on the dark fruits, but the overall profile is definitely different from many of the top-notch BSPAs I've sampled.
