Don't recall exactly what I paid for this corked and caged 12.7oz bottle, but I don't recall it being particularly cheap. I pour into an oversized snifter at 45 degrees to review. This is batch 3 as stamped on the back of the bottle.

Cork was a little tough to get out and a modest spurt of the carbonation lets me know it is not flat. The large off white dense head reconfirms that notion. A mysterious cloudy brown color which you can almost see through when held to the light. Superb lacing and a nice layer of retention sticks around the inner rim of the snifter.

First whiff is quite pleasing to me. Seemingly complex with sweet malts, dark fruits and a medicinal oakiness to it. Fig, raisin and prune all evident with an almost grape soda like sweetness to it. There is also molasses, brown sugar, Belgian spice and hints of butterscotch. I tell just through my nose that this is going to be velvety smooth with some welcomed warming from the alcohol.

This beer is damn near an oak bomb, if an oak bomb exists. The woody character takes on a smoky character as the beer warms. Dark fruits, lightly roasted malts. There is that warming alcohol.

As predicted, velvety smooth, a silkiness only the best Belgians retain. Perfect carbonation to hold up this medium-full body. World class mouthfeel.

This is a very impressive Belgian Dark. I can put it right up with my top 3 favorites in the style. If you run across it, get it!

Thanks to Skuter for sharing this one at his tasting.

Batch 6.

Pours a murky orange-brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace slowly drip into the remaining beer on the drink down. Tiny chunks of sediment are seen floating around in the beer after the pour. Smell is of toasted malt, caramel, toffee, brown sugar, candied fruit, tawny port, and alcohol aromas. Taste is much the same with toffee, candied fruit, tawny port, and slight cardboard flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of wood bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a low level of carbonation with an almost flat mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer with fantastic smells and tasty but slightly oxidized flavors.

Batch 12 - 91% Bourbon Barrels - 9% Cognac Barrels

A - Murky maple syrup color with floating yeasties. Very little tan head.

S - Sweet with dark fruits, figs & raisins, oak, brown sugar, spicy alcohol, light cognac notes.

T - Sweet malt with ripe dark fruits, caramel, brown sugar, spicy alcohol. Cognac is more noticeable than aroma with light bourbon notes. Very sweet and boozy but it plays well together.

M - Full body with low carbonation. Slightly sticky and syrupy.

D - A bit boozy but I like it. The cognac adds a nice touch.

375ml bottle bought from Lighthouse Wines, Jordanstown... according to the bottle this is batch 15 which was aged in Oloroso sherry barrels

Poured a mahogany red colour with lots of yeasty haziness. Creamy head poured loose and frothy and faded almost instantly to wispy covering... no real lacing to speak about...

Lots going on in the aroma... lots of rich oaky boozy notes mixed with sweet nuttiness - hints of almond and pistachio, toffee and treacle, very woody, musty, some overripe (rotten ?) fruits - apples and bananas, grainy malts, toasted (burnt) raisin bread, light smokiness, some chocolate, butterscotch...

Taste - Strong warming boozy soaked ripe fruits mixed with lots of spicy Belgian yeastiness, bready, very woody, musty, toasted nuts, vanilla, very light toffee sweetness, sweet treacle, some vegetal traces, anise - hint of cough medicine, burnt butter...

M&D - Fairly smooth and creamy... medium bodied... A little boozy to be very drinkable - this one is a real sipper

Overall - An excellent example of an oak aged brew... highly recommended although not sure if its worth the £10 or so i paid for it...

appearance murky Brown with red hues when held towards the light.

Smell-big candied fruit alcohol laced FIGS
also cherry

taste-candy covered fruit,a litte bit of a whisky note. Hardly any alchohol taste. this was my first time with this batch...cola and whiskey come through- barley wine characteristic. I much prefer the earlier batch with the exception of the white wine batch

mouth feels slightly carbonated smooth.

overall batch 8 is a delicious all around beer not as sweet as other batches
Great beer
