330ml bottle, served slightly chilled in a Peeterman Artois goblet

Pours with a rich deep mahogany body, slightly cloudy. Rich copper tones when held up to the light. Bubbly tan head forms about an inch thick then settles to a reasonable tight whisp of head. Some small tan bubbles of lacing

Smell, sugary molasses and burnt sugars, rich walnuts and roasted chestnuts. Some fragrant and spicy dried fruit, raisins and rum soaked plums. Little bit of a soapy character on the nose too (this definitely wasn't from the glass), some spicy fresh malt on the finish

Taste, crisp and crunchy bready malt. Bread and butter pudding, fresh hot cross buns, bittering hops and some slightly chalky sweetness on the finish. Slighly sour syrupy malt extract and a hint of dextrin, a few subtle tannins floating around in there too. Thick and spicy dried fruit and mixed spice, a few metallic notes also

A very drinkable dubbel from the Dutch trappists. This is a much more rounded and balanced beer than their Quad, very drinkable and could even be considered somewhat of a sessionable belgian dark.

A:
Pours a cloudy golden-amber-brown with a tiny wisp of bubbly head that almost immediately settles to a messy ring around the glass. Terrible retention; no lacing.

S:
Musky and fruity. Cherries, spicy phenols, leather, wood, licorice.

T:
Dark and sweet. A rich, vaguely winey flavor up front, yields to dark fruit, a little alcohol sourness, wood, and a mysteriously quick, dry finish.

M:
Thin and bubbly. Light-medium bodied with a dry, aromatic finish.

O:
Meh dubbel.
I felt like this one was just a little less 'big' than I would have liked. Terrible looking, it is saved by a pretty pleasant nose that is very spicy and woodsy. Taste-wise it is obviously a European dubbel and I feel like it has a very nice yeasty character; but it is pretty light and definitely nothing earth-shattering.
Won't have again; have a Westmalle or some Rochefort instead ; )

330ml bottle. La Trappe Chalice glass. Dark brown color, cloudy appearance. Light beige foam & creamy crown shows fairly good retention. Dark fruit, slight phenolic, sweet & caramel malt, spiced aromas & lemon hints. Gentle tart & fruity flavors at first followed by toasted maltiness & chocolate hues. Medium body. Moderate carbonation. Oily texture. Spicy & peppery palate. Tartiness is enhaced by carbonation but, finally, toasted malts overwhelm it. Very low hoppiness. Kind alcohol heat & sweet fruits into the finish. Delicious, complex, well balanced & nice spot of the Style.
