330ml bottle. Tasting chalice glass. Amber color, chill haze appearance. Off-white froth creates a close crown & shows fairly good retention. Spiced – vanilla & herbs-, pale malt, spicy, delicate citric, sugar & coriander aromas. Smooth sweet maltiness is blown up by cumin notes & warm alcohol. Medium body. Moderate carbonation. Texture is silky & ABV is felt. Hints of ripe fruit, light woody notes & sugary maltiness drive into a long sweet/fruity finish & aftertaste touched by funny peppery sensation.

750ml corked and caged poured into a chalice glass. Cheers to my buddy Woody for the beer. It pours a medium brown gold color with a quickly dissipating head. Smells of bread dough and honey. The taste is bready with a quick whack of cinnamon. Does cinnamon come in whacks? There is also a slight earthy flavor, with a really nice aftertaste that just makes you want to have another sip. It is a straightforward tripel, not like the Westmalle, but very refreshing. The mouthfeel is spot on, tingly and buttery. Overall, I like this beer quite a bit. It is very good in a very simple way. I've been called worse, so I imagine the monks would be OK with that description.

Poured from a 750 mL bottle into a Duvel tulip. Moderate hand. Label reveals K1 OF 13.

A: Hazy, honey-colored body with 3 fingers of off-white head. Fair retention. Light lacing. Becomes fairly flat appearing by the bottom of the glass.

S: Relatively earthy Belgian yeast with light spice. Namely coriander, clove. Apple and pear with more subdued fruit notes than your average tripel. Light grass, straw. Notable noble hop presence. Honey, candi sugar. Slight booze.

T: Earthy, yeast, lightly sweet up front. Transitions to a surprisingly assertive European hop bitterness and semi-dry finish. Some sugar, peach lingers on the aftertaste with a certain booziness. Touch of licorice.

M: Moderate carbonation with moderate to fullish body. Less effervescent than the typical tripel and a bit more heft.

O: Somewhat unique in the world of Belgian tripels. Not quite up to par with the best in class IMO, but brings its own character to the party. A bit heavier, hoppier and earthier take on the style.

Had on tap at Craft Beer Market in Calgary. Served in an authentic La Trappe goblet, very nice. A rather unique color, a clear brownish yellow that somehow manages to fall right between my conceptualizations of "light" and "dark", almost a translucent butterscotch hue. Aroma was sweet, fruity, floral, and moderately spicy, some of those classic Belgian esters and phenols are certainly present but are less aggressive than with many other tripels. I get some caramel, yogurt, baked pear, sweet citrus fruit, peach, plum, banana, and clove elements, on the nose and the palate. The malts are pound cake sweet and the hops (or yeast?) yield some floral chamomile and tobacco notes. Semi-aggressive carbonation and the alcohol does peak through near the end of the experience. More smooth, more mellow, and less boozy than other tripels I've tried and I appreciate the subtlety and near-creamy mouthfeel, although thankfully you won't forgot you're drinking a Belgian style ale.

750mL bottle, poured 2/5 into an oversized wine glass

A: Slightly opaque gold, clean white but small head that dissipated quickly, very fine bubbles.

S: Estery yeasts and apples - nice and strong when I opened the bottle. Maybe a hint of honey as well.

T: Very light honey sweetness followed by tart apples and bananas, which I'm assuming is the astringency others mentioned. Maybe the slightest hint of warm spicy alcohol on the finish, no sign of bitterness. Sour taste lingers.

M: Light carb, medium full mouthfeel that's quickly dissipated by a dry finish.

O: Dangerously easy-drinking. Love the mouthfeel and smell, but the sourness lingers too long for my taste. Solid tripel and excellent value.

From the corked, caged big bottle marked 09;58-K1ED13. My 1,400th review for Beer Advocate was sampled on October 16, 2013.

The first thing that puzzles me is the cork itself. It almost felt like a mix of plastic and corked wood. But once I shook off that thought I got a hazy looking pale yellow with a fizzy white head that simmered down to a ring.

The aroma was full of Abbey style toasted biscuit malts, coriander, white pepper, pear or white grapes, and a mild hop note.

The body was medium and smooth.

The taste came across as a little more bitter than I am used to for the style notwithstanding the intense flavors of toasted malts, vague spices, and a lingering but clean astringency at the tail end. This had a kind of sharpness to it that I don't see often in Tripels.

La Trappe Tripel pours a dark golden color with a nice large lacing head. There is a sweet and dry fruity aroma with strong banana notes. The taste is much the same, nice mellow sweetness, with a dry finish, good dry fruits present. Good solid body, good flavors, and not overpowering, and drinkable. Overall a very nice well built drinkable tripel.

Slightly hazy copper golden color with an abundant thick head with good retention and apparent carbonation.
Nice aroma of grapes, molasses, pine, orange marmalade, bready malt, bananas, bubble gum and condiments. Its smell becomes amazing when it warms up.
Flavor of bananas, molasses, booze, oxidized oranges, strawberries, grape juice, figs and coriander. Not so condimented.
Full body with low carbonation, even slightly effervescent. Alcohol of 8% abv is harmonic with the overall beer.
I prefer their quad, but this is still very complex and incredibly fruity, a beer that grows overtime. Give some time to peel all its flavor layers. My grade would be fairly different otherwise.

Appearance: A hazy golden yellow with a huge 2.5 finger head that stuck around for some time. No lacing to speak of. Massive carbonation streaming up from the bottom of a freshly washed jar, so this thing must be packed with bubbles.

Smell: Smells a lot like a hefeweizen- crisp, light, and banana-like.

Taste: Hmm, where do I start here. There is a lot going on. The taste I can best describe this as something like hefeweizen and white-wine mixed together: there are definitely the banana notes typical of a hefeweizen (probably from the yeast), but as you swallow, thus slightly fruity flavor shows up on the tongue. The fruity flavor is somewhat similar to sweet white wines, but doesn't taste like grapes. Not sure how to describe the flavor except as non-citrus light-fruits.

Mouthfeel: This one is smooth and creamy due to the small bubbles and heavy carbonation. I love seeing the bubbles stream up from the glass and collect on the sides since they are so small and pack so tightly into the head.

Overall: A great beer. Very complex, and deceptively heavy, I find. Others find tripel's deceptively light, but I found that the smooth mouthfeel really made this one feel heavier on the tongue than you would assume from the color. The head also stuck around a lot longer than I'd expect from something with 8% ABV. Overall, a great beer, and one I would get again. Look forward to trying more tripels.

A: Pours a yellow straw colour, clouded with sediment. Almost cider like. Noisy. Big white head disappears quickly.

S: Coriander, slightly pissy and cider-like. Kind of spicy.

T: Yummy. Lots of lacquer/nail varnish and a bit of sherbet. It's tart, or acidic, and somewhat citrusy. Bit of white bread. Getting a lot of lacquer/nail varnish in the aftertaste. The coriander in the nose is not as strong in the mouth. Almost peach-like towards the end.

M: Medium bodied. Lively but nothing special.

O: Nice but I prefer the quadruple.

A-slightly hazy orangeish, golden color with three fingers worth of white head that sticks to the glass

S-smell is pretty sweet with pale bready malt, sweet fruit, spices, and a bit yeasty

T- taste matches the smell, with a bready backbone and a a mix of fruity sweetness and spices, with a touch of bitterness. Might not be as crisp as other Tripel's but still very good.

M-medium body, medium carbonation, pretty smooth with well hidden alcohol

Overall this might not match up to other Trappist Tripel's, but it is still quite nice tasting.

750 ml bottle from LCBO for $7.10 CDN poured into an oversized wine glass.

Appearance - Copper golden color indicative of the richness within with faint shades of brown. only 1 finger of head that dissipated quite quickly and virtually no lacing as expected of the 8.0% ABV brew.

Smell - Impressive. There's bready malts, yeast, light floral aspects as well as many fruits namely apples and pears and grapes, but a host of others leaning towards the citrus side are also detectable.

Taste - Pretty similar to the smell, booze is apparent and noticeable but not overwhelming. Picked up a lot of pear taste on the finish and in the aftertaste, and grapes are apparent throughout. Pretty complex.

Mouthfeel - This was the letdown to be honest. A little thinner than expected, given the wondrous array of flavors and smells. It was rich but lacking the creaminess of some of the other tripels I've had. Nonetheless well above average in comparison with an ordinary beer.

Overall - Very delicious and quite complex. Not quite as good as some of the other tripels, but still a favorite that I may purchase when it's available.

750ml Bottle from the Ottawa LCBO for $7

Appearance - Slightly hazy amber colour with a smaller size fizzy/frothy white coloured head. There is a high amount of carbonation showing and there is some decent lacing. The head lasted for around 5 minutes.

Smell - Breads/grains, clove/coriander, honey, apples

Taste & Mouth - There is a low amount of carbonation and I can taste malts, breads/grains mixed with some clove/coriander and banana. There is also some apples juice and a bit of a honey sweetness. It ends with a malty honey sweet aftertaste.

Overall - Not as good as I was expecting but still pretty decent. Just doesn't have as many floral and fruity notes as some other triples have. Kind of like a triple and a duble mixed in some ways.

A -Copper gold, thick, slow dissipating white head

S - Citrus and light roasted malts

T - Citrus, fruity esters, hints of roasted nuts, coriander, with a dry hoppy finish

M - medium bodied with moderate carbonation, dry finish

O - Overall one of my favourite tripels. I love the balance between the malty roasted nut flavours and the fruity flavours.

Poured from 750 ml bottle into a snifter.

A: pours a hazy gold with an almost two inch head that dies down quickly leaving some lacing.

S: fruit and yeast are the predominant smells that come through on the nose of this triple.

T: the yeast is still there in the taste, but there is a maltiness and the alcohol does come through. Fruit is there but it is in the background with spices like clove and cardamon.

M: medium carbonation and there is a bit of slick to it. It has an overall medium body.

O: this is a good triple that was easy to drink. The most disappointing part of this beer was the artificial cork that topped the bottle. I fought to get it out, and this had me starting out a little miffed. I am generally a fan of tripels, and I quite enjoy most Trappist offerings, but I am on the fence with this one... Maybe the quad will change my mind.

An iconic Tripel that deserves its accolades!

Pours a hazy but bright golden honey coloured amber. The surprisingly white head has excellent staying power at the edges of the glass. Aroma of Belgian yeast with an underlying caramelized malt and candied fruit backbone. This carries into a nicely balanced taste that starts sweet but has decent depth in the body and ends with a surprisingly smoky bitterness. The oily mouthfeel is quite appropriate both for the style and its 8% ABV.

Should have been rated years ago, but impressed by this beer's consistency as well as its quality.

Smell: herbal with subtle hops and sweet citrus

Taste: spices cardamom, floral notes, hints of clementines, sweet champagne, and subtle scotch-like smokiness

This beer, as Trappist style dictates, is designed by those under and for God; it's going to be good. This beer, although not life changing, is one of the better tripels out there. With its pseudo complexities, this beer is an interesting stand-alone drinker. However, if you feel like pairing it with something, this beer goes great with a smoked salmon pear glaze on a rice pilaf with mild spice; try it with Chinese food too

Poured a light golden color with a 1 finger head in a snifter.

Aroma: light cloves and banana which fades with warming.

The mouth feel is very carbonated- perhaps too much for a tripel.

Taste: light cloves and spice.

Overall: a solid tripel. This beer is worth cellaring. I cellared the quad which after 9 months was quite complex.

Poured from bottle into a chalice glass

Appearance- Pours a slightly hazed golden orange color with a two finger off white head present upon pouring. Rather quickly the head fades leaving a moderate level of lace on the sides of the glass.

Smell- The aroma is heaviest of a citrus and yeasty smell with lots of banana and spice mixed within. Other aromas of other lighter fruits, like apricot and peach are present as well with all the smells being complemented by a light alcohol aroma.

Taste – The taste follows the nose fairly well with a front showing of citrus and some lightly toasted malt. The yeast quickly come to the tongue and bring with them flavors of banana and a bit of clove. As the flavor advances fruiter a bit of a warming alcohol taste begins developing with some flavors of apricot and a little bit of earthy hop coming at the end of the taste. With the alcohol now slightly stronger at the end of the taste, a fruited and yeasty, warming taste is left to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the medium side for an 8 % abv triple with a carbonation level that is average to slightly above average for the style. The combination of the two, when mixed with the lighter fruit flavors, give a crispness to the brew, making it quite easy drinking.

Overall- A nice triple that has a great easy drinking character with a good blend of malt, light fruits and yeast. Rather enjoyable.

(4.0) A: Cloudy rich copper colour with a finger of velvety head. Adequate retention and waves of lacing cling to the glass.

(4.0) S: Green apple, banana, cloves, spices, faint floral qualities, and dried figs and dates. A good mix of strong aromas that work together well.

(4.0) T: Ripe banana, pineapple, cloves, yeast, slight grain taste, and floral qualities. Smooth with a honey-like finish. Not overly sweet with a solid dryness.

(4.0) M: Medium bodied with a moderate carbonation. Appropriately slick with a bit of gritty texture.

(4.0) D: A good and solid all-around tripel and one I would enjoy again.

As always, I review live, not from notes, puzzling out the libation brewed in houses of salvation. As always, I review to style (ala BJCP), modified by personal taste (contra BJCP), not solely to personal taste, which would be unfair to many great examples of styles that I don't personally favour.

First time I've had this beer. Ratings subject to revision upon consumption of additional bottles.

Apologies for my short review this time. Christ is risen! It's Easter/Catholic Pascha (Orthodox Pascha isn't until May 5 due to the Revised Julian Calendar differences from the Gregorian - lots of discounts!), so I'll be heading out to the House of Worship in an hour. Or less. I'll try to keep it brief. And likely fail.

Presentation: 750mL corked and caged bottle, $9.99, served at 40ºF and warming as I write, poured in to a Chimay goblet/chalice.

A: Slightly hazy, still mostly transparent, apple-juice or hard-cider colour, with one finger of soapy white head which recedes relatively quickly to a scum upon the face of the beer and a ring around its edges. Minor rings of lacing. Mildly active carbonation.

S: Cracked black pepper, very mild citrus fruits, bready yeast, "dry bubblegum" (bubblegum aromas, surprisingly lacking much sweetness), applejack, a little Belgian funk, and an extremely elusive (possibly imagined) whiff of Belgian spiciness.

T: Peppery and fruity, probably from the inimitable Belgian yeast, slightly dry, quite bready, bordering on the biscuit-like. There's a bit of undefined alcohol in there, along with an undefined hop bitterness which holds the malts and sweetness in check without being obvious. A little bit of weird skunkiness, probably part of the Belgian funk, with an almost-imperceptible twang of DMS on some sips - it may just be my imagination, but it gets a 4.5 instead of 4.9 or 5.0 for this bottle.

M: Medium of body, light and spritzy of carbonation,

D: High.

O: An extraordinarily well-balanced Tripel, not exceedingly complex but complex enough for the job. Easy drinking, but with layers of flavour that exist if one wishes to drink it more slowly with the goal of puzzling them out. Better than St Bernardus Tripel, not quite as good as Chimay or Westmalle Tripel, but it's a beast of it's own sort - less fruity, less estery. Better in some ways, not in others, it's hard to make a direct comparison: try it. It's certainly worth it.

330ml bottle purchased from Steve's Cool Booze in Kensington.

Pours a rather deeper hue than I expected: an amber-golden colour, that looks rather dense and syrupy. Head fizzes up quite a lot on the first pouring, but then settles back to an inauspicious film across the top. Body looks fluid, but also retaining some of the thickness initially perceived. Overall, it looks like a decent beer, but a pretty average tripel.

Nose is dusty and slightly savoury. Some green sprouting wheat characters, and a hint of dusky spice, like pepper mixed with earth. There's a noticeable booziness as well, and a suggestion of oxidation. I note the best before date is 05-2013: so it's still within that range, but towards the back end. Overall, I'm not particularly impressed.

Taste is dank and limp, with a metallic character rising on the mid palate, and a old sherry oxidised bitterness on the finish. Some spice and booze are noticeable, especially when the beer is allowed to evaporate on the tongue, but otherwise it feels flat, and rather uninteresting.

Feel is overly fizzy, despite the perception that it has burnt itself out quickly. It is light, however, belying the appearance of thickness. Some boozy heat is also present.

Overall, I'm not a big fan. This has really darkened, dampened and flattened with time, and I'm far from being enthusiastic. Indeed, this tastes a little like a mediocre homebrewer attempting a strong Belgian golden without much success. Very average indeed.
