A - Poured out a bubbly, clear, golden orange color with a nice head of tan, bubble foam.

S - It smelled like plastic. There were slight caramel notes and hints of citrus.

T - It tasted a like a weak IPA. It had some nice caramel flavor with a faint grassy bitterness.

M - It was crisp and sharp with a somewhat dry finish. A light to medium bodied ale.

D - It tasted okay. The aroma left a lot to be desired. (413 characters)

Had this on tap at Bele Chere today, saw it for the first time and figured I would give it a shot. Poured a nice amber with a smallish off white head that faded rather quickly, left behind a small amount of lace, but nothing to write home about. Smell was lighter then I would have liked. Hoppy for sure, with citrus notes and a bitter aroma, just not that overly strong. Needed to be more pronounced. The taste was a tad bit watered down for me. I would have liked to see more punch. It was basically a hoppy pale ale, not really much more. Some nice notes of pine and some caramel in the finish, but just too light. Decent feel, but again nothing really grand. This was a bit of a forgettable IPA for me. Just seemed to be a bit too light for my tastes. It was quite drinkable and is better then a macro anyday, however just needs a bit more work to be good. (860 characters)

One of my NC beer pick ups. review based on notes, tasted in early July:

Pours honey colored with 3 fingers of fluffy pearl colored head. Good head retention & lacing

S: Perfumy hops & lemons

T: Lemons, grapefruit & grassy hops, slight pear & apricot fruittyness up front. Grapefruit & dryness dominate as this warms, along with pear fruittyness. Finishes crisp with leafy hops, & some honey malt

MF: Medium bodied, semi-chewy, okay balance

Drinks alright, just a bit one dimensional; too much grapefruit to really make me happy (534 characters)

Quite a refreshing IPA, but one with some nice hop qualities as well. I had this one super fresh, which I think is key for an ipa. Pours golden with some light orange highlights with an ok head and some decent lacing. The smell is fruity cherry and some lightly citrusy hops. I get the yeast esters in the smell more than the hops. The flavor is delicious bitter citrusy hops witth more of those yummy fruity esters. Very refreshing and somewhat light bodied but enough to hold up the hops. An excellent summertime ipa. (519 characters)

Strong, hoppy aroma has an overtone of somewhat sweet grapefruit and a touch of orange. It pours an attractive amber with a nice white head that leaves some decent lacing. Flavor has a strong grapefruit overtone that is more sour than sweet. Core of the flavor is hoppy with some malt and a floral hint. Though the sour and bitter flavors are strong and the sweetness is subtle, they complement each other nicely. Grapefruit finish has hoppy, malty and floral notes. Firm texture has quite a bit of fizz and leaves a fairly persistent tingle on the tongue and lips. And you gotta see the kewl art on the bottle! (611 characters)

Served from tap at the brewpub into an Asheville Brewing Company shaker. Poured hazy yellow orange with a one finger white head that subsided to a minimal amount slowly. There was no lacing evident throughout. The aroma was comprised of malt and pine hops. The flavor was of malt and pine hops that showed up in a nice crisp followthrough. It had a medium feel on tha palate with mild carbonation. Overall this was not a bad IPA. It was very simple in nature which could have been its downfall though. It just needed more complexity to it to be memorable. But overall this a nice refreshing IPA. (595 characters)

A: This poured clear light gold with thin and bubbly white head.
S: It smelled like bitter resin and grapefruit zest, with some sour lager yeast and a bit of sweet honey.
T: It tasted like stale bready yeast and very bitter resin, with a little copper and citrus and honey. It had a very bitter and somewhat clean aftertaste.
M: It was watery with some carbonation. Decent body.
D: This was not a very good IPA...maybe my can was old? It was very bitter but not flavorful otherwise, so it wasn't that easy to drink. I don't see any redeeming quality to this beer, honestly. Not recommended. (590 characters)

The beer arrived on the table a slightly hazy pale golden amber with a white frothy head which laced the glass.

The aroma was fruity with a citrusy and floral hop presence and a light caramel impression. The citrusy aromatic was grapefruit.

The flavor was fruity with a very nice citrusy bittering and a slightly earthy presence. The caramel maltiness worked well to balance the flavor and round out the beer.

The finish was dry with a lasting citrusy bittering into the aftertaste. The body was medium and well done. A very nice beer!

Pint at Asheville Pizza and Brewing on Merrimon in Asheville. I remember in the past that the beers from here would be substandard. This does not seem to be the case anymore. Good Times! (734 characters)

Bought a 12 FL OZ can of this from the Thirsty Monk in Asheville, NC for $3 (special) and enjoying it in Salt Lake City, UT before bar hopping. Poured from the awesome black background w/ tie die & a goddess in the middle into a 12oz Clear cup. No freshness date to be found.

Aroma- Starts with medium hops and some citrus. Very light overall and really have to search for even these only two attributes.

Appearance- Pours a 4 finger head that lasts for a crazy amount of time (great retention). Has a copper colored body that is easy going and clear. Leaves thick lacing behind.

Flavor- Strong fruits, especially grapefruit, hit the mouth firstly and then sweet malts come into the picture. Finishes with a light bitterness level.

Mouthfeel- Light-Medium Bodied, Medium-High Carbonation, Smooth, and has an average citrus/fruity hop finish.

Overall Impression- Above average for an IPA but not my favorite from Asheville. Its tough to compare breweries in a town that has so many awesome ones! I would recommend trying if you have a chance but wouldn't shout this one from a rooftop or anything. (1,104 characters)

Pours gold with very little head. Nothing to retain. Faint, thin lacing.

Weak nose. Slightly more pine than citrus, but not much going on.

Slightly sweet on the hit with hints of apricot. Grapfruit kicks in at the finish with a nice hoppy bite. The hops are decently balanced against the malt, but the beer could be a bit thicker.

Very easy to drink if hops don't bother you. (378 characters)

A - pours a hazy copper color with a bit of soapy foam

S - slight hint of citrus hops, not much else

T - lemon & orange citrus with a slight malt backbone, finishing with a nice citrus hop bite

M - good carbonation, smooth mouthfeel

D - good flavor, average IPA that is easy to drink but not necessarily one to come back to again and again (384 characters)

Orange amber pour with a dense, lasting white head that laces beautifully.

Aroma is full of citrus, fruit, caramel, crusty bread, and a touch of pine.

Flavor is brimming with citrussy hop notes of grapefruit, tangerine, and lemon peel balanced by clean caramel malt flavors. Very juicey and bold. Reminds me a bit of Avery IPA, one of my favorites.

Body a bit above medium with a slick, juicey mouthfeel. A delicious IPA! (431 characters)

Comes a copper color with a very nice 2 finger lasting creamy head.
Smell is of citrus fruits. Grapefruit, orange, lemon, lime.
Taste: This beer is a hop bomb. Not much balance here as the hops dominate in the best of ways. Again the citrus flavors are dominate, with a nice bready finish. I had the beer yesterday and I can still taste the hops.
Feels very nice in the mouth. The hops attack your palate.
I could drink these over and over.
A very nice beer from Asheville Brewing. This place is worth a visit for this beer alone. (535 characters)

On tap in a shaker pint at the brewpub. The presence of wheat in Shiva is evident right away, lending a haziness to the gold body. Modest bright white head that leaves a bit of sticky lacing at the top of the glass.

Nose is a pleasant, somewhat mild blend of baking bread, citrus and floral hops. Nice level of bitterness, though, and it seems to be enhanced by the bite of the wheat. Some juicy citrus midswallow, but in the end it's a long finish of toasty grains and wheat. Shiva could perhaps could just as easily be classified as a hoppy American wheat. Regardless, it's tasty and worth a try. (600 characters)

A: A light gold with a chill haze to it. Thin white head.

S: A big citrus hop aroma with some toasted malt and a slight herbal hop aroma in the background.

T: The toasted malt really provides a nice base for the beer. The citrus fruit flavors and citrus hop blend really well together. A little citrus peel bitterness in the finish.

M: Light and drinkable with less than average carbonation levels. Slight bitterness in the finish.

O: This is a very drinkable and refreshing IPA. Tailored more to the citrus side but with a nice toasted malt to add depth. (559 characters)

This IPA was a pale golden colour, a little murky with a light carbonation and tiny crown.
Glass cling and ring with a nice island lace.

Aroma was primarily a light citrus and yeast.

The taste was exellent, well balanced to the hops, unusual to find an IPA this well balanced.
Minor after taste.

The mouthfeel is that of a medium body with energy, the carbonation at work.

I could consume this beveridge on a daily basis if it was available to me....exellent. (463 characters)

1-liter swingtop courtesy of AKSmokedPorter.

The pour is gorgeous. Somewhat hazy golden-(just-a-hint-of)-amber in color with an uber-thick and creamy white head that not only hung around forever, but damn near completely covered the entire glass with thick lace. Aromas are riddled with grapefruit...a lovely inidicator of things to come. Flavor is strongly dominated by citrusy and a dash of earthy-grassy hop bitterness. There's only token sweetness from the miniscule malt support here, but for a hophead like me, that's just fine. Finishes with a long-lasting, burp-inducing, gritty bitterness (not sweet...more of the grassy hoppy flavor) that reminds you of what's going on. Drinkable? The 1-liter was gone in about 90 mintues. Not a palate-shattering beer but certainly a fix for the hophead. I'd love to try this again.

Cheers to AKSP for providing me with a chance to try this bad boy. (900 characters)

I was really suprised at this beer. What a hoppy brew!! The growler was filled yesterday and today there was still a good sized head. The color is a nice amber. The smell is citrusy. The taste is outstanding. For an IPA, this one is one of the best I have had. The mouthfeel is very smooth with a nice lasting hop bitterness. I could drink these all night. This beer may be NC's best kept secret. (396 characters)

Slightly cloudy dark yellow. Citrus lemon and floral aroma. Hop profile is not my favorite but is lemon citrus up front with a bit of green apple and the finish is a stinging pine that is a tad off. Need less bittering agents here and some more malt to cut it a bit or even a little bit more sweetness. As it is it is a tad sweet with a tinge of caramel malt mid palate but this needs to be amped up a bit. (406 characters)

Cloudy yellow body with a hint of orange. Small white nicely dense foam head, grabbed the glass well leaving some spotty lacing on the way down.

The smell seemed light to me, which goes against many of the other reviews here. My sample seemed to be predominately grass and straw with maybe only a little bit of citrus.

Citrus and floral hops dominate the flavor and leave a nice strong bitter finish that really lingers on. The taste was good but seemed to lack malt to balance it out.

Medium bodied with a good bit of carbonation. Overall I thought it was really refreshing but at the same time fairly filling. Good drinkability though. I'd be glad to sip this one again some summer afternoon. (703 characters)

In my opinion a very unique IPA. A very pungent citrusy smell mixed in with grapefruit aromas. On the first sip you taste the hops right away tingling the tip of your tongue and giving way to that very nice tongue puckering citrus mixing in with the grapefruit tongue puckering bitterness all really well. Somewhere in between all that you get the cake like malt.

At first in comparison to a lot of the similar tasting high rated IPA's I had my thoughts about this beer but then I opened up to it a lot more since I have a 12 pack from the brewery and can really say its like Ashville's Dogfish Head 60 minute IPA. Easily rivaling that beer in my opinion. I was able to acquire this beer from family that vacationed there. Hopefully some more beer from Asheville including this brewery comes to NJ soon.. (805 characters)

On draft at the Merimon location.

Poured a very cloudy deep amber. Aroma is a mild citrus hops with hints of sweetness and grassiness. Taste is predominantly hoppy with slightly more bitterness than I prefer. Slightly out of balance, IMO. Overall a good IPA, not the best but very respectable. They said it's their best selling beer, which I can certainly believe. (367 characters)

Pours a golden orange hue, with moderate carbonation, tight frothy head. Had a beautiful floral, citrus hop smell. Taste was slightly bittering, but nothing to take points off for, I just prefer more bite, than bitter. Good citrus flavor, with some earthy/grassy notes. Good mouthfeel also, body balanced out nicely with carbonation. Refreshingly awakening. I enjoyed this with a good spice flavor on my pizza. Nice combo. This is another repeat drinker for me. (461 characters)
