I don't know what one would say about the atmosphere of a liquor store. It's safe and in a good neighborhood (Dupont) but yeah...I'm going to give it a 1 because I think that will bring the rating I give it down to size (the selection part is going to skew it).

The service is okay. The people that work there are pretty nice but they are a tad all up in your face and follow you around a lot which is super awkward (they do have a huge store I guess, but still).

This place has the best beer selection in DC, maybe followed closely by De Vinos in North Dupont/South Adams Morgan. Period.

The problem is they think they can charge out the a$$. It's actually kind of infuriating. Skip this place unless money is no object for you--and then still skip it because it's contributing to their notion that they CAN charge this much and get away with it. They are a good 20-30% more expensive than the other stores in the area. It's not just beer either. I was comparing prices for a particular bourbon recently and it was $60 here and $40 at another place right down the road. I'm always tempted to go here because I live sooo close by but recently I've been annoyed enough with the prices to walk further to Connecticut Ave. Wine & Liquors.

NOTE: I REALLY wanted the average to go lower because the pricing is THAT ridiculous, but I can't say without being disingenuous that they don't have a really good selection of quality beers. (1,432 characters)

This shop has things you'd be unlikely to find on the shelf anywhere else but it comes at a steep cost.

$130 bottles of Black Tuesday, Dark Lord or Vanilla Rye. $30 bottles of warm Pliney. (190 characters)

Way expensive unless of course you think $130 for a bottle of hanapuah stout is ok.

Everything is old - which is fine for the stouts but not for many other styles. (165 characters)

I give these guys a high rating. Here's why:
Service is A1. The store has about five guys working at given so you never have to wait to get assistance and at least two of them are extremely knowledgable about beers and when and if they will be getting them in. They are willing to go the extra mile to assist you and they do waiting lists for the more rare beers. They will special order stuff for you (they just special ordered a hard to get brandy for me).
Selection is great. They have 6 different years of dark lord and BCBS. They have Russian River beers, Darkness, Black Note, and more. So quality and selection are unbeatable.
The vibe is ok, but let's be honest...its a high end liquor store in DC. The fact that it isn't completely pretentious and douchey is actually pretty amazing.
So in all the categories of the review it scores really high and that is why I give it such a high score. They isn't a "value" rating category which there should be, so they don't get marked down for that by me.
That said the prices for the rare beers are truly laughable. Charging $30 for Pliny the Elder is both excessive and stupid. It makes the beer a shelf turd and it losses its freshness. Who wants a 6 month old DIPA? $100 for darkness is insane...but there are plenty of rich dc lawyers that have the money (they used to carry $21k a bottle Louis XIII Reserve and they told me they sold the entire case!) and if I was one of them I might consider paying these prices if I really wanted to try it.
Sorry for the long review but I thought the ratings were excessively harsh given how helpful they are and I wanted to balance it out with what I think is a more objective review. (1,680 characters)

I tried to give an honest review in a way. I really don't care for the vibe here given that they are clearly selling at a slightly higher than avg pricepoint for beer that normally makes it through DC and a through the roof stuff that they somehow bring in through somewhat salacious means. We all know that FFF, Westy, Russian River, etc are not distributed to DC but they have them and more! If you are willing to pay the price. If you have no desire to pay for flight, hotel and potential hassle of Darklord Day then the 100$ bottle is actually a good deal all things considered. That said, it isn't kept in the fridges, exposed to outdoor light and the store is bit warm, even in winter. So you may not get the full experience.

I should add that I cannot condone these kinds of sales outside of normal distribution rules. I believe that part of the whole beer experience is actually participating in the madness of releases like Darklord Day, even if I don't really care to participate in hyped releases anymore. (1,018 characters)

Went here while in DC on a business trip. Bottle selection was pretty good, they had some Russian River bottles and even a couple bottle of Westvleteren Blonde, but I laughed out loud once I saw their prices. They were selling 12 oz. bottles of BCBS for $20 and dogfish head Worldwide Stout for $20 also! Single bottles of Devil Dancer were as much as the 4 packs back homes. They had a few of the Goose Island "sister" bombers and they wanted $40 buck apiece. Virtually every bomber in the store was at least $8 to $20 more than I have spent elsewhere. Although pretty rare, I still think $50 for one bottle of Westvleteren Blonde is crazy. This is easily the highest price beer store that I have been to in the country. Don't waste your time! (744 characters)

Decided to kill five minutes in here during a walk around DuPont and was not disappointed with the selection of beer or spirits (funny enough, I bought no beer but a bottle of absinthe that I can get cheaper in Manhattan but decided what the ----). That being said, I had a "doorman" watching me at the beers and then when I walked to the liquor section I had a second guy asking me what I wanted and he will walk me to there (which he did and was nice about it so I can't really knock the service). The only thing that prevented me from splurging (OK, the one bottle of absinthe was a splurge but I live in Va Beach so I can't just somewhere close to home to find good stuff) was the price on everything. They had bottles of beer that I can't get anywhere else not only in sunlight/high temps but priced so high that sticker shock was my first reaction. I guess it's worth going at least once if you're an out of towner like me. (929 characters)

Nice selection of beers but that's probably due to the fact that they charge 20% or more compared to other places so you will find hard to find bottles but who knows how long they've been sitting on the shelf for. They're all about making the sale so you can't just browse around without getting hounded. If you are in a desparate need to find something like I was, then give them a try. Otherwise, I think they are just too overpriced. (436 characters)

I stumbled upon this store while walking through Dupont Circle. I was hoping to find a 6pk of OTWOA, but they had sold out. They still had BCBS and also had it on tap for growler fills (2012). The prices are outrageous, but the staff is very friendly and willing to help. I'd only hit this place for beer if I was in a pinch. Still enjoyed visiting and saw Russian River Supplication there crazily enough. (405 characters)

Might be the best selection I've seen so far in DC. The staff is also very friendly and the store is always clean. However, the prices are outrageous even for DC. I live right down the street but find myself go elsewhere to. I frequently find 6 packs at this store for 14.99 that can be had at other liquor stores in the neighborhood for 9.99. Bottom line is if you want a great selection and don't really care about price then this your place. (444 characters)

Ahh, 1 West Dupont. Super convenient to the metro, great selection of beer and spirits, but so many problems.

The staff is friendly, but almost invasive of your personal space. They seem anxious and jumpy, as well as fairly insistent that you buy and leave. I never enjoy interacting with them when I go here.

The quality rating gets a 1 because A) beers sit on the shelf for a good long while here and B) the price is so prohibitively high that it would be idiocy to actually buy some of the stuff. When I say that this store has the highest price in the entire city for every single beer they carry I do not exaggerate.

Atmosphere gets a 1 because again, the prices are so unapologetically high I actually laughed out loud.

Selection is I have to admit top notch. No getting around that. But let's play the comparison game for a moment. Below are beers that have been seen in DC. The first number is the typical DC price and the second is the actual price 1 West charged. This has all been verified with my own eyes.

Stone RIS: 9$ and 13$
Pumpking: 10$ and 13$
La Folie: 16$ and 26$
BCBCS: 17$ and 35$
Iron Fist Velvet Glove: 13$ and 25$

In summary, never shop here. If you are made of money, great, use it to take a cab to another store and buy from them. You still end up saving over shopping here. (1,308 characters)

This place is complete and utter bullshit. Save your money. I was excited to try a ton of IPAs that weren't available to me in GA. The owner lied to me about certain bottles that didn't have dates and said they came in on the truck "yesterday". I spent over $100 on brews here. He was just trying to make the sale. It's overpriced and complete BS. Connecticut Liquors was much better. Save your money and your time. I was lied to and no one appreciates that. It's bad business. Some of the breweries were FW, Troegs, and Green Flash.

EDIT: I just called the place to tell them about the beers I bought and the bad experience. They apologized without a care in the world and HUNG UP on me! DO NOT EVER FUCKING GO HERE! PLEASE BA's. THIS PLACE IS GARBAGE! (754 characters)

Holy bajeezus is this place overpriced and expensive. quick examples: 120 minute was $25. yeah 25 effing dollars. UNREAL. De Vinos & the place directly across the street from them, Virginia Market, both have it for $10 - $11. Russian River Damnation was $28, I know RR beers are super hard to get but where available the beer sells for around $11. lastly sixpoint resin was $15 a 4 pack. connecticut ave liquor has it for $10

Bottom line, the place has some rarities and hard to finds, but you will pay a pretty penny for them. even the regular stock stuff is usually $4 - $5 more than anywhere else in town.

I would recommend steering clear of this place b/c its just waaay too overpriced and instead checking out De Vinos, Virginia Market & Connecticut Ave Liquors for also great selections with far more reasonable prices. (828 characters)

This is probably my favorite place to go hunting for craft brews. They have a very wide selection that shifts with seasons but not too much. (Great selections of imperial stout even in summer and IPA even in winter!)

They carry things I never thought I'd find in a corner liquor store. For instance, I stopped in today looking to get six-pack of Bell's Kalamazoo Stout, since I know they carried it. I was delighted to find next to the Kalamazoo Stout, six-packs of Bell's Cherry Stout, Double Cream Stout, and Porter. They also have a lot of 22 oz. bottles from around the country.

The staff are very friendly and offer assistance when you walk in. They also offer to take the beer you've selected and keep it on their counter so you don't have to search with heavy six-packs on you.

The only drawback is that the beer they sell is expensive, and because few places carry those brews, they sell at highish prices. Safeway sells a six-pack of Dominion Oak Barrel Stout for about $1.50 less. (994 characters)

I’m in DC for work and found this joint through BA. I found their selection to be outstanding, well displayed and easy to find just about anything one could want. The prices were kind of high but it was worth paying a little more. I purchased a 6 pack of Palm for about a $1.50 more than I pay at home. The 750 ml’s were also a couple dollars more but I was here for quality not quantity. The one beer that I was disappointed in was Orval , they were asking $7 and some change. They also had the Oberon 2011 mini keg as well as some beers I’ve never seen before.
Overall the store was well worth the 5 block walk and confusion of Dupont circle. If you like clean well stocked stores this is your place. If you’re looking to save a few bucks, stay away. (760 characters)
