On tap at Iron Hill West Chester for the Belgium Comes to West Chester Event.

Pours a somewhat muddy brown color with a light tan head. Decent retention and good lacing.

The nose has a nice bit of underlying earth and pepper. Some spicy dryness and faint bit of cherries and skin. Light tartness coming through. Flavor really nice with an underlying tartness throughout. Cherry character and some very light general fruitiness. Some spiciness in the background. Dark malt character helps carry things through.

Body is medium with good carbonation. Lightly tart finish. Smooth body. Quite nice.

Big thanks goes out to Drjay once again for sending me the latest and greatest from Sly Fox. I am coming to expect these now, which is certainly a very good thing. I chilled this one down and served thee growler last night, pouring it into several different glasses. Consumed on 10/27/2008.

The pour was very nice, rich and very deep, dark color here. Nice clarity is shining through on this rusty colored beer. Some light carbonation noted as well. Good sized head, maybe two inches at max, had some decent staying power and really piled on the side glass sticky lace.

The aroma was rather odd. Nice spiciness layered on top of a definite lemon like citrus aroma. Hints of some light peach and maybe apple like flavors were bouncing around in here as well, very complex. The flavor was even more so. The initial taste was a light hoppy ale, mixed with an almost pepper like spiciness that continued on to a nice rounded out light grain fed base. Interesting mix of flavors here, as I was torn as to whether this was a Saison, or an IPA with some nice Belgian yeast. Smooth, easy follow through on here was the sealer of the deal. Nice carbonation never let it feel too heavy, and all the alcohol was very well hidden indeed. A bit big to drink a ton of , but the growler was finished with ease.

In the end, this was a very interesting beer. I am not sure exactly where it falls in the grand scheme of things, but it was definitely interesting to say the least. I would have no issue at all with trying this one again some day. A very solid offering indeed.

Appears a hazy, dark, copper toned brown with a fluffy white head that slowly fades into a mild cap. Scattered streaks of lacing stick to the glass like batter.
Smell is spicy, tart, black cherries, roasted nuts, cocoa, dried oregano, and tobacco.
Taste is of the mentioned aromas with mild funk, spices, fruit, and cocoa with doughy, dry yeast...wow. That yeast is a huge part of this brew. Pretty good stuff. It could almost pass as one of the saisons from Fantome.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied, yeasty, chewy, and fruity.

Growler was filled earlier today at the brewpub. Clear coppery amber with a two finger cap of fine off-white bubbles that quickly settled to a thin layer covering the beer. Fairly sticky, some clingy lacing. Aroma was fairly fruity, mostly berries, slightly vinous and earthy, floral hop notes with mild maltiness and a bit of yeast. Very interesting flavour and pretty odd for a saison. Fruity and tart up front, again reminiscent of strawberries and cherries, earthy red wine with just a bit of caramel and nuts from the darker grains. Slight spiciness and a hint of citrus zest. Fairly crisp and dry, lightish body with ample carbonation. I really wasn't expecting this flavour combo, but it really worked and was very tasty. A great experiment that really worked.

Poured from tap into Belgian Matilda style glass...at standard tap philly.
Pours a hazy brown with a slight orange hue. Not much head or lacing.
Really nice funk aroma here. Nice barnyard fruity banana funk...dare I say reminiscent of fantome...maybe just hoping...
Nice hoppy spicy peppery flavor. A bit sweet malt and caramel. Nicely dry and good carbonation. Really a great saison. Seems true to the style just a taaad sweet. And could use a hair more funk but an awesome brew nonetheless. Well worth a try.

A-Deep brownish copper with a thin white ring leaving spotty lace.

S-Light friuty sweetness and not much else.

T-Spicy sweet and dry, very dry.

M-Medium-light with a desert like drying finish. Akin to a dry red wine.

D-Nice, spicy dryness with a bit of sweetness in the back ground to help balance things out.

a: This was dark for a saison, a clear golden coppery color. It poured with a medium sized off-white head.

s: This smells funky and floral. I got some grassy hops and a little tart dark fruits. Minimal spicing.

t: May not be on style, but very tasty none the less. Dry overall with tart, funky grape and/or cherry flavors. A mild floral hop tingle at the very end.

m: Very creamy overall with gentle, foamy carbonation.

d: Not as spicy as some saisons, but a little bit more on the "wild" side in musty tartness. Also with stronger fruit elements than is usual. Overall, however, this works exceptionally well. I love this and hope to find it again one day.

A - Hazed deep amber, small white head has little retention and lacing.

S/t - Farmhouse funk, lemon peel, with an underlying sweet and tart cherry taste throughout.

M - A little heavy with a medium/full feel. Delicate carbonation that falls a little flat on the back end

O - A little two dimensional with the yeast funk and sweet/tart cherry flavors, but it works for a nice drink. Abv hidden well.

First I have ever seen or heard of this brew..

A- Light translucent caramel color. Sparkly and fizzy with a nice white head.

S- Smell was of wild berries and yeasty goodness.

T- Complex here. Undeniable sour notes, similar to a wild ale, with cherry really coming through. Wine-like quality as well, I'm think merlot. In comes the malts, roasted nut and toffee. Strange brew here, I like it.

M- Light bodied and really enjoyable to drink.

D- This was a fairly drinkable beer that I would love to sample again. Sly Fox does it again!

A: Orange-brown similar to iced tea with minimal head but nice lacing.

S: Roasty and chocolate flavors jump out with notes of citrus, sour, and funkiness in the background.

T: Chocolate, roastiness, and red fruits fight for top bill with some citrus and funky yeast following up on the finish.

M: Nice carbination and body with a crisp and dry finish.

D: I have had about four of these at the bar and now this growler and it has been out less than a week. This is a new favorite. I hope they make more.

visited slyfox on 12.11.08 for the first time. grabbed a growler of Saison Brune to take home.

pours a nice orange copper color with tints of red. great head but lasted like 2 seconds. smell was a crisp malty spicy smell with hops in the background. very citrusy as well.

taste was quite nice. good saison taste by style. malty - subtle hops, a bit alcoholicy at first, but mellows as you take a few more sips.

Pours a nice, consistent copper color with a strong white head that seems to float over the body. The taste is very complex. There are stronger hints of sour, particularly of tart cherries, than in most farmhouse's. has a bit of a merlot or cabernet type aftertaste for the wine lover. A bit chewy but far less so than other farmhouse's. I am not a real fan of the style but Sly Fox did a great job with this and I'd love to try it again.
