11/5...brewery taster. Pours bright gold, low foam. Sweet fruity fragrant floral nose. Somewhat of a peppery taster, notes of citrus, bubblegum, and yeasty funk. Spicy. Very nice.

Had this beer for the first time on draft at an outdoor sporting event. Poured medium yellow with a thin light head and lacing. Not much of an aroma. The taste features citrus: lemon and a hint of orange or pineapple and some spice. It is only slightly bitter. Nicely carbonated. Overall, this is a very nice saison and is delightful and refreshing on a warm day.

750 ml bottle was poured into a large tulip glass.

Appearance: A two finger billowy head was poured that reduced to a puffy layer. It is a slightly hazy golden straw yellow with good clarity and vision of tiny bubbles coming up through the glass. Spotty lacing down the glass as the beer was drank.

Smell: Vanilla, apple, pear, pilsner malts, powdery yeast, spicy, grassy

Taste: Nice sweetness to this beer. Powdery yeasty esters, green apple, pear, pilsner malts, pale malts, spicy, grassy, and some bitterness in the rear.

Mouthfeel: Light bodied, crisp, refreshing, a bit dry, a little chewy, and medium to high carbonation.

Overall: A very enjoyable saison. Definitely grew on me as it warmed up. Will look for more of this next time venturing out of New England.

this is very good saison. blonde, hazy, and really really heady. tall tall lacy head bone white rises up all airy and foamy way above the rim of the glass and holds on, covering my nose as i smell. smells like it was fermented real warm with a cool belgian strain that has notes of pineapple and pepper, lots of that high tone fruit ester thing, pleasantly light malt base, and balancing hops only. the flavor here is almost white wine-like, with a tannic grapey thing going on, and the smooth orchard fruit flavor of an off dry chardonnay. a bit more spice though, especially in the finish, a cool yeast here that is new to my palate in a lot of ways. its also dried the beer out incredibly well, no residual sugar here at all. carbonation is effervescent, explosive might be a better way to say it, really fizzy as i hold it in my mouth. i have always liked this brewery, although its been awhile since i have had any of their beers. i think this is a fantastic saison, maybe lacking a little of the depth some of the best in the world have, but its not far behind in a lot of ways. worth picking up for sure.

A: This poured a cloudy straw color with lots of fluffy white head.
S: It smelled like sour lager yeast and grassy hops, with some spicy and metallic character.
T: It tasted like spicy and mineral and grassy hops, with some sour lager yeast. It had a clean spicy aftertaste.
M: It was watery with lots of carbonation. Bubbly body.
D: This was a decent saison, with earthy scent and taste. It was a bit sour for my preferences, and the body was too fizzy. At least the finish was mellow, so it wasn't difficult to drink. Not bad, but really not a terribly impressive brew.

750ml bottle into a goblet.

A: Pours a hazy golden color with lots of carbonation rising up to the top. The head is two fingers high, and is barely off-white in shade. It has a fluffy texture and good retention, as well. Lacing is very thick on the sides of the glass.

S: There's a good amount of noble hops coming forward. Hiding behind this is a spicy note coming from the yeast - it's a good character loaded with bread, herbs, and black pepper; but lacking some of the unique notes featured in superior saisons.

T: Sweeter than the nose indicated. A touch of hops to start, gradually becoming sweeter near the finish. It's a slight cherry sweetness, and it blends well with the yeast spiciness. This tastes very metallic on the first sip, actually - this goes away after several more. Candied sugar flavors go up after even more sips. It works, but not perfectly.

M: While it's dry and drinkable, I'm missing some of the bone dry "evaporate off of the tongue" sensations I get from the best in the style. Nor is it particularly creamy before the dryness hits. But, it's still very drinkable. It's well carbonated as expected.

O: This is a really solid saison that nails all the basic notes well. But there in lies the problem - it doesn't do much apart from nailing those basic notes well. It's not bone dry, and the fruit/spice notes aren't particularly vivid or defined. You know what, though? It's still a decent saison, well worth drinking (but not my first choice in the style...)

750ml Bottle from the Potsdam NY IGA for $10

Appearance - Gold colour with an average size fizzy/frothy white head. There is an average amount of carbonation showing and there is some fair lacing. The head lasted for 5 minutes or so before it was gone.

Smell - Cloves, lemons, grapes, breads/grains

Taste & Mouth - There is an above average amount of carbonation and I can taste green grapes, cloves and lemon juice/zest. There is also a honey sweetness and a bit of a yeastiness.

Overall - Nice stuff with some good fruity notes. Well worth trying but not something I'd go out of my way to grab again.

Reviewed 6/9/13 750 ML bottle in a tulip

A - Pours a clear gold with a thin white head that dissipates quickly. Leaves little to no lacing.

S - Not a ton going on in the aroma. Getting some grain and a bit of lemon and citrus. As the beer warms I start to get some pepper and clove.

T - Very clean tasting for a Saison. Slightly sweet, a bit of lemon in the middle finishes with some earthy hop and low bitterness. Pretty dry, hints of pepper and other spices.

M - Light body and low carbonation, very smooth and easy to drink.

O - A decent but overall underwhelming Saison.

750ml corked bottle bought from The Light House, Jordanstown

Poured a light golden yellow colour. White head poured big, thick and fluffy and a steady stream of carbonation maintained a good covering throughout... some sticky lacing...

A lot going on in the aroma... lots of spicy yeast mixed with tart juicy fruits (pears, grapefruits, mangoes, limes), very floral, talcum powder notes, light honey and candy sugar sweetness, some earthy farmyard traces, hay, some rubberiness, fresh bread, some pine...

Taste - Tart spicy fruits (pears, grapefruits, apples), pithy notes, quite a lot of yeastiness, floral honey, quite perfumed, light earthy funk, grassy hops, chalky, faint coriander, peppery, some thyme herbalness, metallic, sea salt... flavours develop well as the beer warms up...

M&D - Pretty sharp and dry... Light body... Extremely refreshing and drinkable at 6.9%...

Overall - A top class Saison... As good as any i've had... recommended...

Appearance: Good clarity. Pale gold in color. Large, foamy white head is not as persistent as it should be.

Smell: Lemon zest, honey, pale malt, and coriander make for a truly delectable aroma. The bouquet is big, without being overpowering.

Taste: A distinct, sawdusty, barnyard taste is sweetened and balanced by honey, and a spritz of citrusy esters. A full, moderate bitterness settles in towards the end of each mouthful, but does not linger on.

Mouthfeel: Medium-light, with medium-high carbonation. Effervescent, but with more smoothness than usual--nice.

Overall: Probably the best Saison I've had to date. Other styles are usually too spritley and fruity. This version stays true to the farmhouse, spice, and bitterness complexities a good old fashioned Saison should have, and milks them for all they're worth, while managing to stay crowd-pleasing. Truly impressed and...dare I say, inspired?

750 ml bottle into tulip glass, best before 1/27/2014. Pours lightly hazy bright golden color with a 2-3 finger dense and rocky white head with awesome retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Spotty foamy lacing clings around the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big apple skin, pear, lemon zest, grape, grass, straw, floral, clove, light honey, bread, funk, and yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with good complexity and balance of fruity/spicy/funky yeast notes; with good strength. Taste of big pear, apple, lemon zest, pepper, clove, grape, light honey, grass, straw, bread, light funk, floral, and yeast earthiness. Lingering notes of light fruits, grass, straw, clove, pepper, floral, funk, light honey, bread, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Awesome balance and complexity of fruity/spicy/funky yeast flavors; with a good malt balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium bodied; with a very smooth and crisp mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a highly excellent saison style! All around excellent balance and complexity of yeast ester flavors with moderate malt balance; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A highly enjoyable offering.

Thanks to lookrider for the opportunity. Corked and caged 750mL bottle. Pours a glowing summer sun yellow, opaque with yeast but with a dense cap od white that sticks through the entire drink. Terrific.

Yeasty, active carbonation brings up the aroma of orange peel, coriander, powder, ginger and lemon zest. Not much fruit or other complexities here.

Bright lemon zest, orange peel, and powdery yeast and coriander. Very bright. Unobtrusive malt character. Finishes very clean, powdery and palate scrubbing.

Active carbonation, bright and lightens up the yeast considerably. Not detection of alcohol. High carbonation doesn't impede the flavor profile either. Ideal.

Very nice take on a saison, not very complex but a bright beer, perfect refresher. Clean and crisp.

Poured into a snifter. Label says 5/24/14.

A- Pours a medium golden color with a 1/4 inch white head that doesn't retain long before shrinking to a thick ring around the edge of the glass and light, bubbly surface foam. Slippery non-stick lacing.

S- Sweet wheat smell with plenty of saison yeast aroma. Notes of honey, coriander and a hint of rosemary. Very floral.

T- Flavor is somewhat neutral. A little wheat here, a touch of yeast there plus some very faint spice and a mild alcohol kick. Pretty average all the way around and not much to say.

M- Also a letdown. Medium-low carbonation is nowhere near where I like it to be for this style. Semi-watery feel.

O- I don't know if I just have too high of standards for saisons now that I've had some of the best (Avec Les Bons Voeux, Saison Rue, etc.) but this one just did not do it for me. This is only the second Sly Fox beer I've had, the other being Incubus and I remember enjoying it very much. Shame this wasn't as good.

First had: on tap at TJ's, Paoli, PA

Golden-yellow pour, slightly hazy, with a finger or so of fluffy white head that retained well and left a bit of lacing on the glass. Aroma of pale malt sweetness, citrus, spicy yeast. Similar taste, malt sweetness, rock candy, citrus notes, grass, yeast, herbal hops, moderate bitterness, slightly medicinal. Light-medium body, easily drinkable, but falls short overall for the style.

Huge thanks to Centennial for sending this one my way. Poured into a tulip. This one pours a slightly hazy golden straw color with three fingers of fluffy white head. Thick gobs of sticky lace.

Reminds me somewhat of a cider. Apples in the aroma with a sharp tart edge. The pallet gives of notes of sweet apples, wet hay and a bit of grass. Mostly sweet with a funky edge.

The body is medium with soft carbonation. Overall this one is solid. Enjoyable enough.

Thin head on a clear golden body with nice lacing. Aroma contains candied fruit, mostly orange and Belgian yeast. Flavor is pretty much your generic saison with spicy Belgian yeast, clove, corriander, banana citrus and light malt mustiness. Medium to light body and moderate carbonation. A very standard but still good saison.

Bottles 5 days out of code but let's see how it tastes anyway.

Very pale semi hazy yellow color with tons of visible effervescence. Bright white crystal like head. Funky barnyard smells, a touch of skunk. Medicinal phenols become present as the beer airs out.

Extremely vinous in its qualities. Bright and brisk carbonation is still there. Sour white grapes slide across the tongue, subtle tart citric explosion at mid palate. Coarse grain balance the fruitiness. Nutty like flavors compliment the other flavors in the beer. Full mouth feel.

Very in your face for an aged saison, makes me wonder what its like fresh. If it isn't good lay it down and forget about, makes for a pretty interesting drink. I wouldn't go about doing it myself though, just found it in the store that way.

Again, I wouldnt go out of my way to age this thing past the best by date, but it was still decent even past it. I'm clueless to how it tastes fresh however.

750ml corked and caged offering into a pub glass. The brew appears a clear golden color with 2 fingers worth of white head. A constant stream of bubbles maintains a half finger of white across the top.

The aroma of this brew is fresh and grainy with a sweetness about the nose somewhat like corn and bubblegum. The yeast is evident with a clove spice and very mild pepper inclusion. As it warms up, it almost gets a candy-like smelling attribute about it. Overall not bad.

The taste is fresh and grainy with a mild sweetness that blends into something like bubblegum. Belgian yeast aspects are present with bubblegum, clove and other mild spices vaguely reminiscent of pepper. As the brew is swirled around in the mouth, it picks up a mild pear flavor.

This is a medium bodied brew with a lively level of carbonation that stays light and refreshing in the mouth. The nearly 7% abv is felt mildly across the back initially but really picks up some strength as the experience continues. Overall not a bad brew. Nothing outstanding but also nothing wrong with it. Quite clean and well done. Worth a try if you never had it before.

Big thanks to yourefragile for grabbing a bottle of this for me. Served in a Mikasa tulip.

Pours a clear light golden color with loads of visible carbonation bubbles that continue all the way down. Big fluffy white head with a sheet of lacing on the sides of the glass. Great retention, as it settles to a half-inch cap for the duration.

The nose is clean with some light spicing and a very faint fruitiness. A touch of earth in the background. Everything is a bit muted, which is a bit surprising given how heavy the carbonation is; I would have thought that those little bubbles would have been pushing out a bit more aroma, especially as it warmed.

Flavor is much more intense than the nose with some nice spicy yeast notes plus a bit of apricot and pear. Other stone fruits in there as well. Some white pepper through the finish. It gets a touch fruitier as it warms up. The feel is dry and somewhat bitter. Very crisp. Body is light to medium.

Overall, this is a very nice sipping beer and great for warm weather on the deck. Recommended.

Served on-tap in a 12 oz chalice

Appearance – A medium golden body with a slight off-white head. The head is filled with large carbonation bubbles and upon fading leaves a bit of lacing on the side of the glass.

Smell – The smell is largely fruity up front, with nice citrus and some more tropical aromas. There is a biscuit-malty aroma toward the middle which is mixed in with an ever so slight astringent “funky” aroma.

Taste – A little on the sour side initially with some lemon and citrus. The more subdued sourness gives way to some hoppy and sweeter flavors toward the middle - sweeter citrus fruits with some more tropical’s; orange, mango, sweet lemon (lemonade) and even a little sweet apple. These sweet flavors are mixed with some yeasty flavors and a more sour green apple-lemon flavor, which come into play and rounds out the flavor profile.

Mouthfeel – A lighter bodied beer with a moderate to fairly high level of carbonation. The carbonation suits the beer quite nicely with the lighter body making it quite drinkable, although its thickness is lacking a little bit and it could use a bit more.

Overall – A nice “wild” brew. A little thin in the body which when mixed with the sourness makes it taste a little like an ale with a bit of lemon squeezed in (but just a bit; overall it is vastly better than this). It is well worth a try.
