I visited Sly Fox as the last of the stops on the Philly Beer Rally. I was really tempted to skip this stop and stay longer at Victory because I love the place. I also have had Sly Foxes beers on tap at Standard Tap and was never really impressed. What a surprise then that I loved the place and the beer. Its location is a little weird, in the middle of shopping center, which is another reason I wanted to skip it. The inside, however, is a really cozy bar area with the beer operations evident through the glass and a fairly busy restaurant area. I didn't get to see the upstairs. The hit of the evening, though, was the outdoor patios, which were great on a nice spring day.
The beers that I tried were exceptional, although I doubt that any will show up on the taps at Standard Tap. They seemed to have been small batch beers brewed for the Rally. I had the cask conditioned Amarillo IPA, which was exception. The Instigator Doppelbock was another good one, but the star of the evening was the Gang Aft Agley, the Scotch Ale that is aged in whiskey barrels. It was outstanding.
The bartender was knowledgeable about Sly Fox's beers and about beer in general, and kept up with a demanding crowd of Beer Advocates and local beer drinkers.
I only had the free appetizers that were put out for the BAs so it may not be fair for me to rate the food. The free food was okay, nothing to write home about. My wife ordered from the menu, and said that her salmon salad was a little past its prime. The menu also appeared to be a little on the lightweight side, and I'm not. It reminded me of a dieter's heaven.
That is little to quibble with, however, with a place I didn't think I would like at all. I will go back for the beer and will probably give more of the food a try.
