The thing about bucks is, they’re big, strong, and they make their presence felt. That notion sorta inspired us to brew Eight Point IPA, the first beer we ever brewed at Devils Backbone. It’s got a nice hoppy presence but is approachable. It’s gold, medium-bodied, and made with four malts, plus brash American hop varieties like Simcoe, Centennial, Comet, Amarillo, and Citrus.
We don’t have any proof that a buck would like it, but we’re pretty sure they’d respect it.
Malts: Pilsner, Vienna, CaraStan, Torrified Wheat, Black Malt, Dextrose
Hops: Simcoe, Centennial, Comet, Amarillo, Citra
IBU: 45
COLOR: Gold

Devils backbone was one of the late 2000s breweries that helped build a lot of momentum for beer in Virginia. They were purchased by AB in 2016 but it seems they’ve been left to their own devices, just with a much larger distribution footprint. I have no issue with this but if you have some moral quandary about it, there it is.
This and Vienna Lager have become the flagship beers for DB. As such, it takes on the mantle of representing Virginia beer in other states where the more acclaimed Va Breweries don’t have a presence. Let’s see how it stacks up.
A-Horribly weak looking golden color (pee), two fingers of nice fluffy head though.
S-Pine, honey, tangerine. Forestry. I had to stick my nose in the head to really pick up in anything, but the aroma itself is pleasant.
T-First sip all I got was malt, but subsequent tastes have gotten better. Some light piney, and a lot of grass that actually is really pleasant on the tongue. A bit of citrus in the finish. This beer went from a 2.75 to a 4 in this category the more I drank it. It’s a very well balanced, pleasant flavor. Very woodsy, fitting considering the location and theme of the brewery.
M-Good bitter aftertaste, medium body, lightly carbonated
O- up until the second sip I was ready to raze this beer to the ground, but the more I drink it the more I like it. It’s a solid, if unspectacular, beer whose balanc Levi’s its greatest asset.

Picked up a sixer at Shopper's on this fine June Friday afternoon. Big, billowy head and nice golden color. Flavor and nose are both a bit grainy with herbal hops and a nice bread note, but maybe more of an APA. I do like the texture, and this is fine, but maybe not a full bore IPA.

Poured into a tall clear pint glass. Body is a clear amber with a small head about a finger or less thick, decent lacing, not so good retention.
Aroma: Floral and herbal hops, toasted malts and bread, resin, pine, grapefruit peel, orange, tangerine, and maybe some pineapple.
Taste: really tasting bitter malts and herbal flavors, along with some citrus zest. Body is medium-light.

Clear gold, big eggshell head, good retention, spotty lace
Floral and citrusy hop aroma, a bit of toasty malt
Kinda generic "C" hop flavor, toasty malts
Medium bodied, appropriately carbonated
Better IPAs are brewed in the mid-Atlantic that aren't produced by ABI
