Could be a bit more brilliant in color. Light orange, closing in on dark yellow.
Resinous pine aroma overtakes a forward pungent grapefruit. Excellent. The stuff of dreams.
Front flavor matches the aroma. A huge burst of resinous hops balances to nice smooth grapefruit. The finality is a bitterness that is a bit too resiny and full. Could use a bit more balance, which explains the light color.
Fills the mouth, but not cloying. Lingers, but doesn't ruin.
Excellent beer from an excellent brewery. It's fair to say that DB is the best, if not the most exciting brewery in VA.

Bottle > Pint Glass
A - Pours a nice clear gold, one finger of foamy white head, medium lacing.
S - Smells of burnt caramel malt, rye, some toasted grains, a little floral notes, some darker earthy hop tones to it.
T - Malt up front, at first its a tad sweet then evolves rapidly into a bitter rye like taste with some floral hop notes coming out, but its very acrid, almost soapy in taste.
M - Too bitter in a bad way, that weird flavor lasts too long.
O - Not an American IPA by any means, for sure and English style with too much dark soapy rye like bitterness to be really enjoyed.

Appearance: A gusher from a 12 oz bottle - not something you often see; pours clear, with the amber liquid capped by a modest head that leaves a few splashes of lace

Smell: Herbal and piney with a strong base of caramel malt

Taste: Malt forward, with caramel tones establishing the base in a big way; herbal/piney hops layer on top and linger through the finish but this is quite a malty beer

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation - not sure why it was a gusher with this mouthfeel

Overall: Tastes more like a malty amber ale than an IPA and certainly rather English in style; not bad if that is the type of beer one likes

single from the Caboose, Ashland

a: single bottle into a wide chalice, the beer is an attractive golden amber in color, topped witht a healthy layer of white carbonation that shows decent retention and some light lace, a swirl of the glass brings out a full, creamy head

s: bready pale malts make up the base, with a mild caramel addition - I much prefer things this way...cleaner and drier, citrus peel and young pine combine with some juicy tropical notes (passionfruit) to form a very pleasant hop aroma - not particularly aggressive or pungent, but very well balanced, and solidly into ipa territory

m: carbonation on the lower end of moderate, delicate and creamy, body around the lighter side of medium

t: the flavors here are similar to the nose - hop notes of citrus and green pine with a lightly malty character and sweetness, bitterness grows from light to full in the finish

o: a really solid, good ipa overall, that could stand some tweaking but does well for itself as is
