Poured into a nonic a clear medium golden with a sticky half finger white head that left a broken thick ring of lace behind as it settled very slowly.Lighter leafy and citric hops in the nose, more leafy than anything,a bit of toast and caramel malt as well.I really like the subtle hop complexity to this beer, almost every quality of a a hop comes through in the flavor profile.Apricot and mango notes along with leafy/minty flavors that meld into a grapefruit rind flavor, all over top of a caramel biscuit base,it's even a little boozy for how "small" iot is.A pretty solid IPA from the commonwealth to the north, pretty complex and flavorful.

S: Orange and fruity hops, resiny sweetness, some toasty malt character behind the hops.

L: Crystal clear, golden yellow, white creamy head that dissipates. Good lacing.

T: Resiny and citrus hops with a slightly sweet, toasty malt character. Medium bitterness, fairly smooth but present. Dryness follows leading to a dry, hoppy finish. Smooth, resiny, almost spicy hop flavor.

M: Medium bodied, medium carbonation, fairly light.

Really solid IPA. I enjoyed the malt character which wasn't too head and complemented the hops nicely.

A: Pours a fairly hazy golden-orange color, with active bubbles of carbonation. The tall, off-white head has a frothy, densely foamy texture. Retention is sturdy, and a significant amount of lacing sticks to the top of the glass in a thick ring, with lesser ribbons deposited below that one.

S: Mild malty aromas, with a bit of caramel. Hop aromas are balanced; citric and fruity notes are most prominent, but it's not an especially vibrant nose overall. Some fainter herbal/earthy character also seems present.

T: Some sugar cookie malt flavor up front. Light caramel flavor. Hop bitterness rises quickly and lingers leisurely. Hop flavors seem equally citric (bitter rind/pith flavors, especially), herbal, and earthy. There's also a perfumey/fruity background note that never comes to the fore or fades completely.

M: Medium body. Carbonation is a bit aggressive for an IPA. Hop bitterness also builds into near-puckering dryness, which ends almost seltzery.

D: This is a flawed, but drinkable IPA. It looks the part and has a good flavor, with enough bitterness for any hophead. The aroma and mouthfeel aren't tickling my fancy quite so much, though. They're not bad, but there are other, more rounded options out there.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a Samuel Adams Boston Lager glass.

Appearance: Pours a translucent, bright, golden color. Has a large, fizzy head that dissipates slowly and leaves some decent lacing.

Smell: Citrusy, grassy hops backed by a bit of sweet maltiness.

Taste: Moderately hoppy. It's not as hoppy as I was expecting from an IPA; it seems like more in the range of a pale ale. Still, good citrusy, grassy hop notes backed by a grainy, slightly caramelly maltiness.

Mouthfeel: Light-bodied and crisp.

Overall: A pretty standard, moderately hoppy IPA. Devils Backbone is a bit of an up-and-coming brewery in Virginia, so I enjoy seeing them making pretty solid brews. I'll be interested to see how they grow and expand.

appearance - a bit clouded with a darker golden colour.

smell - a somewhat citrus smell with an overall balanced feel for an IPA.

taste - one of the best tastes i have ever encountered in an IPA. super yummy. very balanced with the smell and also very hoppy. not as bitter as most but just the right amount of bitterness for an IPA for me.

mouthfeel - just the right amount of bite. not too bitter, not very weak.

overall - if you enjoy IPAs, this one is a must. not my favorite IPA of all time, but it is so enjoyable and i consider myself very lucky to live close enough to be able to buy this wonderful beer. definitely recommended to anyone who loves that bite from a well crafted beer.

Another Carpool Bar find in Herndon, VA, this IPA shows a clear amber color with a decent white head that leaves a generous lace. The aroma notes very subtle citrus and dusty wheat, pretty weak but not offputting. The flavor speaks up with a little more "backbone" including a grassy hop over a caramel malt base. The hops are definitely adequate and the balance works well as you work through this medium bodied brew with delicate but adequate carbonation. Drinkable, refreshing, reasonably hoppy. Not a disappointment and definitely worthy of a try.

Poured from bottle into pint glass

Appearance – Pours a medium golden color with a huge, just off-white head. The head is thick and beautiful and has wonderful retention. It eventually fades however to give a great level of lacing.

Smell – The smell was a wonderfully sweet and lightly hopped smell. The sweetness was of a nice mango aroma mixed with caramel and some citrus. The hop aromas were of an earthy and grapefruit aroma, which complemented the sweet quite well.

Taste – The taste begins with a bready and very lightly caramel sweetened base. At the start there are hop flavors of an earthy and pine nature. As the taste advances toward the middle a grapefruit hop flavor combines with the earthy and pine hops. This bready and hop flavor takes the taste to its finish. In the end a very long lasting bitter earthy and pine hop flavor are left to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The beer is very chewy with a nice creaminess and a slightly below average carbonation level. The creaminess and chewiness is great for the bready and hop flavors and makes for a great feeling brew.

Overall – While the nose is deceiving in its sweetness, it is a very nice feeling bitter IPA. The hop aftertaste is one of the longest lingering I have had for such a low abv brew and is rather pleasant. A very nice IPA.
