I have an aunt & uncle who live in DC and I was down to stay with them for a fest recently, after which, I headed for Dupont Circle where I always have a good time. I stopped in at Whole Foods Market, where I found this poor, lost rabbit who was running late for a very important date with The CANQuest (TM) and kept looking at his pocket watch. I scooped him up and brought him home, but I am still CANfused as to why a White Rabbit is on a Red Ale. It's a CANundrum if ever one existed.

From the CAN: "Slainte Cheers"; "Virginia Heartland".

Once the Crack! was heard, I sped the rabbit on his way with an inverted Glug. The pseudo-cascade was perfect and resulted in a finger of tawny head that quickly dissipated, leaving some nice lacing in its wake. The color was a deep coppery-red (SRM = > 17, < 22) and looked like the hair color of a former girlfriend. I am not a huge fan of filtration, but this was filament-bright, adding to the overall appearance of the beer. Nose had a light grassiness to accompany the biscuity maltiness and I found this odd for an Irish-style Red as I usually think of them as being quite malty, where this was more subdued. Actually, in reading up on it, this was well within spec for the style, exhibiting a caramel maltiness in the mouth with just a hint of the grassiness that I noted on the nose. Mouthfeel was medium and I found myself drinking through it quite quickly. "Easy-drinking beer" may be a cliche, but I am unabashed in using it in this instance. The finish was semi-sweet, but just about right for my tolerance of sweet beers. Its relatively low ABV would make it a good CANdidate for the cooler.

A spectacular looking brew, perfect clarity with more than enough suds on top. Fresh toasted bread, spicy rye, faint toffee, & woody hops in the aroma. Lush crispness, smooth creamy body. Lots of malt to wade in, some caramel then some spicy rye ... all meld very well. Clean palate throughout. Quick smack of hop bitterness keeps this ale in check. Some pretty stellar drinking here, sessionable as it grows on me sip after sip. We have a winner here.

12 oz can, poured into a pint glass

Appearance: Pours a beautiful, clear, deep, dark, reddish mahogany color with two and a half fingers of white-colored head that quickly dissolved away into a thin lacing of foam that completely covered the top of the beer.

Aroma: Very aromatic with tons of bready, toasted malt, imparting notes of freshly baked bread or biscuits. There’s also notes of caramel, black pepper, heather, and hints of piney, floral, hops.

Taste: Very, very good. Lots of toasted malt up front, biscuit-like and bready, followed by lots of caramel-like sweetness, touches of black pepper, and finished with hints of floral, piney hops. Quite delicious!

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied and nicely effervescent, as there’s quite a bit of good carbonation to tickle the taste buds. With an ABV of 5.6%, there is no alcohol on the palate.

Overall: This is quite the delicious, Irish-style red ale. Malty and slightly sweet, it’s another great beer from Devil’s Backbone, one of my favorite Virginian breweries.

On tap @ the brand spanking new Devils Backbone Outpost Brewery (Lexington, VA) on 3/9/12. Served in a clear plastic cup.

Pours a clear copper, with a ½ finger of slightly off-white head. This retains at about the same width, leaving back some decent looking spotty swathes of lace. The aroma smells fresh, leafy, and citric, with an underlying malty push of buttered toast and sweet caramel. This is nice.

The taste has a firm feeling leafy and citric bite to it, with sweet balancing caramel malt and a toasty and buttered presence that is really leaving a favorable impression on me. The finish is dry and leafy with a lightly spicy and bitter feel. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a firm pricklier carbonation in the mouth that is managing to be lively and crisp yet still pretty smooth on the palate as well.

I really liked this. It’s definitely more of an Irish Red now and should probably be reclassified as such; with notes of caramel, butter, toast, and firm hop bitterness that gives this just enough of a refreshing crispness. I could drink a whole lot of this and not get bored.

On tap at Devils Backbone Outpost

A- pours a rusty copper color with a two-finger creamy white head, good retention and tons of lace sticking as it settles

S- grainy malt, slightly toasted, a touch of caramel and clean hop

T- nice toaster malt profile that starts out slightly sweet with some caramel and dark fruit notes, transition to slightly toasted with a dry, clean hop finish

M- light-medium body, moderate carbonation with a smooth finish

O- nice malt profile, well balanced, solid amber

A big thanks to the legendary woodychandler for this beer. Poured from a 12 oz. can. Has a pretty deep amber color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell if of caramel malts, some sweetness. Taste is well balanced, caramel malts, some hops, tasty and very easy drinking. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a fine beer and disappearing quickly.

Poured on had tap at Pizza Paradiso Alexandriahad into a shaker pint.

An absolutely perfect copper amber, glowing deep orange and clear. Very creamy tan one finger head presented with a nice puck.

Nose has a yeasty sticky caramel, and muted malt sense. Quite closed not much really going on.

Palate comes with a nice creamy mouthfeel and moderate combination. Slight hints of grass and mild hop bitterness. A very slight twinge of chewy grapefruit and citrus on the finish. Caramel sweetness seems to be missing and lacking a little. Warmth brings out more character but still toned down.

Different a little bit of a spin on the style, not bad.

Reddish copper, with an initial 2 finger light tan head that dissipates to a film over the brew, leaving no lacing. Carbonation is evident.

Initial aroma reminiscent of vanilla pudding, but that mostly dissipates with the head. A bit of citrus and some faint toasted malt aromas.

Light caramel with bitter tea and citrus. Occasional light sweet malt, but mostly dry. Light toast.

Crisp and peppery. Light to moderate in body. Drying on the finish. More burn in the throat then I'd expect from a 5.5, but then I have been having some heatburn issues lately.

A decent beer, I really like the color. Pretty easy drinking. It's satisfies me, even though I prefer sweeter brews.

The beer pours a nice foamy head that dissipates quickly. The beer itself is a clear red amber that has a slight orangish brown hue. The beer leaves some lacing on the glass but not much.

The beer smell is exceptionally sweet but a little bitter as well. The smell comes with notes of sweet malt notes that resemble toffee. The beer also has a slight cinnamon nose and an earthy hop presence as well. Overall, the beer smell like a tea with orange added to it. The scent is pretty nice and subdued but not weak.

The beer taste is the best part of the beer. The beer taste is a bit sweet with a chamomile like flavor and a malt note that comes with a toffee and toasted bread taste. The hops also provide a slightly bitter and orange taste to the brew that marks a nice contrast to the tea like taste. Overall, the taste is pretty good and, while it does share some of the same notes of other red ales, the hop notes sets it apart in a good way.

The mouthfeel is on the lighter end of being medium bodied.The carbonation is very little but still gives the beer some much needed texture. Other than that, the beer is pretty smooth.

Overall, a pretty good Irish Red Ale and one that doesn't lack in flavor. I highly recommend getting this brew.

Served in a Devil's Backone willibecher.

Without research, I don't know who this Reilly is, but apparently he likes reds (and probably red-heads, too...but, then, who doesn't?). This brew pours a clear orange amber topped by a a bit more than a finger of whitish micro-foam. The nose comprises toffee, hoppy citrus, and some white biscuits. The taste is similar, but the caramel notes are watered-down, the hops melt into a bland floral bitterness, and a strange minty-ness (I think that's how to describe it) creeps in as well. The body is light, with a light carbonation and a crisp, semi-dry finish. Overall, a rather average red, but it's nice to see new things popping up down here.

Toasty and easy to drink a lot of. This beer pours an orangy-amber color into a pint glass. A hard pour gives you a medium size somewhat off-white head with average retention. Some lacing on the glass.

Aroma is mostly sweet bready malt with some grassy hops thrown in as well.

Taste is more of the same. Caramel malt, somewhat sweet, some rich bready malt as well and grassy hops. There is a little sweet toffee like flavor here too.

Mouthfeel is crisp and light. A good session type beer.

Nothing earth shattering but a nice everyday/session type beer.

Pours a deep red with a creamy tan head. Head has some nice retention but no lacing. Aroma is caramel malt, fruit, and some earthy hops. The taste follows right along with the aroma and mirrors it closely in fruit and hops notes. A little thin on the palate but not bad. A tasty red ale.

Decent Irish red ale. Not hoppy at all. Poor aroma. DRy slightly alcoholic finish. Malty with a lighter carbonation. Lingeriing caramel malt flAvor in finish.

Poured a red body with decent head and lace and the aroma is bland as I get touches of sweet malts and hops but not too much really going on. The rest of the beer is the same as the beer is light, smooth, minimal hops add some but not complete balance and the beer is just an easy drinking caramel and toffee sweet malt mess that isn't bad but not something I want again.

Served on-tap in a Shaker pint at Beer Run (Charlottesville, VA).

A: Brownish-red with 1/2 finger of beige head with good retention and plenty of lacing.

S: Caramel and toasted malt with fairly snappy floral hops

T: A good solid Irish ale with malty, toasty, caramel and grain notes and a slightly heavier handed dose of floral and light citrus hops. Very smooth and enjoyable pint.

M: Light to medium bodied with ample carbonation and clean finish.

O: This is a really nice effort from DB -- good representation of the roasty-toasty malts with a good dose of caramel and a good crisp hop schedule with light citrus, herbal, and floral components. Would definitely try this one again and pretty sessionable as not too sweet -- grain over caramel to give solid maltiness without too much sweetness.

Poured straight into a large tulip style glass. Dark amber with hints of orange, and a one and half finger head which quickly goes down to a one finger head, which in turn dissipates down to a very light froth covering the surface of the beer. Nose is all sweet caramelly amber malt, roasted grains, warm bread pudding, a touch of milk chocolate, a hint of minerality, and some sweet floral notes from the hops. Altogether, it’s a sweet, crisp, clean inviting nose, and thoroughly appropriate for the style. Front of the tongue sees tart sweetness, while the midpalate sees a lovely expansion of the sweet malty flavors, including roasted grain and sweet bread notes, dark cherry, blood orange, and mildly tart apple. Back of the tongue sees a surprising, and well-placed hop bitterness, and a surprising and very subtle sense of lighter-roast, berry forward fresh coffee. The finish is a nice balance between the bitter and sweet and is very light on the palate, which reflects the surprising lightness of this beer overall. This style is not supposed to be terribly complex - it is meant as a session beer and this one is certainly sessionable, both in flavor and lower abv. Unlike some other Irish reds, the malty sweetness never becomes cloying or heavy and the balancing hop bitterness is wonderfully executed. You may have dozens, even hundreds of better beers this year, but you might not find a better take on the Irish red ale.

This is a dark copper beer; impervious to light, the foreboding body is home to a large school of carbonation bubbles rising to meet a thin wispy crust of foam.

There are minor notes of caramel; the palate is hit with a few bites of apple and nuts, all followed in a semi-sweet malt backwash. The body is easy-going - the beer is a simple one without any complexities.

A basic but decent beer that is unpretentious and a highly quaffable rendition of this style.
