a: served in a curved DBB logo glass, the beer is a hazy dark amber in color, topped with an off-white layer of head that soon falls back, some lace

s: sweet caramel and darker toasted grains, nutty toffee, heavy malts offset with big resinous wet hop aromas, dark pine and citrus, lots here to latch onto, smells great

m: carbonation light-medium in level, medium bodied, smooth naturally conditioned feel

t: flavors of caramel grain, heavily toasted toffee, nutty and earthy at times, toasted grain bread, big on both malt and hop flavor - balancing the sweetness well, juicy wet hop notes, lots of dark pine resins and a numbing bitter in the finish, really tasty stuff verging on a score bump

d: easy, a flavorful ale that varies widely from usual perceptions of the style

enjoyed with dinner on the brewpub porch while en-route to Brewgrass festivities

A nice first sampling of the most award-winning brewery in Virginia in the last year and a half. Brewed to honor the first commercial sale of hops in the state of Virginia in more than a century. DB was supplied with hand-picked Cascade hops to the tune of 100+ pounds. From the Nelson County hop yard of David Bernard.

Poured from a growler into my Guinness pint glass, it shows a translucent dark-amber to brown appearance, much more reddish when held up to a light. A 2+ finger head of light tan from the initial "warm" pour--1 finger head from a colder pour. The head recedes rather quickly leaving nice lacing.

Smells distinctly of coffee, especially when it's warm, and maybe a bit of dark chocolate with some nice citrusy hops to boot.

Sweet malt up front followed by a bit of light coffee and then a stronger herbal earthiness I've never tasted before. I'm assuming it's because of the "wet hopped" Cascade. Good lasting bitterness on the follow-through.4.5 might be a bit high, but I gave it because of the original (for me) taste.

Very smooth. Gives the tongue a decent coating without being sticky. A bit prickly on the tongue with a nice alcohol burn in the throat.

Incredibly drinkable. I can zip through a glass in a matter of minutes, which is good, as the growler says to drink within 48 hours and I have to work tomorrow night. I'll report on the sessionability when I'm through.

Poured from a growler into my Flying Mouflon glass. It poured a murky, orange caramel color with a thick foamy head filling the top two inches of the glass.

The fresh cascade hops really stand out in the aroma giving it a herbal, slightly peppery flavor with some moderate notes of of citrus. The fresh hops are pretty bold, it's tough to get anything else in the aroma besides them. They are pretty good and definitely fresh though.

Again, the taste is showing lots of fresh cascades throughout with peppery, herbal and citrus flavors to them. A little caramel peeks through in the finish. Again, the hops are bold, fresh and pretty appealing overall.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied with carbonation being a little above average. Overall, it was a pretty solid fresh hop beer. The hops were bold, flavorful and fresh. Really cool to taste some fresh locally grown hops.
