Deep rich mahogany red pour with 1.5 fingers of light cream head. Heavy lace and light retention. Gorgeous color.

Nose is very sweet. More red ale than scotch, though. Get more candied cherries than the earthy peat and tea flavors I like in this style.

Flavor is too sweet as well. Again with the candied fruit. Thick syrup coats the tongue and throat. Peat is trying to sneak through all that sweetness, but this comes across more as a winter warmer than a scotch ale to me.

Feel is very thick and rich. Heavy syrup.

For the style, I think they missed on this one. Love the brewery, just not this beer.

Sweet, Warming, Hefty, Toasty

We’ve got a massive malt bomb here, very true to style with a hulking maltiness. The noticeable level of alcohol gets a little warm but is needed to help keep the maltiness in check, especially since the hopping was kept to a minimum (per style of course). A toasty, grainy finish with a mild lingering sweetness. Sometimes staying true to style and relying on subtle nuances can win a beer drinker over. Job well done.

A: Pours medium brown, in the glass it is a dark brown/black with a ruby red glow when held to the light. The head i tan with a decent amount of small frog eyes.

S: There is a nice flour and baked bread aroma ,with a slight smokey smell.

T: Bread and a little caramel at the front. The finish is bread and syrup with a slightly smokey finish.

M: Medium in body, with a very lively carbonation, making it feel a bit lighter that it is.

O: Overall a pretty tasty brew, perfect for a fall day.

A: Pours a clear, reddish copper color. Only about 1/2 finger of off-white head, but what there is stays around for a moderate amount of time. Carbonation sticks to the sides of the glass.

S: A hefty punch of crystal malts starts off the aroma. Complemented by toffee, burnt sugar, and a decent amount of alcohol. Not amazingly complex or vibrant, but a good solid aroma.

T: The flavor shines a bit more than the aroma. Lots of malts, caramel, alcoholic phenols and a nice pepperiness, a slight hop bitterness on the finish. I actually think they they overdid it a bit with the alcohol, to me it largely overpowers the more subtle flavors of the brew.

M: A rather toothsome brew. moderate carbonation, but feels almost chewy in the mouth, and coats the mouth quite effectively.

O: This is a nice beer for a winter night. Doing a full review now, I notice the flaws in the beer a bit more. That being said, this is the last beer of the 2nd 6-pack that I picked up. It's a solid beer, works just as well out of the bottle as out of the glass, and it'll warm you up.

12 oz bottle into a wine glass.

Appearance: Pours a dark ruby color. The head is one finger high, with a pale yellow shade. I love how soft the texture is, though it doesn't have the best retention. Splotches of lacing are left on the glass. (3.25)

Smell: Kind of weird. There is a large amount of caramel and stewed dark fruit befitting a typical wee heavy, but there's also a large yeast quotient to it. I'm wondering if it uses Belgian yeast - having said that, it's a very rudimentary presence, lacking in nuance. Actually, the nose of this is rudimentary and nuance-devoid in general. A shame, really. (2.75)

Taste: On the second sip, it hits me - it's a crystal malt bomb. Since this is designed to be malty, it doesn't bother me the way it would in an IPA. It opens up with caramel-laden flavors, before finishing with notes of toffee, bread, and earth. After a while, it becomes slightly smoky. I'm missing more definition from the taste to properly enjoy this, but it's ultimately far from awful. (2.75)

Mouthfeel: Full bodied and creamy, as it should be. Carbonation is slightly above average for the style, giving a bit more drinkability. It's fairly sticky, but not a total chore to drink (even with a less-than-stellar flavor profile). (3)

Overall: This is not Old Chub, that's for sure. It just seems too generic and nondescript in its flavor profile. Actually, it's my least favorite DB beer to date. (2.75)

2.8/5: Rather unimpressive, all told

Who wouldn't love this by name alone?! I was a wee bit leery of the moniker of Scottish ale...I wasn't really sure what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised. On first sip I tasted hints of black licorice and another sweetness that I could just cannot put my finger on...perhaps a true scotch-y flavor? Nonetheless I am savoring this pint, and sipping it slowly as this is not a quaff to be chugged.
