Deep rich mahogany red pour with 1.5 fingers of light cream head. Heavy lace and light retention. Gorgeous color.

Nose is very sweet. More red ale than scotch, though. Get more candied cherries than the earthy peat and tea flavors I like in this style.

Flavor is too sweet as well. Again with the candied fruit. Thick syrup coats the tongue and throat. Peat is trying to sneak through all that sweetness, but this comes across more as a winter warmer than a scotch ale to me.

Feel is very thick and rich. Heavy syrup.

For the style, I think they missed on this one. Love the brewery, just not this beer.

Who wouldn't love this by name alone?! I was a wee bit leery of the moniker of Scottish ale...I wasn't really sure what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised. On first sip I tasted hints of black licorice and another sweetness that I could just cannot put my finger on...perhaps a true scotch-y flavor? Nonetheless I am savoring this pint, and sipping it slowly as this is not a quaff to be chugged.

Nice dark amber color with a nice head - very little lacing. Rather strong flavor but not overwhelming. Roasted caramel notes with a slightly bitter (but not too bitter). Very nice mouthfeel. Overall a rather tasty beer. Will be buying this one again.

Poured from the bottle into a wee heavy ale glass.

An aggressive pour, brings a large frothy settling three finger tan and creamy head, fills the glass so nicely and settles slowly to a thick puck. The body color is an aggressive deep ruby garnet red, with a mix of cola and thin bubbles. The beer glows like a gem.

Nose is rather interesting. Thick sticky toffee malts and an array of interesting aromas. Cinnamon, soy sauce, black pepper and dense doughy barley in a way. Real fascinating if at time strange.

Light bodied palate with an interesting flavor. The malts don't seem to carry or provide a depth of toffee and thick sensing flavors. THere is a light bodied fruity sort of character to this with a hint of pepper like finish. Large pepper like aromatics on the finish that come on the swallow which is kind of jarring if not morbidly fascinating.

Overall it's also not quite boozy for the style, but the palate flavor is intriguing and enjoyable. Nice one to add to the Devils Backbone collection.

single, WF Alexandria

a: single bottle into a stubby cascade chalice, an off-white head falls back to a thin smattering across the surface, the beer itself a deep maple amber in color

s: malt heavy nose of toffee and brown sugar, sweet, a mild citrus rind hop aroma, dried fruits - raisin and apple in particular, nuts

m: carbonation light and prickly on the tongue, medium to full bodied with a sugary slickness

t: malty and quite sweet well into the finish, toffee, brown sugar, date and raisin sugars, well integrated alcohol, red apple, roasted nuts and toffee linger with sticky sugar on the pack of the palate, mild hop flavors and just a slightly acidic citrus peel bitter, sweet for my preference

o: a nicely malty scottish ale, alcohol only peeks out as it warms, not really complex but carries some good aromas and flavors

Pours a clear brown amber or almost iced tea color. Thumb sized tan head from an aggressive pour falls pretty quick no real lace.

Aroma is lots of caramel, hints of toffee some dark fruits and oaked booze notes. Some underlying earthiness peat like maybe a hint of vanilla, pretty standard Wee Heavy aromas.

Taste is like the nose lots of caramel and toffee, dark fruit hints. Some good boozy notes, vanilla hints, touches of oak and earthiness.

Mouthfeel is a solid medium with carbonation that is unassuming.

Overall not bad a wee heavy not the best but reasonably priced and quite drinkable, a big malty treat.
