Pours a bright clear gold with a one finger bright white head that fades quickly into a thin cap with moderate lacing.

Aroma of bready yeast with hints of spice.

Taste of bread, rye and a slight herbal hop bitter ending.

Light body with low carbonation, refreshing with a dry finish and a slight bitter after taste.

Overall a nice refreshing lighter beer, very nice.

A Roggen Pils according to the bottle label.Poured into a 1/2 liter stein a clear light to medium golden with a one finger white crown that lasted for quite awhile.Toasted bread and a light smattering of sharp rye and leafy hops in the nose, the toasted notes stand out most.a nice feel to the beer,it's fuller than what I expected.Flavors of toasted malts with a tinge honey and sharp rye that lingers in the finish,a nice shot of leafy hops in the finish.A damn fine lager with a rye twist,I could drink alot of these on a hot day.

Very decent lager, with some rye edge. Not very edgy, its a bit soda pop. Still some mild rye aroma. Medium mouthfeel, and some lasting head. Very good drinkability and refreshing. Suitability carbonated. Thanks for bringing back an extra bottle, Stephen.

Alehousedave provided this rarity at an impromptu Tuesday night tasting... Thanks buddy!! Cool chatting about things.

The brew is polished golden.. good white head with nice spotty lacing...

The nose is very balanced between lite pale/hints of caramal malts and equally lite citrus hoppiness.

The flavor mirrors the aromas but a distinct rye component jumps out... so does something that I associate with "corn"... not DMS... but corn... weird, but tasty.

Body is light with a good bubble.

Super glad I go the chance to try this one.... Thanks Dave!!

Wouldn't an anti-imperial lager just be a lager? But the anti-establishment folks at Devil's Backbone proclaim such wordiness through a spicy rye-infused lager that's crisp, refreshing, but a little earthy- making it a bit down and dirty.

Like many well-conceived lagers, this pours with the common straw coloration and standard lagered clarity. Its zesty carbonation fuels the stark white head that lingers above the beer. With sturdy and random lace, the look of the beer certainly fits the bill.

Grainy-sweet aromas are sharp, crisp, and spicy. Decorated with softer coriander and dried orange peel- the beer takes on perfumy Wit-like character. The faint sweet scent of baking bread and dough is slightly earthen with grass and straw notes but then there's a twinge of pepper that lurks beneath and gives this lager something intriguing. Along with the earthy rye- light apple sulfurs and floral hop notes swirl to buffer the rye and reaffirm German Lager roots.

Its part-grain, part-malt sweetness is crisp, quick, and dry. Cracker-like in its taste the beer quickly favors light malt starch and hops heading into middle palate. Mild apple and lemon zest character emit from spicy hop additions and bridge seamlessly into the husky taste of rye gain. The peppery taste of the adjunct grain assists the hops in its bitter balance and grips the late palate with sharp and grainy taste.

Medium-light on the palate, the firm lager uses its high carbonation to provide a light creaminess and lift to the beer- all allowing the beer to feel lighter than it tastes. A quick fade to dry, light airy, and mild minty warmth closes the beer with high refreshment.

Beggars & Thieves is a characterful and charismatic lager that explores it potential as well as the best of ales. This is certainly not a boring style if you treat it like Devil's Backbone.

A solid beer as I have never had a rye lager before

Pours a golden amber, with tinge of rust. Off white head, a bit soapy

aroma has some spice and toasted bread. Semi sweet, hints of caramel. Overall, light smell to it

Flavor is pretty well balanced between the spice, rye, breadiness, hop profile and sweetness. I can see this one being a decent summer/autumn beer.

Finishes semi sweet with touch of spice. Fades into a dryness on the end. Overall a solid beer

On draft at Churchkey in D.C.

The beer is radiant golden with a small head. Aromas of lager yeast, biscuits, a touch of herbal and floral hops. Abundant lager character in the flavor, with sourdough breads and an earthy aspect. Fruity esters and grain. Some similarities to a German pils. Pretty light in body with moderate carbonation. Good drinkability. Solid lager.
