Visted here on 2010-17-18 after hiking Sherando Lake in the George Washington National Forest

What a gorgeous setting in a valley surrounded by the devils backbone peaks of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It makes a great first impression as you drive into the spacious parking area and look over to the swiss-chalet style brew pub.

As I walked up to the front door I noticed an outside dining area and around the corner, a spot for smoker's to smoke and have a brew. I later learned they sell a couple of decent quality cigars at the bar.

The inside is nice with very high ceilings with large, manufactured wooden beams and rustic-modern ski lodge feel. There are a couple of seating areas and a very attractive bar area with the on-tap selection written on a chalk board. You can see the brewing tanks behind the bar.

I sat at the bar and chatted with the friendly bartender while having an Eight Point IPA and a Vienna Lager. I ordered their specialty grilled cheese sandwich with three cheeses and a very generous dollop of sweet chutney. It was delicious and very reasonably priced.

I'll take a few points off my review for no cell phone signal and no wifi. Other than that, I really enjoyed it here and will go back again.

Bartender lady was extremely rude. Beer is good though.

One of the nicer looking breweries in Virginia. The place has the feel of a large hunting log cabin. Lots of taxidermy and paintings on the walls with brewing equipment scattered around as well. A very eclectic mix that works. The place feels huge and open and is just a big win in the atmosphere category. Their beers range from experimental and tasty seasonals to their normal staple beers- most of which are pretty good too. I was only there for a quick sampling stop and didnt try the food so I won't comment on that.

That being said, here are the big complaints I have with this place. And they are big ones: the 3 staff members I interacted with were all either rude or seemed very disinterested in serving me or not at all interested in my overall impressions of the place.

And most important- no WIFI access for customers! Oh, they have WIFI because my phone saw it, but when I asked for a password the rude bartender stated it was for staff use only. I usually love rating beers and breweries while I'm enjoying their brews, but DB is in a cellular dead zone. No signal means no access to BA or Untappd while you're there. This is bad form, IMO for a large and popular brewery like DB. I hope they read these reviews and consider changing this policy.

Upon arrival in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, you find your way upon this upscaled lodge with a local feel. The beer list has their staple beers, as well as a few new ones they are trying. You can go for a goblet of your favorite higher gravity brew, or test a few different options. The downside to doing a beer flight is their limitations of two different types, and you can't mix and match; limitations on a tasters palate. The food is cooked and prepared in house, the old fashion smoked taste carries through all of their dishes, and is a must. They have a smoke platter that has been plenty for my husband and I (and more), on many occasions. On this smoke platter you get baked beans, corn hash, chicken, smoked turkey, bacon and a local sausage link. They put a disclaimer in their menu that you can not make any substitutions. I understand on the meats with more fuller portions, but there are a lot who do not care for sausage, taste, greasiness, and the casing on the outside. So to pay for something you won't eat and can not sub out, yet want to try all they have to offer, it is disappointing. Great view and place to visit for local brews and food. Do not recommend sitting at the bar, the bartender is a young lady who may know a lot about the beer, but has a poor customer service attitude, and is very short in her responses. This is one of my bigger complaints and given the time of day we visited (a beautiful warm summer day) we would hope for a personality that reflects the astounding local view and feel of the establishment, yet she reflected a damper, sour feel (one you might expect on a rainy depressing day). With that said, the beer is great, the food is fantastic (with large portions for the $), and well worth the visit!
