After enjoying several of Lift Bridge beers on tap over the past couple months, I saw this on the menu at The Happy Gnome & dove in. 16 oz. pour that probably had 13 oz. in the glass.

Big air-brushed head over a clear orange body. Smell isn't as hoppy as I might hope: citrus, but very sweet & malty, too. Oh no!

Hop Prop is indeed too malty for my taste, & the hops didn't agree either. First out of the gate was a massive soapy hop attack, bitter, but reminiscent of the Irish Spring my mother used to stick in my mouth for untimely utterances. A faint metallic taste crept in underneath, too. Bitter blast without much taste rounded it out, but that soapiness lingered far too long. Didn't have any problem getting through the 13 oz. glass, but didn't have the urge to have another, either.

Plain jane beer. Looking through the other reviews it seems like I might have had an old keg, or contaminated tap lines, or something, but this just wasn't up to Lift Bridge standards. If anyone else orders it I'll give it another sip, but wouldn't ask for a pint again.

UPDATE: Pretty sure my first of these was while Lift Bridge was still working out the kinks. Recently picked up a sixer to give it a second try, since the brewery generally puts out good stuff. This is much better. The metallica that fouled the on-tap is absent, & the soapiness is subdued...though still faintly present. And no chore to drink! Revising my score upwards from blah to a pretty good beer. (1,474 characters)

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Imperial Pint.

Appearance: Amber-orange with thin off-white head and spotty lacing.

Smell: Very mild and fairly standard. Some citrus, but more floral, earthy and spicy.

Taste: Fairly large malt backbone of caramel and toast. Mix of citrusy, floral and spicy hops. Well balanced and very tasty, but the mix of flavors means nothing really stand out. Somewhat bitter.

Feel: Medium-full body that is pretty smooth with relatively low carbonation. Fairly dry finish.

Overall: While this is definitely a good beer, IMO, it is not as great as recent, great hoppy MN beers from Summit (Saga), Indeed (Day Tripper), Brau Brothers (HopSession) and Steel Toe (Size 7), plus the "old" standby Furious. (736 characters)

L: brilliant gold to amber
S: Resiny citrus nose.
T: Starts malty and then goes through several hop permutations from fruity, resiny to piney citrus with lingering hop bitter. Dries out on the finish
F: Medium body and carbonation.
O: A decent beer that is nice to find on tap. (281 characters)

Poured from 12 oz. bottle into a Sam Adams "Perfect Pint" glass.

Appearance: Pours a deep copper amber orange with a lot of rising bubbles. Big four finger off white head with very good retention. Leaves a lot of lacing around the glass.

Smell: A grassy and citrus hop forward aroma that is fairly balanced by the malts. Grassy and earthy hops along with citrus orange, grapefruit, mango, and lemon. Floral with some hints of pine resin spice. A very noticeable malt presence with hints of sweet caramel, toffee, biscuit, and yeast. A pretty balanced overall aroma.

Taste: Like the smell previews, a mix of grassy and juicy hops with a solid balance of malts. Upfront is a taste of citrus orange, grapefruit, mango, and lemon. Earthy hops with a very grassy and floral taste. Also some spicy pine resin in the mix. Solid bready malt presence with notes of caramel, biscuit, toffee, and yeast. Hops and malts are pretty balanced here.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Fairly juicy and chewy. Has a fairly dry finish.

Overall: A pretty good IPA. Not quite in the West Coast style as there is more of a malt balance here. A pretty solid mix. (1,178 characters)
