Poured into a shaker pint glass.

Look: Deep deep copper color. Cream colored head with good retention. Light lines of lacing on the glass.

Aroma: Malts, bitter hops, and faint fruit like apricot.

Taste: Starts out sweet with a good malt presence with some spiciness. Gives way to bitter hops and grapefruit sourness. A nice fruity, floral apricot sweetness works it's way in the finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied.

Overall: A very tasty, solid IPA. I like it a lot.

12oz can poured into a pint glass.

Pours a deep dark slightly hazy amber/red with a nice thick and creamy head. Nose is very aromatic and sweet with some complex floral/bitter hop bite to it.

Mouthfeel is nice and full without being overwhelming. Has a nice bitterness that comes on a bit late and finishes dry and quick. The bitterness isn't that in your face, as others have said here it's not much of an IPA as it is a hoppy pale ale. It's a solid beer though!

Pours a Redish color with thick pillowy head.

BIG Aroma with caramel maltyness, citrus, pine, even some nuttyness. HUGE aroma but not overly hoppy.

Taste is sweet with nice balance of hops but nothing over bearing, definately not a hop bomb. More of a classic IPA and even a bit maltier than most. Nicely balanced in my book.

Mouthfeel is warming but don't really notice the alcohol. Thick and creamy and goes down without too much bite in the finish. Again this is not a big hoppy beer.

Overall I really like this version of an IPA, definately on the sweet end and not what you look for if you want a very hoppy IPA. If you can find it Try it, I live in the Denver area and happy to see a lot more micro's popping up with great beer. (and I love cans)

can into a pint

A - Pours a very opaque, dark brown color. Head formation is off white in color. Does not appear hazy. Not overly carbonated.

S - Strong chewy hops, very grapefruit, grassy. Super floral.

T - Starts off with some caramel, toasted toffee malts. Mid-stream gets more bitter, but remains very balanced. Good american hops, lightly floral. Finishes with a caramel malty sweetness, tied well to some hopping. Very complex.

M - Thick and creamy mouthfeel. Sticky caramel sugar cling. Carbonation is well hidden. Finishes with some hop resins on the tongue.

D - Good drinkability for an IPA. Not overly filling, although all the sugars fill the stomach at times. ABV is up there, sneaky - but well hidden.

An interesting IPA - big time use of crystal/caramel malts, which doesn't really fit the style.

I shyed away from this one for a while due to the generally lackluster reviews, but after enjoying their Belgian-style offering recently, I decided to give this one a go. Comes in Upslope's fairly unimaginatively-decorated cans, which look like some kind of diet soda. Pours an unexpected brown amber, with a shallow head. It has a spicy, jammy nose with some notes of citrus. Taste is definitely well-balanced; not a super-bitter all-hops IPA, but not all malt, either. It's somewhere in the middle, and the middle's pretty good. I was actually suprised by how much malt-caramel gets through, and there is even a bit of a roasted character to it. The mouthfeel is medium-bodied, and overall I like it quite a bit. Almost drinks like a DIPA. I'll get it again.

Rich garnet color with a nice lacing. taste is rich with malt and hops. Hint of cereal grains with a touch of malty sweetness to counter balance the bitterness.
Crip dry finish with a hint of lingering cling dankess from the hops. Leaves a slight warming on the palate.

Great color if you pour it out of the can, but hey...half of the novelty of this beer is the can! I'm a fan of canned craft brews, and I finally knew I had support in this endeavor when I noticed (i.e. "caught") Colin Meloy of the Decemberists with a few cans of this excellent brew onstage at the Ogden Theatre, Denver in March, 2011. Anyhow, this beer has a great balance of smooth malt with medium hop kick, but great caramel and spice to balance.

I met one of the brewers at an event in Denver, and this is another example of a hard-working group putting themselves out there to make great craft brew (in a can!). Give it a shot, then try it again, as this is a beer that will grow on you. Much better than the pale ale IMO.

Presentation: Same as the Pale, 12 oz can - blue instead of the red used on the pale. Described as bold, deep, bitter. Same ingredients too, includin the patagonian hops and snowmelt.

Appearance: Deep red color, large head tan in color, good retention and lacing.

Smell: Some fruity hops, a bit of a spicy aroma I can't identify. Almost like anise, but that isn't quite right. Underlying malt sweetness.

Taste: Smooth mouthfeel, actually a bit less bitterness than I expected, when they say on the can Bitter. Highly drinkable with some interesting hop and malt flavors.

Overall impression: For a new brewery, I was pretty impressed with both of the offerings I found in cans. This is a drinkable beer with plenty of flavor.

Review from BeerAdvocate Magazine Issue #41 (Jun 2010):

Hard pour serves up a thick head; hazed, brownish-amber color. Smells of wildflowers, apples, pears and toasted bread. So smooth and creamy, it raises the bar for canned beer. Big maltiness, sweet with caramel and bread flavors throughout. Alcohol is clean and warming. Hops make sure we didn't forget this is an IPA by dropping a blanket of bitterness and a trail of citric, mint and faint tobacco. Balance + IPA = this beer, so don't expect a hop bomb.

Pours a clear, copper color with a tight, white that leaves chunks of lacing.

Smells of earthy and floral hops with some pine on the backend with some toasted notes.

Tastes of the floral and earthy hops with a fairly big malt backbone. Malts lead off with toasted notes leading to some caramel sweetness and syrupy notes. This leads into a bit of citrus and pine, but then bigger earthy and floral notes come in. Leans toward the sweet side and finishes that way.

Mouthfeel is medium with a crisp amount of carbonation.

Overall, this is a good IPA, however, it is malt heavy for the style.

Poured into a SlyFox pint glass.

Pours a deep copper color with a light tan head. Head drops fairly quickly leaving only a thin wisp of foam.

Aromas of sweet malt, and citrusy hops.

First sip apes aroma, sweet malt backbone with a good balance of a firm bitterness with citrusy hops. Good bitterness and grapefruit on the finish.

Mouthfeel is a little thin, but not watery. Firm bitterness just barely creates a slight puckering. No astringency.

Overall a very nice, straightforward American IPA. Nothing too brutal about it. Could easily put down a couple three four of these after a long day.
