12oz can. Pours a medium brown with a small creamy white head that goes to a thin film that leaves some lacing.

The aroma is sweet nutty chocolate malts.

The flavor is sweet nutty chocolate malts that are a bit acidic. There's a bit of bitter roast in the finish with some off plasticky notes. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with smooth carbonation.

Overall, an OK brown.

Dark brown in color with minimal light penetration. A bit over half an inch of small bubbles form a tightly knit beige head. Heavy Brussels lacing. I smell chocolate and caramel notes. The flavor is primary caramel with some chocolate and toffee notes. The body is creamy and smooth. Drink by date was back on 12/7/14.

Poured from can to Brooklyn tulip. Noticing Upslope cans aren't terribly carbonated, even an aggressive pour won't overflow the glass. Pours a transparent brown rainwater color. Not much head or lacing. Decent enough looking brown ale. Smell- fresh coffee beans. Smells like I stuck my head into a fresh pot of coffee. Toffee, caramel. Nice aromatics to this one, I don't think its brewed with coffee at all, but it really comes out in the malt. Taste- oh yeah. roasty bitterness. coffee, toffee candy. Loving the coffee presence here. Not really sweet, this is highly drinkable and an interesting example of the style.

16oz pint at the Glass Half Full taphouse in advance of night two of the Beer Diaries Colorado premiere.

This beer appears a clear dark russet brown hue, which leaves a streaks of island arch lace around the glass as it slowly ebbs away.

It smells of robust dark chocolate and oily nuts, a grainy caramel malt, some soft char, a touch of citrus pith, and earthy, leafy hops. The taste is more malty up front, before a clavacade of bittersweet cocoa and mixed nuts comes crashing down, a mild roast waft about, and some tamed leafy, weedy hops balance things out.

The bubbles are fairly understated, the body a heady medium-heavy weight, and decidedly smooth, with a pleasantly subtle creaminess. It finishes off-dry, the expected sweetness readily tempered by a lingering earthy hoppiness.

A rather enjoyable, and surely drinkable Americanized brown ale - not overhopped, but instead beefed-up in the mouthfeel area. Worthy of at least a round or two.

My regular complaint with brown ales is the pairing of a big, thick body with a plain, generically roasty character. This beer does exactly what I want: It finishes dry, the body isn't too thick, and there's a long cocoa and coffee bean and deeply toasted barley. It's big flavor and easy to drink for the strength. I'll have another.

One and a half fingers of tan head on brown, amber ting'd colored body.
The aroma is a nice nutty and malt smell. Really nice.
The taste is nutty and malty as well. A solid profile.
Smooth texture with low carbonation and medium body.
A drinkable brown ale and tasty too.

Yet another canned beer provided by the
(in)famous woodychandler. Poured from a 12 oz. can. Has a pretty dark brown color with amber hues and a 1/2 inch head. Smell is malts, nutty, caramel. Taste is good, malts, caramel, nuts, a touch of hops is present, very flavorful. Feels full bodied in the mouth and overall this is a high quality brew worth seeking out.

A- Solid brown with a substantial brown head which is thick and creamy, leaves light lacing on the glass

S- Strong notes of caramel, light chocolate and malt sweetness

T- Light bitterness throughout, roasted flavors and cocoa sweetness, slight warming, a light bit of dryness on the finish

M- Almost no carbonation, heavy and smooth, almost heading into porter territory but good

O- Kind of straddles the line between a brown and a porter in my mind, very enjoyable, would definitely have again

Clear brown colored ale with a medium sized light brown colored head.

Smells of molasses and patent malt with a good coffee and chocolate aroma too.

Starts out fairly sweet with a good roasted barley and chocolate flavor. Medium level of bitterness. Molasses becomes a little stronger as you drink it. The taste is similar to a mocha coffee sweetened with black strap molasses. Not a lot of fine nuances come with this beer it is just a very solid brown ale.

Mouthfeel is good.

Overall a tasty and surprisingly easy to drink Brown Ale. This beer has no defects.and makes an excellent example of the style for reference.

App: Dark brown with slight reddish hues towards the extremities. Nice two finger head that dissipates quickly overall leaving considerable lacing and decent overall retention.
Smell: Meat like roasted character, not unlike turkey. A little strange and exciting. Woody and roasty, but not smokey. Savory herb like nose. Ale esters missing.
Taste: Porter like roasted flavors at first but falls off more quickly than a porter. Almost like a half porter. Coffee like characteristics, slight hop bitterness but well counterbalanced by the sweet malt flavors. Pretty good for a brown. Full disclosure though, I am not historically a fan of browns.
Mouth: Medium to medium-thin body. Light carbonation. Easily drinkable.

Poured into a standard pint glass.

The beer is a dead-as-leaves muddy water brown. Autumn, anyone? A vanilla head recedes to a fine film with spotty lacing.

Smells rich, roasted, of meats, and nuts, and brown sugar.

The taste is slightly roasted and maybe burnt, but in a toasty way. Rich glazed caramelized sugar over roasted beef brisket, with a faint tangy hop finish.

Mouthfeel is bright, carbonated slightly, and a touch of alcohol.

Overall, just a delightful brown ale on a mid-august day. Really has a nice body to it.

From the CAN: "Hand-Crafted Beer"; "Roasted, Malty, Aromatic"; "Ingredients Snowmelt Malt English Hops American Yeast Brown Sugar"; "Specs Hand-Crafted Aluminum Can Portable Recyclable Good".

Man, but the Crack & Glug was phenomenal resulting in two fingers of light-tan head with good retention. Color was a deep dark-brown with ruby highlights. Nose smelled of evergreen and cocoa and I may have just been inspired for some hot chocolate this winter. I used to love peppermint schnapps in my hot chocolate and I have not done that in years. Mouthfeel was thick and viscous and I'll be damned if that taste was not just like the cocoa I mentioned a moment ago! Minty chocolate. This must be a panty peeler of some stripe, I would imagine. Finish was literally breathtaking with its intense mintiness up front, followed by a soothing wash of chocolate. How many of these do I have left?

First had: on tap at Mayor of Old Town, Ft. Collins, CO

Poured a pleasant mahogany with a thin off-white head. Toasty brown malts and brown sugar sweetness in the aroma. More of the same in the taste, with lots of sweetness, brown sugar and molasses, some cocoa notes, and little to no hops to speak of. I don't like many brown ales, but I did like this one. Medium-bodied, and nicely drinkable.

Appearance: dark brown bodied beer with 2 full fingers of khaki colored head.

Smell: Roasty and toasty; sweet and nutty malts. A nice smell of bowl of brown sugar oatmeal. Light earthy hop. Slightly fruity.

Taste: A sweet malt forward brown ale with a hint of brown sugar; this is a seriously delicous brown ale! Malts are nutty, roasty, and toasty. Light earthy hops just like in the nose that helps keep the sweetness in balance.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied beer with almost moderate carbonation levels. This beer has such a creamy mouthfeel giving the beer a substantial full bodied feel. While the beer is super smooth and as drinkable as water. This has the best mouthfeel of any brown ale that I can ever remember sampling.

Overall: This is quite a gem from Upslope. I wish this beer was a local beer in my distro area because I would always have a fresh six pack of this beer in my fridge as an "anytime" beer. Upslope also wins bonus points for packaging this beer in a can. This beer screams a "Colorado original" to me.

I like the simple and easy going cans
Pours a medium brown, red hues when held to the light. Massive soft and tight tan bubbles of head. Great lacing, good start.

Aromas of heavy malt, brown bread, hints of mild chocolate, pumpernickel bread. Deep scent of a real deal brown.

Taste starts light and watery, heads towards slightly roasted and grainy husk ville. Bits of toffee and dark wheat bread. Slight earthy hop bitterness at the beginning. A bit astringent at the end. Hop bitterness lingers a bit, kind of leafy.

Mouthfeel is lower part of medium bodied. No alcohol present and highly drinkable.

A pretty good brown, but the small odd almost plasticky astringency is a bit off putting.

Poured into a snifter. No freshness date.

Pours forming a finger of light latte-colored head over a dark brown opaque body.

Smells very lightly of caramel, toasted marshmallows, and lightly roasted malts.

The flavor packs much more depth and weight than the aroma did. Big malts with a caramel (almost chocolaty) sweetness balanced by noticeable but not intrusive hops. The flavor is not strikingly deep or complex, but has a pleasing simplicity and displays bold basic flavors that come off clean and well crafted. There is an awesome light-coffee dry acidity flavor that is quite pleasing and doesn't become apparent until well into the glass...

The mouthfeel is creamy and full due to a surprisingly low carbonation (I was struck at the dull sound the can made when I popped it open). I love lower carbonation levels and thus this beer hits very close to the bulls-eye concerning feel (for my personal tastes).

Conclusion: This is a solid brown ale that I would be proud of brewing if it came from my home brewery. It is not something I would go out of my way to track down again, but if it was served at my local pub I would revisit it often and regard it as a solid standby. This is my first Upslope beer and I am not disappointed.

Had this at the Colorado Rare Beer Tasting at the Rackhouse Pub on 9/28.

I was completely unfamiliar with Upslope and so went into this with zero expectations. Their rep walked out of the tasting room for 20 min at a time so when I was at a loss of what to sample I nabbed a whole can of the stuff.

Pours dark but clear. Otherwise nothing very notable.

Smells nutty and dark. This is welcoming as far as I'm concerned in an American brown.

The flavor was a little off to me though. It begins nicely enough with a bit of roast and honeyed malt. But then the roast grew and grew into some strong ashiness. This became detracting and out of place for a brown ale.

Crisp and medium bodied.

Overall this is out of style... it's a beer that wants to be a porter but is being forced to be a brown ale instead (not unlike a left-handed school child being forced to use his right hand at all costs).

Saw this one and had to grab a sixer. I know upslope is a fine brewery, so taking a chance on a sixer wasn't even a concern as I knew it would be good.

And it was. This brown ale embodies the style perfectly. Coffee, chocolate, and caramel malts all in nice proportions, without being overwhelming or transforming this beer into a stout. The perfect mix between flavor and fullness, combined with ease of drinking and refreshingness.

Upslope is certainly going places, and this brew is just one more step from their currently fine standing towards the halls of beerdom.

Pours a clear, dark brown color. 2/3 inch head of an off-white color. Great retention and great lacing. Smells of strong roasted malt, sweet malt, hops, slight yeast, and a hint of alcohol. Fits the style of an American Brown Ale. Mouth feel is sharp and clean, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of sweet malt, caramel malt, hops, strong roasted malt, slight yeast, and slight alcohol. Overall, good appearance, decent aroma, good body, and blend.

Poured aggressively from a can into a pint. Served around 40 °F.

A: 3f lunmpy head atop clear, brown beer. thick foam. as i drink, tufts of fat sticky lacing cling to the glass and dangle foam tenticles into the beer.

S: sweet honey, dms, and caramel malt. as it warms, the dms overwhelms the flavor profile, but right out of the fridge, there's virtually no smell.

T: sweet, light brown. light, sugary, and watery. like kool aid. slight earthiness to offset some of the sweetness. some roastiness, salted pecan, and the faintest hint of alcohol in the finish.

M: light bodied, smooth, with just a slight hint of stickiness and tartness.

D: i accidentally drank the whole pint before i finished the review, but i'd wager the sugariness would kick in about halfway through a third can, like with blue moon and other beers this sweet, and leave me so full and bloated that it would turn me off to this beer permanently. that, of course, is speculation, but i'd be shocked if it weren't the case.

i think my drinkability comment sums this one up. it's an easy drinker, and could be good for someone who is looking to explore non-macro beers for the first time. it's good for a sweet brown, but for me, this beer is too sugary to be really enjoyable.

This brew was served from cans into generic pints. It showed an auburn coloring, letting up more shimmering hues or ruby when held directly to light. A one and a half finger tall head of crème brûlée colored foam topped the liquid. This showed nice retention into quilted patterned lace around our glasses. No haze or sediment was noted, and carbonation appeared to be lighter. The aroma wafted simply, taking form from brown and amber malts, sourdough bready dough, metallic yeast and nickel, vanilla, hazelnut sweetness, cheddar cheese mustiness, burnt brown sugars, browned plantains, dusty leathers, lime soda, and faint molasses stickiness. The flavoring to follow included big roasty brown and deeper chocolate malts, Cocoa Puff cereal graininess and chocolate dustiness, lactic acidity, smoldering campfire charcoal, tinny yeastiness, black cherry skins, willow bark bitterness, light marmalade sweetness, light soapy hop, green tobacco leaf, and iced chamomile tea. The body was medium, and the carbonation was high and tight, although the former thinned out a bit as the beer warmed up. The feel was otherwise more oily and slick, than creamy or frothy. Atop this was decent slurp and smack, with the mouth left wet, and the slightest bit dusted. The abv was appropriate, and the beer was easy to put away.

Overall, this beer was enjoyed amongst friends on our second night visiting them in Tempe, Arizona. What a welcomed recuperation it was following our nearly thirty hour drive. Actually, this was the first beer we got a chance to rate during this trip. We do wish that it would have been a local Arizona offering, but we were in such a hurry to get the festivities started, we grabbed damn near the first thing we came across. Well, this and some Modus Hoperandi, which served as a good back and forth paring for a simple, clean brown ale such as this one. The most surprising thing about it was the flavoring, which showed a heavy backbone of roast and smoke throughout it. Very nice. This wasn’t overwhelming in any sense though, as it was enjoyed by all, even our friends newest to the craft beer scene.

Appearance: Pours with a brown color, go figure. Finger worth of head that settles in but is present while drinking. Active carbonation is right for the style.

Smell: Pretty subdued overall. Cane sugar sweetness on the front. Light roasted coffee with some sweeter tones of caramel and molasses as a compliment. Mossy hops and oak round out the aroma.

Taste: Balanced, fitting roasted malts with potent coffee grounds greet the palate. A pleasant caramelized sugary body balances out a pretty heavy front. Balanced notes from both join force to create a finish with roasted coffee accents and dark, mature malts.

Mouthfeel: Pleasant transitions from roasted and dry, to sweet, to a pleasant combination on the finish. Carbonation is low but plays well in this beer.

Overall: This is a very tasty and interesting representation of the style. Has the nice dark roasted notes of a stout while providing the drinkability and sweeter notes of a brown ale.

This isn't your father's Brown Ale, especially if your dad is English. This beer foregoes any element of finesse to prefer aggressive American attitude. Its high hop ranges favor citrus character over broad bitter spice. Its body is malty-dry with a bit of heat. Its toasty chocolate tones rival that of Porters. Yet the beer somehow decries all-thing-brown.

Starting with its masculine crimson pour, its somewhat ruby-like with chestnut highlights- all is easily taken with the beer's brilliantly clear body. Somehow, its filtered character leaves its foam structure intact. Lacy rings cling to the glass at every sip taken from the glass.

Heavy toast kicks off the beer's aromatics, but does so with the backing of earthy chicory, cocoa beans, coffee, walnut, and tangy yogurt. Shy of roast, burnt or char character- the beer flirts with the line that separated this Brown from Stout. Earthen wood and pine notes balance and nearly overtake the aromas as the beer warms; bringing about accessory notes of citrus and grass.

It's bold yet crisp taste starts with the malty-sweet underpinnings of burnt sugar and bittersweet chocolate and then into bold roast coffee and earthy walnut oils. These bold tastes reach their apex at middle palate and that's where the hops kick in. Then come the citrus taste of grapefruit pith and peel, fresh cut grasses, torn pine needles, and singed woods. And yet there's the underlying malt taste of whipping cream that gives the beer a milky taste to support the chocolate and sweetness early and balances the hops late.

Creamy and medium-full early, the beer makes quick work of its heft and sheds its carbonation and residual sweetness soon after the malty taste registers. Then the beer favors dry toast textures, hop dryness, strong alcohol warmth, and mild acrid roast astringency. It goes from creamy to dry in a hurry.

I'm not going to say that this is the next Dogfish India Brown Ale, but it's not far off the course. Its a wonderful Americanized Brown Ale that can claim Porter-like character if it wanted to. I can see a pairing of a cajun-style burger with pepper jack cheese and jalapenos in the future with this beer as a complement.

A - 4.0 - Nice really dark brown almost black color, but at the edges you can see through a nice brown/mahogany type of color. Nice finger head that leaves okay lacing.
S - 4.25 - coffee, roastiness, wheat, bread, chocolate.
T - 4.25 - roasted coffee beans, toast, bread, chocolate, it has a nice creamy smoothness about it that makes it great. Definitely getting some nutty flavors too.
M - 4.25 - medium mouthfeel with nicely covered alcohol, and a roasted coffee aftertaste that's great.
O - 4.25 - Pretty outstanding beer.
