On tap at Lowry Beer Garden, Denver.
Pours a gold-straw yellow with minimal head in a pint glass.
Aroma of light malts, slight sweetness.
Moderate carbonation and mouthfeel.
Flavors of grassy hops, minerals, light caramel....crisp, refreshing but also a touch of bitterness in the initial bite through the finish.

12oz can, another unassuming offering scooped up in the great grocery store, GABF-adjacent run of 2014.

This beer pours a clear, bright pale golden yellow hue, with a teeming tower of puffy, loosely foamy, and rocky bone-white head, which leaves some well spread out chunks of wayward island lace around the glass as things sink away.

It smells of sharply biscuity and crackery pale malt, sedate lemon rind fruity notes, the suggestion of mild gasohol astringencies, and earthy, leafy, and duly grassy hops. The taste is bready, lightly doughy, and somewhat biscuity pale malt, the ghost of the caramel sweetness that never was, a touch of innocuous dead yeast, well-aged Riesling heat, and slowly doled-out leafy, grassy, and reap-worthy hay-like hops.

The bubbles are pretty sedate, but more than capable of fulfilling their quotidian support duties, the body a so-so middleweight, and tentatively smooth, the indecisive hops yet to determine what I feel right about now. It finishes a tad off-dry, the typical Czech Pils essences just too distracting by this point.

Wow - I guess I shouldn't be all that surprised that this brewery could spit out such a heady ode to the best Bohemian pilseners out there - they surely do. Perhaps I should have known this from the outset, given their basic, but still engaging ingredient list: Snowmelt, Malt, Czech Saaz Hops, and Lager Yeast. A recipe for success, if I've ever seen one.

This is what a "regular" beer should taste like. It's simple and relatively light, but unlike typical American fuzzy yellow water, it's got body and heft. My favorite lager.

From BeerAdvocate magazine Issue #65 (June 2012):

LOOK: Clear straw yellow, thin head

SMELL: Biscuity, bread crust, faintly floral, nutty, clean

TASTE: Crisp, lighter body; doughy, faint sweetness, biscuity, dried grass, balanced bitterness, herbal; clean, dry finish

Awesome to see another craft brewer go wild and brew an American lager, and Upslope went right for it. The retro flavor is there, and it drinks very easy. The only missing factor is that it does not come in the tallboy format. Not a problem knocking a few of these back.

Pours a golden bright color. Nice head produced from vigorous pour. Light Czech Saaz hops on the nose. Very refreshing taste that goes down easy. At 4.8% abv this will be my new summer beer. I love that Upslope has expanded their portfolio with an awesome lager.

This beer commits to being a tasty all-malt American pilsner. There's a rich, lightly-toasted barley flavor with just a hint of spicy hops. I'd still like a touch more bitterness, but it's like a more flavorful Session Lager from Full Sail.

This brewery seems determined to present itself as a craft brewer without formulating anything interesting or 'good' in its nominal attempts at different styles.

This particular beer is like a sad knock-off of Avery's Joe's Pilsner, which in itself is less than perfect.

All Upslope beers suffer from lackluster carbonation- each sip lands dead on my palette. This lager needs to be dryer and present a bigger head, to start.

Again and again I wonder if these smaller brewers are starting with some target references - Urquell, Paulaner, Asahi?

No way this is worth $9 a six pack.

Cheers.

From 12 oz. can to a tulip glass.
Clear gold in color.
Smells of corn and malt, grainy.
Tastes great. Grainy, corny, yeasty. Faint sweetness.
Great carbonation. Crispy, dry. Smooth.
Love this beer. Will be in my fridge.
