APPEARANCE: Stark black. No light penetrates even when held up to the light. I have only seen this in a few beers, one of which was Goose Island Bourbon County Stout. The head is a quarter-inch and slightly off-white, but whiter and thicker than most stouts, it dissipates quickly though, leaving a thin film covering about 60% of the surface of the beer in the middle. No lacing at all.

SMELL: The aroma has a pleasant and mild roastiness along with some dark chocolate and a touch of wood.

TASTE: This is a bitter stout. The roastiness from the nose carries over into some very smoky flavors and some coffee notes add to the bitterness. Dark chocolate tows the line between adding more bitter flavor and balancing with a touch of sweetness while a pleasant woodiness pulls all the way through each sip. The finish has an acidic and citrusy kick that remains on the palate through the aftertaste.

MOUTHFEEL: A nice sparkle up front slowly fades into a tickle. It is a little thinner than I would like for a stout, but on the plus side, the lighter body allows this to at least feel a lot more sessionable than its 6.9%.

OVERALL: This is a pretty solid and easily drinkable stout. It is a nice change of pace for a hop head that loves bitterness even though it doesn’t have the traditional hop bitterness.

Dark brown, letting a fair amount of light pass around the edges. The head and carbonation looked very active.

Some nice aromas coming through. Sarsaparilla, light chocolate, and char. I'm also picking up a faint smoke.

I know this beer has no mention of being smoked, but I'll be damned if I'm not picking up campfire in mine. The roast comes through heavily in the flavor.

Body is thin and carbonation is higher than I prefer in a stout, but somehow seems to fit this one.

It's not a knock-your-socks off stout, but is definitely a user-friendly stout and very drinkable. It comes with a robust flavor but isn't a big boozy carbohydrate packed stout (that I enjoy very much.) I respect that.

Can poured into glass. Pours black with tan head that retains nicely. The nose starts with some fruity notes, mainly raisins. This is paired with chocolate, roasted malt, and a bit of creaminess. The taste is fruit forward again with notes of raisin dominating. This gives way to a tangy metallic character that isn't working for me. Some roast appears up front but is ultimately drowned out by fruit and metallic notes. Mouthfeel is light for style with appropriate level of carbonation. Overall, this one just isn't working for me.

From BeerAdvocate magazine Issue #65 (June 2012):

Very luscious and damn tasty. The balance is there, you just have to see the beer through. Just because a Stout does not have a port-like level of alcohol and 100-plus IBUs does not mean it can’t make some noise. This beer makes us happy.

LOOK: Black, opaque, beautiful lacing

SMELL: Sweet, mocha, soft char, burnt sugar, roasted grain

TASTE: Silky smooth, creamy body, sweetness up front, coffee, unsweetened chocolate, brown malt, soft charcoal, burnt raisins, black currants, faint licorice root, drying sooty finish
