Pours ebony with 3 fingers of mocha colored head. Good lacing & average head retention

S: Cocoa, dark fruit

T: Dark fruit, cocoa & roastyness up front. Dryness, pears, plums, just a bit of iron as this warms, a little bit of fig as well. Finishes dry with dark fruit & just little bit of lactic sourness & leafy hops

MF: Medium bodied, slight carbonation

Pretty much to style, but nothing too exotic or exciting here

Poured from a 12oz can into a goblet. Best by date still 6 weeks out.

Pours a dark brown liquid forming a black and attractive body under a thick dark tan head.

Smells of decent roast- chicory, burnt toast, black malt, and a hint of chocolate. A light passing hint of hops makes an appearance. A slight touch of the almost fruity acrid notes that make Guinness Foreign Extra so special. Not as hopped in the aroma as that beer.

The flavor centers around rather big and very darkly roast malt. This takes the form a nearly charred bread (in a good way, like the edges of a toasted English muffin) a bit of coffee bitterness, a brief showing of hop influence, and a clean malty finish. Not much of an aftertaste, which actually works well.

Medium bodied with lower carbonation. I think this works well.

Conclusion: A very good dark beer. I have always liked this style, but often found American versions to be uninspired. I personally think the Guiness Foreign Extra to be an outstanding beer and the benchmark for the style, and although this is beer isn't quite at that level, it is doing its own thing and doing it well. Worth being proud of for Upslope. I could drink this regularly.

L: Very dark with orange to brown lacing. 1 finger off-white head
S: Notes of chocolate, but a little bit sharper, perhaps a sort of black licorice twang.
T: Good flavors but not well balanced. Tastes like most stouts but after-taste comes abruptly.
M: Carbonation definitely helps to blend these flavors together.
O: It's alright, I don't know if I'd drink it again because I favor Left hands fade to black, but I was craving a stout and it satisfied my craving.

Can at Old Chicago.

Pours a black colour with a small off white head of foam.

Things got weird. ..I get no roasted malt, maybe a hint or 2 of chocolate, but the smell I get the most is a fruity tartness.

Tastes like it smells, complete with that fruity tartness.

Good mouthfeel.

I read a few reviews after drinking this limited Upslope brew and didn't see a mention of any tartness. Doesn't fit the style anyways. Infection?

Edit: yep, it is referred to so I guess this is what the brewer intended.
