Poured from a .33L bottle into a pint glass. Bottle has a white label with a gold star and states that the beer is brewed with raisins. This is my first beer from this local brewery in Stavanger.
Pours a orange/brown color with about one finger of white head that slowly simmers down. Beer is a bit cloudy. Looks to be moderately carbonated. Leaves some decent lacing patterns on the glass. The smell definitely reveals an aroma of raisins, some sweet malt, maybe a bit of caramel or toffee?
The taste closely mirrors the nose on this winter ale. Very pleasing warming quality. Raisins up front complemented by a slightly sweet molasses/brown sugar malt flavor with some caramel. Some hints of winter fruit towards the end--pear, candied apple. With the ABV clocking in at 8.3, there is a slight booziness on the finish, but not at all out of place for the style. Contributes to the warming effect.
Mouthfeel is just about on target for the style. Not at all overly carbonated. Relatively smooth, but enough carbonation to pair with some cheeses or other hearty foods. Overall assessment is I'm pleasantly surprised by this local find. Pretty good value when price is factored in. I will have to visit the brewery. A beer I could drink a couple of and enjoy.
