They have made drastic improvements to their craft/micro section over the years. It has been expanded for starters, probably the largest craft beer selection in the area and if there is something that you want but they dont carry it they are usually happy to get it for you. I was looking for some different Oktoberfest's than what they had so they ordered them for me. They also do a good job of rotating their cold micro selection so week to week you have some different choices. Ill stop in to grab a cold 6pk after work and see something new in the cooler and try it. A couple of the employees are micro fanatics so they can be very helpful when trying to make a selection. The only place I go for my beer!

I was running an errand in the Stoughton area today, and made a stop into SDL to check it out. An average looking liquor store. Neatly organized though. One row of bombers and six packs, plus two wall coolers of cold beer. Mostly American beers, with some German and Belgian beers sprinkled in. Decent selection though, and I will give this store higher-than-usual marks in that category due to the fact it beats most stores in the immediate vicinity. Just about all the local craft breweries are represented here, plus most of the big named national craft brewers. Not going to find any gems here, but there are respectable choices. I picked up a bottle of Lindemans Gueuze Cuvée René because I have never had it. Prices were mostly reasonable, and I got service with a smile at the register. Worth a visit if you happen to be driving by.

Update: Just stopped in to pick-up some Unibroue, SIGNIFICANT price increases made. Fin du Monde was around $10 a 4-pack, now $11.49, etc. No real values to be found at all anymore.

Sad, as I guess they couldn't make money before but since I can find everything else cheaper (or same elsewhere), I won't be going back.

---

This store continues to improve in selection and represents some of the best values in the area (definitely better than the Cobb's Corner stores on a $ for $ comparison).

Good selection for a medium sized store, Some Belgians, excellent Unibroue selection, very good American Crafts (Founders, etc.), and also adding solid Bavarian Beers like Weihenstephaner.

It's a good idea to help this store out with business so his inventory will move and he can keep his prices low, this can be a tough area for craft brew sellers, so the more business we can give him the better.

Rob is the beer buyer and he's on BA as well as uses the BA Top 100 as a basic guide for beers to try. He's also helpful with case purchases.

Definitely best value for the area.

Update-Feb 5 2014. Here is a conversation I had with the proprietor 2 days ago.

Me: I’m becoming increasingly frustrated trying to find a fresh IPA in your store.

Proprietor: Hahaha. (clearly not getting it, so I paused to let it sink in. Then…) What do you mean by fresh?

Me: I mean one that is less than 3 or 4 months old. This (Flower Power, with a 12/10 bottling date) is the only one I can find. You have some IPAs on the shelf that were bottled in July!

Proprietor: Well, 3 of 4 months isn’t bad for those beers.

Me: On the contrary, for IPAs it’s terrible.

Proprietor: Well, they send ‘em to me that way.

Me: Well then shame on them for sending you old beer and perhaps, going forward, you should consider not accepting old stock.

Proprietor: Well, I either accept what they send me or I don’t carry them at all. Would you prefer that?

Me: What I would prefer is to come here and find fresh beer rather than drive to an out-of-town store to buy it. I’d rather give the local guy the business but I won’t buy 5-6 month old IPAs.

Proprietor: Well, then you should buy Sam Adams. I get that fresh every week.

Me: They make two IPA’s, neither of which is all that great. And, as far as I can see, you have never carried either in 6 packs

Proprietor: (Silent, looks confused. I’m now not even sure he knows what an IPA is.)

Sadly, I’m forced to lower my rating of this establishment.

EDIT 11-10-10. Selection is stagnant. They still have Maharajah from June 2009 on the shelf-at full price. Most disappointing.

I have to give this place some credit as they have come a long way in the last year or so, but they still have lots of room for improvement.

Since they are down the street from my home, it's nice that they have stepped up the beer selection recently. Where once SNPA and out-of-code DFH was the closest one could get to craft beer, they now offer a smattering of micros that, at least, keeps me from heading to the next town for my first beer stop. Prices are a bit below average in the area, so I do check here first.

Their current selection is still spotty at best. For instance, on a recent stop I spied ST Backburner, but no other ST bombers were available (I was hoping for the recently released Choklat). I bought a 4 pack of Founders Curmudgeon, but no other Founders offerings were available. Only one Rogue, only one Brooklyn (BBCS)...you get the idea.

They regularly have some good beer on hand, however. Oskar Blues, Victory, Southampton, Ommegang, Lagunitas, Butternuts and others are represented regularly-just not consistently and not extensively.

Still, they are making a solid effort to cater to craft beer consumers. Store personnel tell me that they are considering expanding their shelf space for craft beer in the near future, which bodes well. If you live in the area, why not try them first and encourage their future commitment to better beer.
