2012 batch

A: Bottle cap pops off with a huge hiss and then an eruption of foam out of the bottle, spilling nicely everywhere. Pours dark brown with a ridiculously enormous, fluffy and fizzy light brown head. Head fades annoyingly slowly. Just becomes thinner and wispier but refuses to die. Almost no lacing, little fluffs here and there.

S: Hershey's syrup. Sweet and chocolatey.

T: Huh. Lots of chocolate syrup and dark fruits. Feels really fluffy from all of the overcarbonation. A touch of chalky char in the finish. No noticeable barrel characteristic.

M: Carbonation is cranked up to about 11, really ruins the mouthfeel and makes it hard to even get a handle on the flavors.

O: Weird beer, think it's mildly infected perhaps. Flavors seem a little odd, hard to describe. Carbonation is horrifying and kills the mouthfeel and a lot of the flavor. Has no real aroma either (possibly as a result). Having said all of that, it's honestly not bad...just strange and messy.

poured into a snifter

appearance: blackish-brown, opaque through the glass but clear on the sides. little to no head

aroma: malts, raisins, coffee and a hint of whisky. very nice nose

palate: a little bitter, semi-smooth, little to no alcohol, cant tell the carbonation, sits nicely in the mouth

taste: a rice robust flavor offering including raisin, chocolate, toffee, and to kick it all off, whisky. great flavors

overall: a very nice surprise from MBC. they are slowly building an small army of great brews. if you are a milwaukee local, this is a MUST pick up!

Pours to a deep, deep red-brown, almost black. Head is thin, off-white and leaves almost no lacing. The aroma is malty, with maybe a little corn-based sweetener as well. Definitely roasted malt flavor with bourbon barrel present too. Not what I'm used to in a bourbon barrel-aged brew. It's weaker than most barrel aged beers-I'm surprised to see it listed at 7% ABV. The body is thin, but with minimal carbonation it is not bad. I would call this a good session bourbon barrel aged porter (which may sound ridiculous to some, but try it.) For the price, potency and flavor...this was pretty good.

12 oz bottle poured into a snifter.
7% ABV

A - Deep, dark brown, ruby mahogany in color, it's opaque in the glass and topped by a fleeting mocha head. It leaves nary a 'stache of foam on the glass, however.

S - Earthy. Dusty, dry cocoa opens the aroma but quickly moves into a chocolate-covered raisin scent. Odd dark fruit characteristics for a lager but well integrated into this particular beer. Vanilla notes from oak emerge as well as the wood itself, but if you're looking for a potent alcohol aroma, you'll be hard-pressed to find it. Subtle bourbon remains arrested to the balance most Midwestern breweries employ. Subtle yet complex!

T - Bold roasted malt is much more explosive than the aroma would lead one to believe. Tons of chocolate flavors from rocky milk chinks to dry cocoa and bitter bakers chocolate keep moving around the soft, quiet undertones of oak and vanilla.

M - Higher in carbonation, it keeps the beer from becoming too heavy. "Admiral" Stash is medium-full-bodied and features that clean lager character through the slightly bitter finish. Well-balanced and alcohol-absent!

O - Despite being well-balanced in terms of barrel-use, I actually find that it hasn't spend enough time in the wooden vessels. Subtle aroma nuances are nice but barely translate to the bold Baltic Porter base beer in flavor and could benefit from further (though not much) aging to bring them fourth slightly. With that being said, "Admiral" Stash is a great Baltic Porter both full of flavor and nice lager character!

Pours very dark brown with a foamy tan head. Lacing sticks.

The smell is of charcoal, bourbon, chocolate and anise.

The taste is charred without being too smoky. Chocolate, anise, dark earthy notes blend well, and has further depth with a touch of bourbon. Full-flavored, it hits full-bodied. Complex with a lager smoothness.

A wonderful example of the style with a nice touch of bourbon that adds to the complexity without being forward. Dangerously drinkable!

Not a big fan of MKE Brewing Co., but I was able to purchase this a single bottle so I figured I'd give it a try.

Roast on the nose, with a touch of sweetness.

On the palate, heavy roast char dominates. After sitting for awhile, a touch of dark fruit emerges.

The mouthfeel of this beer is off, it is light and almost fizzy. Makes me think I'm drinking a beer flavored soda.

Overall, not bad, but not good either. Much too thin, no barrel presence other than char, just not something I'd seek out again. The experience of truly enjoying a beer from MKE Brewing continues to elude me.
