stopped in this joint while in the area yesterday for a long day/night of football/drinking/etc
steve's already has 2 of the finer stores in the city so its nice to see that they are to expand, even if the 3rd store is located in the suburban sprawl next to a cartridge world and other silly stores
the PD location is a big airy room, which is quite a bit nicer in appearance than the other stores. i didn't really look through the wine, but it seemed to me that the university ave location had a better selection - i'll have to explore more.
the beer selection is located in a large walk-in cooler, similar to the other stores. There is also a minimal amount on the floor, primarily bombers. There seemed to be more domestic fluff than the other stores, but the craft selection is substantial. All of the 3 floyds bombers were available (moloko, munsterest, dreadnaught). Locals such as new glarus, lake louie and ale asylum had complete lineups, with capital/sprecher/lakefront/tyranena having a number of offerings too. I dont remember much from central waters and would say Riley's is the only place in town to shop for CW.
They had everything you would want from stone that is on the market (double bastard 3L and bomber, 080808, 12th anniv, ruination, oaked, etc), all of the boulevard premium line, breakfast stout/backwoods bastard in 4 packs, and a lot of other stuff you would expect to see at a madison beer store.
this place is young and will probably only improve...i have some friends that live out that direction so i'll be keeping an eye on it. still, its too far from downtown for this to be any sort of regular stop
it doesnt seem to have the character and cozyness of the university ave location but it was much needed in a very big residential area with no other local craft stores that are worth stopping at (liquor town and paradise liquor are both pretty tame)

this is a really nice store that surprised me!
Atmosphere: nice big store and it has a clean, new modern look to it. Well organized with a walk in beer cooler, pleanty of wisconsin locals, and a great representation of USA craft beers plus the over seas beers are not forgotten.
Quality: Lots of high quality beer in this store. Glad i used some restraint. Could have easily emptied my wallet here.
Service: Super firendly and very knowledable staff. This really impreesed me the most, but they also have great products in this store which allows the staff to shine.
Selection: Has tons of beers here, one of the better selection I have seen just outside of Madison. Impressive is all I can say!
Value: Not only does this store have great beer and the right people selling it...the price point is either right on or a bargain. Best combination of selection, service, and value I have seen in a while!

Stopped in here Sunday, 1/06/09 to pick up some Founders Imperial Stout, as well as their Double Trouble. In addition to those, I grabbed a single of Capital Baltic Porter, and a bomber of Rogue Yellow Snow, and a sixer of S.N. Torpedo.
They have a great selection here, and from what I can see, it's only getting better. I recently picked up a bottle of Nogne O Imperial Stout, and I also saw Nogne O Barleywine, and another from them. Lots of great Wisconsin, and regional breweries are represented here, as well as national brands. Good selection of imports as well, and this is the only Steve's that still has a walk-in area for some singles as well. The prices are in line with the rest of Madison.
The staff are very friendly, and extremely knowledgeable. And I know one of them is a dedicated Beer Advocate. My most recent visit was the single best service I've had at any of my many beer buying trips, since I've lived in Madison for the last 6 or so years. And that's saying a lot.
Also, in the same area, a Buffalo Wild Wings is getting ready to open, and the store is in the general vicinity of Quivey's Grove, which will be handy for those of us who frequent the Quivey's Grove Beer Festival.
Bottom line, these guys know their stuff. Drop in, talk to them about beer, maybe mention you are a B.A. They'll be more than happy to help you out.

Set up for the store was most of the beer in the cooler in the far right with a few, mostly cases and six packs on the floor. Singles were available, all cold. The selection was a good range of beers from across the nation, international and local Wisconsin. Pretty good bottle shop, will definitely come back again.

Just moved to this area of Madison from a different part of town, and this is my new go-to place.
Woodman's may have quantity, but Steve's has quality. From imports, to every type of New Glarus/CW/FFF/etc etc beer that they can get, to a large selection of bombers, Steve's is my first stop.
Service is fantastic. The staff is friendly and very knowledgeable. They always gone out of their way to help, or to suggest something that they think I may like.
While I wouldn't call Steve's prices "cheap", they are more than reasonable. And for the quality and service, you can't beat the prices.
