Hooray, another Quebec Gueuze to try out! Unfortunately, this one kinda sucks. I much prefer the other available Quebec sour (schoune)

Appearance: Before I opened this I noticed how much sediment is in the bottle (Hint: Alot). Usually I find yeast sediment appealing but this is kinda gross looking. Points deducted for that! Otherwise this looks decent enough. Almost like a good euro lager.

Smell: is not too bad. Sort of salty. floral notes, a bit of barnyard funk. Ginger and light fruits.

Taste: Well, it's definitely sour. Much more so than I expected. However, it seems to lack a common aspect that a good Gueuze has... I could probably figure it out if I bothered to open one and compare. It starts out alright, but the taste is kind of bland and hollow, and the finish is really soapy and vegetabley -- just downright unpleasant.

Mouthfeel: is rather poor too. Nowhere near dry enough on the finish and the body feels really thin. Carbonation feels rough and unnatural.

Overall - I feel bad saying this - but this is the worst Gueuze I've ever had! Thanks for trying though Breughel.

Thanks to bu11zeye for sharing this bottle.

The beer pours a yellow color with a white head. The aroma is a mix of what and apples with a little bit of tartness.

The flavor is wheat, lemons, apples and some lambic funk. The beer is very dry.

Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

I am surprised by the poor reviews of this beer. While it was not the best gueuze I have ever had (far from it), it is not too bad.

Picked up a bottle of this from Marche Omni in Gatineau. This is my first non-Belgian gueuze. Have to say, some of the reviews made me a bit nervous, but I was pleasantly surprised with this one.

Pours a pale clear yellow with a small, white head that dissipates fairly quickly.

Smell is great; citrus, apple, slight sour funk, yeast... very promising. The label claims that the beer is flavoured with coriander and curacao, and while I don't get a ton of either, there's definitely a spicy element.

The first thing that hits the tongue is a dry, puckering sourness (though it's not too intense), but that quickly leads into sweet apple and lemon flavours, finishing with the same dry sourness and the slightest funk. I'd like if the flavours were a bit more prominent overall, but it's pretty tasty.

Nice light, crisp mouthfeel with solid carbonation.

This is no Cantillon, but it's a tasty gueuze, if a little mild in flavour, and I'm quite happy to know there's a decent Canadian interpretation of the style that's available right across the bridge from me.

A- A tight bright white foam turned into big loose bubbles and melted away before my very eyes. That's 4cm of white head gone in about 6 seconds. Very pale golden.

S- Smells like fresh apple juice.

T- Tastes a lot like a fermented pineapple peel alcohol my dad makes. Tastes like watery sour fermented pineapple or apple not much else to me.

M- Crisp with high and aggressive carbonation. Leaves a puckering sensation.

D- Not particularly enjoyable. Easy to drink though and probably refreshing during the summer.

This lacks flavor and complexity but the exciting mouthfeel is kind of fun.
I felt like having a beer and this did not satisfy that need.

A bit of a gusher. Pours a slightly cloudy yellow with a finger of white foam that quickly dies down to a film. Decent retention, but not much lace. Yeast, apple and flowers in the aroma, which is quite pleasant, and hopefully bodes well. Pretty intense sourness of the bat, with very strong earthy yeast tones underneath. Its pretty decent, but there's maybe a little too much apple in the flavour for my liking. Light bodied with medium carbonation and a mouth puckering finish, this hits all the style points well.

On the basis of past reviews it sounds like they may have fiddled with the recipe a bit. While its still not a world class geuze, its not a bad one, and I'd be tempted to have it again.

650ml bottle sent to me by matt as part of CanBIF 3. Poured into a Stella glass.

Pours an unfiltered hazey yellow with lots of chunky yeast. Extremely low and lazy carbonation with almost no head, just a little lace. Aroma is a bit cheesy and funky with some spicy aromatics, cloves predominating, a little coriander and nutmeg, and some meatier hints at sage or marjoram. Grassy hop note with a touch of floral, almost apple blossom like sweetness.

Taste is less appealing, one might even go so far as to say boring. There's a bit of an unpleasant cooked veggie note that can't be shaken, which is surprising. Musty and earthy flavours mixed with the slightest of wheat and apple sweetness and a generic tart acidity. That's really about it sadly, there's no depth at all, and the spices are almost completely lost in the flavour. This is also extremely soft and watery, which adds to the blandness, and the carbonation is flattened out to nearly nothing. Wow, this is shockingly boring, and nothing develops as the beer warms besides an increasing sense of boredom with the whole experience. 650ml is a bit of a struggle, and the nose is really the only interesing this about this beer. I haven't had many Gueuzes, but this is not representative of the style at all, it's more of a weak witbier.

2007 edition, 4.5% alc. Vol.

Seems like a few here got bad bottles? Mine, I guess would not qualify as a very authentic geuze, but it certainly was not terrible.

Light gold, slight haze. A little acidic, also a slight sour twang, light german wheatbeer accents. Very slight sour taste, overpowered by the wheat malt, I don't know if they even tried to sour it on purpose. Its subtle, not extreme.

I found this brew pleasant, refreshing. Still, it could do better.

Bottle: Poured a bright clear golden color beer with a nice little pure white foamy head with good retention and lacing. Aroma of weak sweet malt with some subtle yeast. I could not detect any sourness, tart, oak or any other aromas linked to the style. Taste is also more similar to a light Belgian ale then a gueuze. If I was to rate to style this would be a 0.5/5 but since I’m not this is probably very similar to a light Belgian ale lacking character.

Labelled as "La Gueze de Kamouraska". Thanks Sammy.
Right from opening the cap the foam would rise out of the bottle like water on the stove boiling over a pot. Carbonation was way too overactive, even for the style. Tiny bubbles and fist full of foam would last, but sometime was needed for it settle to even that. Completely clouded body, light yellow on bottom, a deeper orange colour overtop. Foul Belgian Pale aroma. As if the beer wasn't quite finished, the texture is rough and also fizzy - like club soda. No taste or tartness, more like a Belgian Pale but without spice. Some sort of dried fruit (pear, maybe apple) but weak. No lingering, no presence, slight yeast in the front but overall little character. Not offensive, but no pucker, no tart, no interest. More lame than wild.

Sample glass from tasting with northyorksammy, grub, and biegaman.

A bland fruity aroma is matched by an equally bland flavour, predominantly watery Granny Smith apple, with some unpleasant vegetable notes in the background. Bitter cooked veg is also present an otherwise inoffensive aftertaste. One saving grace for this beer is its mouthfeel, which I thought was quite good: light and not too carbonated.

A poor geuze, overall.

This is reportedly the world's worst geuze. I found it rather weak, then again there are Belgian so-called-geuzes that are mediocre too. Very bubbly head, it is very sweet with little but sugary and apple juice/cider taste, and an acidic finish.Aggressively carbonated like a club soda.

tasting party sept 11/06 with northyorksammy, crwills, biegaman and me (grub). everyone threw in a few bottles and we had an interesting mix of beer and mead. not sure of exactly who contributed what, so i'll just thank everyone.

pours a slightly cloudy yellow with tons of fluffy white head. just pouring it was a challenge as the extreme carbonation kept causing overflows. indeed, once the bottle was opened it continued to foam over until we got about half of it poured. lots of lace left behind on the glass.

aroma is nice. spicy, but i can't put my finger on a particular one. slightly fruity.

taste is quite spicy, but with no noticeable funk or sourness that i'd have expected.

mouthfeel is odd. it's super carbonated but still feels quite thin. i'd even say that it felt over carbonated.

drinkability is ok. i'm not really into that much carbonation. it just didn't do anything to excite me, and seems to have missed the mark on the style.

Came in a 660 ml brown bottle. The name on the label says La Geuze de Kamouraska, and the abv is listed as 4.5%. Classy retro label design, not quite art-nouveau but I can't exactly pinpoint the style.

A cloudy apricot hue in appearance, lots of carbonation action, and a massive chunky white head on the pour with strong-willed retention. Thick lacing as well. Wheat, yeast and citrus on the nose, some faint pepper spice and floral notes. Flavour is bold on the first sip, straw-like at first, but becoming very sweet towards the middle, citrusy sweet, with coriander and black pepper coming out in the finish, and herbal grassy hops finally appearing on the aftertaste. The mouthfeel is light and effervescent. I'm not a huge fan of the gueze style, this is a fairly average sample of the style, but is enjoyable all the same. Nice to get the chance to see what the Quecec microbreweries are capable of doing. Many thanks to 3Vandoo for the bottle.
