I split this one with my girlfriend last night. She is into wine, so I thought that she might like the wine-like style of this beer. I really liked the fact that the bottle had a cork underneath the bottle cap. I think this touch sums up the marriage of wine and beer flavors in the lambic style.
Pours a deep merlot red with a thin pinkish-purple head that reminds me of that bubbly sparkling grape juice that my parents let us drink on special occasions when we were kids so that we could feel like grown-ups.
Smells like raspberries with a little bit of old-fruit muskiness.
Tastes like raspberries (framboise is french for raspberry). I also taste hints of chocolate. This is a very sweet one....almost candy-like. Come to think of it, it tastes alot like a raspberry tootsie pop when you crunch down into the tootsie roll.
As with the smell, this reminds me of the way that a sparkling grape juice feels in your mouth, and like that non-alcoholic drink, there is no alcohol warmth whatsoever. Very bubbly.
Overall, this is a great compromise for us beer drinkers who are not big fans of wine. This worked well for a romantic evening with my girlfriend since it pleased both of our palates and has that air of romance that surrounds the wine experience. Also good for making out since there is really no aftertase or hop-heavy bitterness to leave your mouth feeling stale. Basically, this is a very sweet wine-like beer that is highly drinkable and good for "Barry White nights."
