Thanks to Thirstybird for the opportunity to try this one. Pours a burnt-orange hue with a fluffy, two-inch, bright white head. Nose expresses citrus and cork. Taste consistent with nose - minerally with a little funk at the back. Tangy, tart and slightly medicinal. Mouthfeel is light in body with a lively carbonation and a light, pleasant astringency. Overall, a nice example of the style that could probably enjoy a few more years in the cellar.

75cl at de Heeren

Pours a deep golden orange with a white head fueled by many a bubble. Served in a Lindemans glass.

There is that barnyard/grass/hay funk thing going on. Light fruity elements of grape, apple, lemon.

Light and bubbly as is to be expected from a geuze but pretty darn bubbly though. Really dry.

3 yrs in the bottle at this point and I would keep it in the cellar for a few more. The young lambic in there doesn't give it too much character. Straightforward and good.

Got this one at De Heeren a couple years back and shared this particular bottle with the Loo Crew. Thanks for the fun afternoon guys!

From a 75cl into a snifter

APPEARANCE: Pours a two finger, looser looking, white colored head with good retention. Amber orange with medium levels of carbonation. Head fades to a foam cap. A half wisp remains leaving some dots of lacing down the glass.

SMELL: Lots of funky on this one. Some moldy and dank basement aromas, hay and barnyard, as well as some light lemon notes. Bold for sure, and quite funky.

TASTE: More acidity than the nose had suggested, with funky flavors at the swallow. Moldy and hay flavors with funky cheese and some barnyard flavors at the finish. Bold aftertaste of funky and moldy cheese and a touch of lemon sourness and vinegary acidity. Funky stuff and quite flavorful.

PALATE: Medium body and higher levels of carbonation. Light on the palate, goes down fine and finishes quite dry and puckering. Light and zesty carbonation.

OVERALL: Pretty good stuff. A little funkier and danker than I normally go for, as I'm usually a straight up sour and acidity kind of guy, but this was still really well done and very enjoyable. I've gone through a few of these and look forward to seeing how it develops. Well worth checking out. Recommended.

750mL bottle brought back for a recent tasting - big thanks to Jeffo for bringing this one!
Brewed in commemoration of the extremely popular De Heeren van Liedekercke (the gentlemen of Liedekercke), which celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2011.

Poured into a small snifter. Hazy copper peach in colour, with a thick ring of foam and some wild, Belgian swirls and islands of head here and there.

Nose is wild, tart, mildly acidic, with some nice funky notes, citrus, and other bold gueuze notes. This is certainly shaping up to be a proper gueuze.

Similar tasting notes as in the nose - big sour acidity, tartness from the citrus, some funk, with a good dry finish. Gotta have that funk.

Carbonation is quite sharp, lighter bodied.

If you like gueuze, this one is a pretty damn good one indeed. Dry and funky, sour with a mild citrus. Good stuff indeed.

750 ml bottle, bottled 17 May 2011, best before 3 September 2043, poured into a wine glass.

A- Pours a hazy golden apricot color, topped with a big white head, good retention, leaves spotty lacing.

S- Lots of oak and woody, leathery funk, smells quite sour with a particularly prominent lemon aroma, also some mineral smell.

T- More musty, oaky, slightly leathery funk, moderate lactic acidity with lots of lemon as well, also some peach flavors. Finishes with some mineral flavors and lingering acidity.

M- Medium-bodied, moderate carbonation, smooth feel, finishes very dry.

O- Certainly the best gueuze I've had from Lindemans, not a bad deal either at 20 euros for take-away from de Heeren. A very tasty, drinkable beer.

750mL brought back from the restaurant. Split with my wife.

A: Opening bottle of this damn near killed me, so look out. Pours with a massive foamy head that settles into something more appropriate. Color is cloudy straw-orange.

N: Oak, light sourness, ginger, and lemon zest. Lots of wood in this. Measurable level of funk and plenty of leather. Some bleu cheese and sulphuric acid. Perhaps not as complex as the big boys, but the flavors are assertive.

T: More of the denseness from the oak, and it's plenty sour with a slight malt sweetness to round out the edges. Has some sharp acid which comes and goes and detracts from the experience when it's there. Appropriate level of doughiness.

M: Very dry and clean. Light bodied and well carbonated.

O: Tasty stuff, and a lot better than I expected it to be. (Maybe the year and a half has knocked out some of the kinks.) A worthy beer.

750ml bottle into a tulip.

A: Pours a slightly hazy burnt orange with a thick white head. Slightly darker than the average gueuze.

S: Moderately sweet pale malt and wheat, a bit of pleasant mineral character, cheesy funk and a subtle note of acidity.

T: The taste brings some mild barnyard-ish brett, lightly sweet grain, mineral, oak, earthy dry tartness mid-palate. Stone fruit notes come out as it warms.

M: Pervasive carbonation lends a very creamy feel to an otherwise light and dryish body.

O: Certainly a good gueuze, a bit like an amped-up Cuvee Rene. Some more time in the bottle might let the bugs cut down on the residual sugar a bit more.
