Review from notes taken on 12/12/10 at the Malvern location. Served in a pint glass this brew was served extremely cold.

Appears a dark brown with some lighter brown clarity around the edges. A thin dark tan head appeared much thinner than expected and swirls hardly revived any additional bubbles.

The nose of this brew is lightly roasted with faint suggestions of chocolate and coffee. There is a strong character to this brew that is quite mineral and metallic-like and almost chlorinated. It is not all that enjoyable and it completely dominates the anticipated character of the aroma.

The taste follows suit with metallic and chlorinated flavors. It is lightly roasted with a lingering flavor of grain and must that turns to a light sour note.

Medium to light in the feel with a very light level of carbonation. The feel was not the typical smoothness you expect of an oatmeal stout, it was actually somewhat dry and roasty with the metallic and chlorinated flavor taking center stage. Really not an enjoyable brew, I left half my glass sit and opted to just drink water instead.

Served in a pint glass

From notes.

A: Deep, dark brown. Quarter mocha, frothy fingernail head.

S: Burnt roasted malt with hint of chocolate and oak. Boring.

T: Sweet cocoa, burnt malt, oak, and semi-sweet chocolate sauce. Quite roasty. Very smooth and easy to drink; almost to much so.

M: Full bodied with low carbonation.

O: An average oatmeal stout at best here. Not too complex and just roasty, burnt, and full. Only upside here was how smooth the beer was - very easy to drink.

On tap as Oatmeal Stout. Pours a dark brown with thin light tan head. Nose is light with notes of roasted malts and tangy sweet anise. Light notes of oatmeal, roasted malts underneath, tons of boozy anise almost jager like. Light body, soft on the palate, strong carbonation, prickly finish.

On tap at the Glen Mills location.

Deep brown body with a small, quickly settling off-white head. Patchy lacing clings to the glass here and there. Roasty nose with hints of chocolate and coffee and unfortunately a subtle but definitely out-of-place sour note.

The nose is confirmed in the taste; decent roast malt and coffee notes and a touch of chocolate are diminished slightly but the faint but persistent sour, “off” quality.

Medium thin bodied with carbonation that’s slightly too fizzy. Not as silky as claimed on the beer menu I’m afraid. There’s a very subdued oat smoothness but not enough to salvage the mouthfeel. Not terrible, but decidedly middle of the road. The sourness didn’t ruin the beer but in combination with the subpar feel it came close.

This really just struck me as an average oatmeal stout, with nothing really standing out in particular. Roasty nose, nice chocolate and roasted malt taste, but had a grain huskiness in the finish. Mouthfeel was a little on the thin side, but still drank pretty decently. I'd get it again.

First had: on tap at McKenzie Brew House, Malvern, PA

Poured dark brown/black with a small tan head. Typical stout qualities. Aroma of dark malts and coffee. Roasty malt taste, with notes of coffee and cocoa. A bit on the thin side for a stout, and a bitter aftertaste. Drinkable, relative to other things on tap, but obviously not the best stout you'll ever have.

Had this on tap at the McKenzie location in Glen Mills, PA.

Appearance: Very dark, almost black but with a reddish tint in the light. The head was two-finger and a nice tan in contrast to the black body. Lacing was plenty.

Smell: The smell was good. It smelled of roasted caramels and sugars, breadyness, with a hint of cocoa and malts.

Taste: Pretty darn appealing. The forefront tasted of dark malts and a bit of chocolate, while the back left a bittersweet chocolate taste.

Mouthfeel: Just an average mouthfeel for a stout; not really any carbonation and medium/full-bodied.

Overall: An excellent stout, would definitely have it again with dinner.

Had on tap today at the brewpub in Glen Mills.

a - Pour a very dark brown color with one inch of off white head and moderate carbonation evident.

s - Smells of roasted malts, nuts, chocolate, and light cream. Very roasty and chocolatey, I liked it.

t - Tastes of roasted malts, light chocolate, and light caramel malts. Not as much chocolate as the nose, and a small step down, but still pretty nice and roasty.

m - Medium body and moderate carbonation. Very smooth and creamy, and very easy to drink.

o - Overall a pretty nice, easy to drink oatmeal stout. Very roasty, this was one of their better beers I've had, aside from the saison vatour. Would have it again.

Draft at the brewpub.

Pours a deep dark brown color with mahogany edges and a 1.5 finger mocha head that quickly settles into a thick, lasting ring. Streaks and splotches of soapy lacing left behind.

Slightly smokey roasted malt aroma with a nice balance of sweet and burnt malt notes.  Hints of oatmeal, toffee, gourmet espresso bean, toast and nut countered by sweeter chocolate notes.  Kind of tame though for the style.

Full bodied with a dry roasted malt presence that's countered by chocolate malt sweetness.  Strong oatmeal character with burnt toast and deeply roasted coffee bean flavor followed by dark chocolate malt, toffee and hazelnut.  Subtle lactic presence smoothes things out but it's pretty dry/roasted and somewhat acrid.  Subtle alcohol sweetness towards the finish but there's little to no heat.  Easy to drink but could use a little sweetness.  A touch too dry for my preference.

Pours a deep, near black, moderate amounts of khaki head with decent lacing. Scent begins quite sweet with equal parts chocolate and coffee and cream. Light roastyness and dry grainyness settle the beer back down, mild earthy hopyness on the end. Taste fortunately begins with the nutty, roasty and grainy notes before diving into lightly bitter chocolate and coffee and cream. Body, while moderately heavy lacks the smoothness expected from an oatmeal stout. Nice tasting beer that could use a little refinement.

a: This was black and it was served to me with a medium sized, bone white head.

s: A surprisingly strong roasty cocoa aroma with hints of coffee grounds.

t: Not a lot of layers maybe, but I really liked the strong, bitter roast. It was long lasting and tasted of dark chocolate and coffee.

m: Silky smooth.

o: Just a really nice stout.
