Cask offering at Old Forge. Via the handpump, this brew pours a clear amber color with skimpy off-white head that doesnt last long and swirls hardly revive it.

The smell is fruity to floral with a solvent hint of alcohol. Some faint toffee and caramel grain provides a base that carries most of the aromatics of this brew despite being dry-hopped. Overall it had a bit of medicinal quality.

The flavor is full of fruity hop character with a bit of toffee grain and mild alcohol ester. More sips yield earthy and grassy flavors. A modest bitterness and oily to pulpyfresh hop accent borders a vegatative quality into the aftertaste.

This is a medium bodied brew with a light level of carbonation.Even too light for being on cask. A bit medicinal and awkward at times but otherwise not too shabby. It is worth a try if you happen across it but not somethin I would go out of my way for again.

On tap at Old Forge on 5/7/11.

A - Hazy ruby red liquid with sunset orange highlights and a slender creamy beige head that reduced to a thin ring and patchy retention, depositing brush strokes of delicate lacing around the snifter.

S - Nose suggests cereal grains, burnt biscuits and bready malts, giving the aroma a toasted character. Spicy yeast is also apparent and suggests herbal and earthy perfumes, like something a hippie would splash on for a hot date. Hop character is kind of muted, although there is a slight grassy component thrown in for good measure.

T - Like the aroma, I get a sense of an abundance of toasted grains, biscuity malt and cereal, but with a spicy Belgian flair. Spicy, herbal notes add a dry, biting bitterness, which lends itself to the almost burnt biscuit character in the backend.

M - Medium bodied with a syrupy texture and moderate carbonation. Finish is kind of dry with a medicinal, herbal bite and some residual spiciness on the palate.

D - Maybe a tad too herbal for my tastes, but overall this is pretty drinkable and boasts a fairly complex malt character.

A: Pours into the glass with a thick beige head that has moderate staying power and leaves lacing. Beer is a deep amber with nice clarity.

S: Slight hint of fruit... not unlike juicy-fruit gum. Malt, toast, spicy, slightly peppery.

T: Malty, toasty, fruity, spicey. Slight hops and pepper in the after taste. Well balanced.

M: Medium body. Slight carbonation bite.

D: Very good. It goes down smoothly. I would drink again.

Overall I really liked this beer. I found it well made and balanced.

Excuse me, what style of beer is the Slightly Rood?

It's a Belgian.

Oh, OK. What kind of Belgian? Dubbel, Triple, Pale. Flanders Red?

A Belgian.

And with that exchange our adventure begins and ends with a mere 5 oz sampler.

A-Lightly hazed orange kissed dark copper with a thin off-white head that reduced to a wispy veil and left spotty lace.

S-Sweet toasted biscuit malt with a touch citrus/floral hops and "typical" Belgian yeast notes.

T-Sweet biscuit malt up front with light spicy citrus hops spicy Belgian yeast notes and a swirl of apple and banana in the finish. All nice but nothing in it wows my palate.

M-Medium-light bodied, fairly sharp with nice lingering Belgian yeast notes.

D-Good and presented without any flaws but typical and rather boring. It is mostly yeast driven in it's flavour and doesn't offer anything else to really differentiate itself. Maybe the style descriptor of "It's a Belgian" was intentional?
