In retrospect, part of the reason I embraced and subsequently clung to craft beer is that I had to work hard to get it. That and it had a certain cache that pissed people off - 'why you drink that dark expensive beer?' 'Too hoppy!', etc. That and the fact that the search is always part of the fun and its great to be unique. Some of this is a non-issue in Oregon, and perhaps that's why I get fed up and jaded at our beer scene here (there currently).

The Trion Tavern is a place that I would have killed for not 5 years ago in the greater Fort Wayne metro region. It is also quite logical - there had been no beer bars in this place of 200,000 people so there's not much competition. And its easy to get World Class's impressive portfolio.

The classic old bar setting; ancient bar, pressed tin bar-back, vintage tap-handles. An air about the place that your long-dead grandpa might saunter up and order a PBR. Fox News, sports, and other crap on ridiculously large and awfully placed flat-screen TVs.

But the taps. A great beer bar for Chicago - let alone Nowheresburg, NE Indiana. Alpha King, Bell's Best Brown, Red's Rye, Unearthly, 90 Minute, Hopslam, Delerium Tremens, Founder's Porter. Frickin' wow. The owner chatted us up and confirmed 20 more taps were on the way, including a few selections such as Dreadnaught, 120 minute IPA, Ommegang's Flemish Sour, other amazing stuff I can't remember. Holy crap.

My only complaint was the tolerance of cigarette smoking and the food - usually I seek bar food that will soak up the booze. This was more like food that you needed the beer to soak up the grease instead of the other way around. They need to remedy this, particularly if the owner's right and these aren't Fort Wayne and New Haven residents sucking up incredibly rare beers that can cost $12 for a 10-oz poor.

As noted in the score, I have to give the place an Exceptional rating for selection as this would be a good beer bar nearly anywhere in the Midwest. For Fort Wayne, its transcendent.

They fill growlers too. How handy since most people are a long drive away from this place and its hard to say no when so many beautiful tap-handles are staring you down.

This place is killer. In Fort Wayne for a wedding, I wanted to hit Trion's since I'd heard so much about their tap list. Also, I looked forward to finding (any) Three Floyds on tap, but holy shit - did they have an amazing selection.

Score! All draughts were $3.50, and bottles were $4-5. In addition to Bomb! on tap, I also got to have fresh Zombie Dust, Dreadnaught, Robert The Bruce, Stone Mocha IPA, and a Dubbel by Taxman.

The burgers were amazing (be sure to try the Hangover Burger), and I loved their home style fries.

In addition, I got to meet the owner, Greg, and talked beer with him for over an hour. The service is great, and Greg conducts his business with a passion for both beer and people.

Overall, I cannot recommend this place highly enough. Very fairly priced, with great service, and a truly surreal tap list, you MUST visit Trion!

I miss you already, Indiana.

Extensive beer selection, decent decor, acceptable food. Ask for beer prices first or you might get surprised. They do run beer specials occasionally which ease the pain a bit.

The Trion is a bit out of the way for me as I live in Fort Wayne. But I've never been disappointed that I've gone. It's usually dead the weekdays unless there is a game on. The weekends can get a little crowded and they also have a dart night but I can't remember what night that is. I usually sit out on the patio or at the bar and usually have good service though there have been the occasional night when I was left with an empty beer for way too long and couldn't get noticed.

This is the best tap line in the Fort Wayne/New Haven area. Period. It has most of the 3 Floyd's selection on Tap and is constantly moving through beer from every part of the world. They also have a great bottle selection. The food is pretty good. The menu is vast and includes burgers, sandwiches, and pizzas. It's always been fast in serving and it's always hit the spot.

Trion also hosts Brew Haven, an annual beer fest that is always a blast in early August. If you're around, definitely come!

Great beer bar. Food is meh, deep fried pickles are awesome, they also have a pulled pork sandwich that's pretty good. Beer selection is ridiculous, if you can't find something you don't like you're not a true craft brew enthusiast. Only beef with this place is pricing on beer, I understand if it's rare or just a normally expensive brew but the sizes are usually small (10oz) and the prices can get a lil steep. Still best beer selection in NE Indiana.

Their website keeps you up to date on events and what is on tap. Staff has yet to suggest something I didn't like, ask if you don't know what to order and they will find something to your liking.

Really amazing place! Ridiculous that a place this great could be in such a small town, and unlikely area. Beer and bourbon selection are unmatched anywhere within a hundred miles at least. And, the food is spectacular as well. Classic american food, very well done. I would tell anyone, anywhere to come here. You will never be disappointed, except maybe occasionally the service is a bit slow, and not fully educated on the vast beers and bourbons. But overall, wow, wow, wow! Do not miss your opportunity to come here. It's like a disneyland of drinks and good food!

A great bar and establishment in downtown New Haven. They have the awesome Brew Haven craft beer festival, the only outdoor seating of any bar in New Haven, a huge selection of local and global craft beers, and the best burgers in town.

While flights and some beers can be a little pricey they have regular customer appreciation sales. I went in the night before Thanksgiving and they were having a ThanksBeering celebration, 1/2 price beers and Greg, the owner, gave everybody free Brew Haven tshirts. And right now, for the entire month of January Zombie Dust, one of my faves, is $2.75, the whole month. Stop reading and go to the Trion for a beer ir two right now.

Love this place. I frequent here quite often. One of the best beer selections on tap in the Fort Wayne area. Maybe even northeast IN. Normally plenty of Three Floyd's, Bells, Founders, Goose Island, and Great Divide. 58 taps. You can get flights for $14. They also have rare tapping such as Shark Pants and Boogoop. Some of the beers can get pricey but worth it. Food is good. Try their pizza and sausage rolls. Service can be spotty at times. Now non smoking. Check out their website. It has a uodated tapping list and shows whats on deck. Check it out if you can.

If it wasn't for BA I wouldn't have found this place so thanks to everybody that reviewed it prior to my visit. All the other reviews are pretty dead on great tap list the best in area that I found. I was in the area for business from the East coast so I was very pleased to see (12) Three Floyds on tap loved the Zombie Dust. They had about 50 taps with a great selection of Belgian beers St. Bernardus Abt 12, Nogne O, Golden Draak etc. Had a great selection of Michigan beers Founders, Bells, New Holland, etc. Had quite a few flat screen TV to watch the games on. I didn't care for the smoking since they advertise it's a non smoking establishment. The food was awesome the pork sandwich that was smoked for 14hrs was incredible so were the ribs. The only things that was a small negative beside the smoking was the fact that the samples were a little on the pricer side $14 for (5) 5 oz. samples. Overall this was a great bar and worth the trip from miles away you will not be disappointed.

I've been here several times now, so I thought I'd give a review.

Pros:
1.Tap selection is the best in the area. I think they have over 50. Not many average ones, they are mostly all top notch. All FFF year rounds and seasonals, Founders, Bells, Two Brothers, Dark Horse, and many others.
2.Nice carry out selection.
3.Friendly Staff.
4.Good Food.
5.Clean
Cons:
1. Very expensive. $15 for a flight of five, 4oz. pours. That's .75 per oz. $7 for a 10oz pour. Ouch.
2.They make up rules as they go. Sometimes they pull taps off without notice. Sometimes they do or don't allow smoking. Sometimes when you pay $1 for a song in the jukebox it is loud, and sometimes they turn it down so you can't even hear it.

Overall, if you bring lots of money, you will drink lots of good beer.

Nice area downtown New Haven first of all. The Beer selection they have on tap is hands down the best in the area, 58 plus taps (many FFF taps but also many old ones as the don't move through them very fast), also bottles to choose from (no growlers though). If you want to try a few different beers order their FLIGHT but bring LOTS of $$$ for the flight ($13 FOR 5, 3 OZ POURS) or any other beer really. The food is just average greasy bar food, the staff don't know much but bottom line here 58 beers to choose from some old so ask first. Just a side note they change and pull off taps when they feel like it with little or no notice.

Visited Trion Tavern on a business trip after finding through BA. The tap selection here was incredible. 50+ beers on tap, including 9 Three Floyds. Went in on a Thursday. There was an NFL game + a college football game on that night so I was thinking there might be a decent crowd. Could not be more wrong about that. When I walked in there was only 2 people there, a couple sitting down eating. I was the only person at the bar so I had 2 flat screens to catch both games which was nice. The bartenders were not very knowledgeable at all about the beer, but I knew what I was looking for anyway.

Would recommend if you are in the area due to the large selection of very quality beers.

The main reason atmosphere got knocked by me is the smoking. I spoke with the owner, and he is a non-smoker. He said for special beer events, he will make those non-smoking, so I suggest, if you do not smoke, you look for those events!

I was in the area for work and was REALLY impressed by the line up they had. 54 taps and maybe only 3 were for those who did not drink craft beer!!

They had a good representation of local, German and Belgian beer as well as a others around the US.

I got a pizza and it was pretty tasty, but being vegetarian, I am not a great judge of food choices.

I will probably get one more trip out there and cannot wait to see what is on - I just wish they would ban smoking in IN overall!!

The only reason I thought it was a tad pricy was because they did not list the prices on the menu and one thing seemed a tad high. Also, I got a sampler that I pad 10.00 for, and got about 2 ounces of each beer out of 5 or 6 that would have fit in the glass. I suggest they size up on the pour or size down on the glass because it makes it appear to be a bit pricy that way.

Greg the owner does a great job in finding some rear beers and rotates them on a regular basis so there is always something new to try. He is planning having a Founders tapping in the next few weeks that will feature KBS. The wings are great ( I get them naked ) along with their burgers and pizzas (they make their own pizza dough). Not much to say here that hasn't already been said. Atmosphere is typical bar - pool table, jukebox, etc. Points off of atmosphere for smoking. There is a family room in the back that is slightly smoky and is a mild annoyance. The bar proper is usually profoundly smoky and not a place I would want to spend any considerable amount of time.

Beer quality and selection are top notch for the area. You pretty much have to drive to Muncie to find the nearest comparable beer selection. Roughly 50 taps - taplist usually somewhat up to date, but there are usually 1-3 offerings that are not on the list. The servers are rarely aware of this, and you must trek through the noxious haze to speak with the bartender if you want to know what they are. Great selection of FFF beer, including hard to find draft only stuff that rarely makes it out of the brewpub (i.e. Zombie Dust, Cerveza Mysterioso, Krunk Monk).

Beer prices are high - $8 for 12 oz of Hopslam, $10 for 10 oz of Batch 9000, you get the picture. Flights are available and are the only way to go for a budget-conscious patron.

Food is pedestrian. Inoffensive, but nothing to write home about.

Overall, the best place to go for a beer in the Ft. Wayne area if you are willing to pay the money, tolerate the smoke, and aren't expecting a top notch meal. Definitely worth an occasional visit.

One of the best selections of beer I've seen on hand at a single bar. I live in Indianapolis, and I don't know of a single bar in Indiana that has a better tap selection. A variety of selections ranging from Dark Horse, Founders, Three Floyds, North Coast, Dogfish Head, and Left Hand. The owner stopped by our table and informed us of an upcoming Three Floyds event November 13th, where they will be tapping between 10-12 Three Floyds beers. A great establishment that is a must if you're in the Fort Wayne area.

Upon hearing about this establishment I knew that I must go and check it out for myself. I am glad that I did. For fans of microbrews in Norteastern Indiana and the Fort Wayne area this place is a dream come true.

The claim to have 54 beers on tap, the majority of good craft beers. I counted, it more like 46 at the current moment, but no big deal. They said they rotate many of the taps depending on the seasonal brews and to give variety. Currently you can find different flavors of Left Hand, Dogfishhead, Bell's, Chimay, Founder's, New Holland, Dark Horse, Stone, Rogue, Great Divide, 9 Three Floyd's, and several others. A few others on bottles. A nice selection of food, I had a delicious pulled pork sandwich. Plenty of room. I was there on an early Saturday evening and it wasn't overly crowded. Flight sampes for $8 are good deal as you can pick 5 choices. And you can take growlers of anything on tap home. Compared to other beer bars I've been to, most brews seemed fairly right to moderately high priced.

The two big drawback. One is this is a smoking establishment. Being in New Haven it doesn't have to go by the Fort Wayne smoking ban. In all fairness, it wasn't very smoky when I was in there. Two is they have 3 TV's and a jukebox all battling for sound over the ambient bar noise. They'd be much better off turning the TV's to mute and letting the jukebox play in the pool room. Both of these are minor complaints.

Over all, this is a GREAT find for the area. I will be making regular stops and telling everyone I know about the place.

If you're in fort wayne and want to just drink a pint at a time this is the place to go.
It's in new haven though and smoking is allowed so make sure you're aware of this. This takes away from the atmosphere, beer is not meant to be messed up by cigarettes so i sat in the family section.

My waitress sucked a high school girl who didn't know anything was rude, and acted stupid. She was slow and had no redeeming qualities about her.

Selection was outstanding for Fort Wayne, remember fort wayne has nothing else like this around for straight craft beer fans. They have roughly 45 taps, and they have a unique selection. They have even had sunking from indy on tap before but I missed it.

The prices though are rough, 6 bucks for a tulip glass of pumking when I went. it was underpoured too. I will probably go back if sunking is on tap but that's sunking bringing me back not the trion.

Myself and a co-worker were looking for a place to get some food and a couple quality drinks in the Fort Wayne area. We were on the NE side of Fort Wayne so we were debating between going to the other side of town or going to the Trion Tavern. With no website or menu to be found online I was a little skeptical at first of Trion, but the previous 9 reviews and A average swayed my opinion. I'm glad we chose Trion...here's why:

As we drove to downtown New Haven, the place was located on the corner and easy to find. Parking in the back lot was easy too. We entered through the back (kind of through the kitchen, almost like a secret entrance into a speakeasy which was cool). There was bar, table, and outdoor seating. We chose to sit at the bar.

The amount of taps and selection is pretty amazing. Probably ~40 or so like previous people said. Here are some choices from memory:

Bell's Two Hearted
Bell's Quinnanan Falls
Sierra Nevada Tumbler
GI Island Sofie
3F Gumballhead
3F Behemoth
North Coast Red Seal Ale
North Coast Old Rasputain
Celis White
2010 KBS (Bottles)
Other bottles to go

The list above doesn't do justice compared to what they actually had. They really need a website and I told them this. They also mentioned that they make changes weekly. Some new 3F is on deck for next week (Arctic Panzer, Moloko, and something else I can't remember)

The bartender was nice and easy to talk to. She was helpful and when I asked, someone else (owner?) told me where I could buy 3F in the area which I appreciated.

The food selection was good too. I got some chilli and a pulled pork sandwich, both of which were really tasty. There were many other choices too.

I can't imagine there is a better beer bar in Fort Wayne or a 100 mile radius. Next time I'm in the area I'll be back for sure.

I had heard mixed emotions about this bar, but most were positive. Upon entrance into Trion, the first thing to notice is the bar. A gorgeous wooden floor piece surrounds a nice chunk of the bar with two sets of tap handles in front and back. Trion has 45 taps and most are of quality brews. The beer list sits a little too heavily on American micro's. The only Belgian beer I recall is Chimay White. The beer list has all of their beers listed (which was not updated) without any of the prices. I ended up having a FFF Blackheart for $7 and an Avery Maharaja for $8. Each beer was about a 14 oz. pour. The decor was of updated beer signs which once again were of American micros. I'm almost wondering how they can turn over the beer fast enough to keep every draft line fresh. There was myself and two other people on a Wednesday at 5:00pm. One person was drinking a Coke and the other a BMC. I think this place has lots of potential but would benefit from lowering their prices a tad more to reel in more people from Ft. Wayne. I'd definately go back and hope next time it's a smoking free establishment.

I had heard about the awesome beer selection and had to try. My wife and I had been here years ago to mostly enjoy the food. I remember them having a decent beer selection for this area, but nothing like what they have today. They have 45 awesome beers on tap and most of them are difficult if not impossible to find in package stores around here. When I discovered what they had on tap, I had to give my brother a call and he and his wife joined us too.

Beers we enjoyed:

Chimay Tripel
Great Divide Oaked Aged Yeti
Delirium Tremens
Bluegrass Brewing Bourbon Barrel Stout
Founders Double Trouble
Monks Cafe Sour
Heavy Seas Siren Noire
Old Rasputin RIS

There were so many others that I would have loved to try. They will fill growlers of most if not all the selections they have. Our server was very friendly as was the bartender who had a good knowledge of the beers that he had on tap. They were out of a few that we asked about; but he mentioned that they have new ones coming in each week. They served the beers in the appropriate glassware. The food was good. You will not find a better beer selection in this area. I have to go back for the Avery and the Southern Tier selections. Highly recommend it! Good job Trion!

Where to begin?.?.? Let me start off by first saying I have been to quite a few bars and pubs throughout the Midwest due to my job experience. Each time, the places I went and people I met made a lasting impression on me. Some good, some bad.
With March 17 being my first time going to Trion Tavern I was not entirely sure what to expect. I had heard fellow beer enthusiast talking about it and thus decided to check it out. First thing that struck me when entering the establishment is the old-style bar feel. Some of the walls are lined with old 40/50's style metal looking mosaic tiles. Next west the old wooden floor which had seen its years along with the wooden bar counter. I took my seat at the bar upon which time I was humbly greeted by one of the servers of the establishment.
After informing the individual this was my first time, I was given some time to consider the many choices of beer on tap. Of course he gestured me to several of the beers which had just been taped for the evening. After sitting there for barely 5 minutes I made my choice of 3 Floyds Dreadnaught. MMMM... So good... I continued my evening by enjoying a Dark Horse Tres Blueberry Stout and then I moved to darker ale but unfortunately cannot remember the name for the life of me. Sorry. While sitting there I got the treat of my life!!! As mentioned, I have been all over the Midwest. One of the things that rarely have befallen me in recent years is that of sincere generosity. I was privileged and thankful though to enjoy a night which I will never forget.
Tonight the owner himself was at the establishment. I was ecstatic that he personally took the time to great almost everyone in the bar personally, including me. We talked for a little and I complemented him on his wonderful establishment. A little while later, after talking with friends and familiar faces who I knew from outside the establishment, I and several others were presented with a small glass filled with an unknown to me at the time beverage. At first I thought it was merely a simple tap beer. Upon smelling the aroma and taking a taste, I was addressed by my friend that it was not some simple beer. The owner had went out of his way and offered to me and several others, part of a 2008 3-Floyds Dark Lord.
Though this may sound sad, I actually shed a tear. Not because I was enjoying an amazing beer (for the first time), it was because he had personally showed a kindness which can hardly be found in this world anymore. He selflessly and sincerely offered unto us a beer which is prized not just as a highly regarded beverage, but one which had been provided to him as a gift in the past. I do not know about what others have experienced throughout the course of their life, but for me, this simple kind gesture was enough to make me not just want to go back to Trion for the beer, but go back because I know that the people who own and operate the establishment are not going to treat me as just a customer. Rather, they have shown me that they treat me and everyone else as a friend. For this simple fact alone, I will continue to enjoy the weeks, months, and years which I may spend at Trion, because I know that I am guaranteed not just an exceptional beverage, but an exceptional time.

Conclusion: With 42 taps available I have my work cut out for me along with anyone else who may experience Trion. The joy and happiness experienced will forever remain with me, and hopefully such thoughts and feeling will continue into the future. Thank you Trion Tavern and Thank You Greg.
Sincerely,
Jon

Finally made it to Trion. We were very impressed. They had 45 taps and not cluttered with BMC. 40 high quality craft brews. Bell's, 3 Floyds, Founders, Ommegang... Most of the stuff that is easy to find around here in a good beer store, but ON TAP and served in proper glassware. The owner spoke to us for a while. It is easy to see the amount of time, effort and pride he puts into his place. He said that he brings in new stuff frequently. The place was very clean and comfortable. I can't comment on the food because we were there strictly for the beer. Well worth a trip out of your way. I can't say enough good things about this place. Find it and you won't be disappointed.

Peace.

Great beer selection. Maybe 20 draft beers ranging from American crafts to solid Belgian and other European offerings. I've had stuff from Rogue, Bells, Dogfishhead, Founders, 3 Floyds, Delerium, etc. A nice balance of styles too, with solid pale ales, and IPAs, some good stout offerings and even some nice fruit styles. Their bottle selection is solid also, but the emphasis is on the drafts. Probably 30-40 different beers in 12 oz bottles and a couple of bombers. I recently had a 3 Floyds Behemoth and a BBC Homewrecker to split with some friends. The food is good with good variety. They have good tvs and a pool table and golden tee and one of those bowling games modeled off Golden T. The jut box is connected to the internet, so you can get almost anything to play. I go to this place a lot and if you're in the Fort Wayne area and want a good beer bar, this is the spot.

Greg, the owner, added another 20 taps a couple months back. Great selection. Only negative it the size of the serving. He has some really strong beers > 10% and everything is served in pints. So occasionally you pay $8-10 for a beer and don't get the opportunity to try as many things because you're over your limit after about 3 beers.

Finally, the Trion has been added to the Beeradvocate. This place has by far the best draft selection in the area. I am still surprised to this day how dedicated the Trion and its staff are to becoming one of the premire beer bars around Fort Wayne/New Haven. Right now there are 22 constantly changing taps with rumors of 20 more on the way. When this happens the Trion will be tough to beat. The food is good, St. Louis style ribs and broasted chicken seem to be their specialties. If you are visiting the area and like great beer you should definatley check this place out.

About time I re-wrote this 6/4/2009 :

Fantastic selection of taps. No one else in the area is even remotely close. Just upped the tap selection to 40 , almost all of them are extremely worthwhile. Expect to find on tap among others, several Belgian beers ( Delerium, Golden Draak, Chimay etc ), several beers from Bells, and several from Three Floyds, Dogfish Head 90 AND 120, and many others, many quite rare. The selection is nicely varied, and well thought out. Most are served in pint glasses, even many of the "big" beers, and prices are pretty reasonable as a rule.

Service has gotten better. Do keep in mind however that this is a neighborhood bar that was around for decades before they started serving good beer. Thus you are still going to get, at least for the time being, the feel of a typical, smokey Indiana macro bar that just happens to have taps from heaven. Nothing wrong with that, I guess, but it is a little different.

The only complaint I have would be the food. While Greg has improved the taps 1000%, the food actually seems to have gone downhill in recent years. I have tried just about everything on the menu, and, sadly, most of it is far from great. I have a feeling this is something Greg will address in the future. At least I hope so.

If you are looking for the finest selection of taps in the area by far, look no further than the Trion.

Edit 5/2012 - Had to knock the atmosphere way down due to the continued acceptance of smoking. I very seldom go to the Trion anymore even though I live very close. The smoking is just too much. It really is ridiculous to still allow it in this day and age.

Edit 7/2012 Finally,The Trion is now smoke free.

I am so excited they added the Trion. It's my favorite place in Fort Wayne, a true haven for BAers in the area.
Greg, the owner, is awesome. Super friendly, dedicated to delivering top-notch brews, he's poured some money into the place and I hope it's paying off for him. Just don't change the golden tee, I'm actually halfway adequate at the 2005 version!
Right now, he has 20 taps, and 16 or so of them are high end, in the past few months, Stone, Three Floyds, Bells, Victory, Founders, Mad Anthonys, and others I am blanking on have made an apperance. Also offers around 30 bottles, but it's the taps that keep me coming back. He's talking about 20 more taps and I get excited just thinking about it.
The food is perfectly decent, nothing stands out too much in either direction . . . the ribs and pork sandwich are pretty tasty.
Look forward to many more fun evenings at the Trion.
Edit-I bumped the food up a bit after having the patty melt the other night. Freaking fantastic. The 22 new taps look like it's a go, so when that happens, the selection is getting a bump as well. The prices have gone up a bit in the past few months, but plenty of the top-notch brews are still priced very reasonably.
Edit-The taps are in. I still love this place, but the prices are getting really high, multiple beers going for $10+. I have to stick to some of the stand bys that I know are 6-7 bucks becuase I just can't be dropping $10+/beer on stuff that isn't a known quantity. I hope Greg isn't pricing himself to high, then again he can always just scale back as needed and with the way he tracks the numbers, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.
