Bossanova sounded like a sure bet in downtown Alton. They opened at 5pm on Sunday, so we killed time at Tony's, a couple doors down, where they had a few basic crafts on tap with Six Row Whale being the highlight over there.

Inside the double door, there's a long bar along the left wall with a large framed vintage painting of an art nouveau female nude set into the back bar, flanked by spirits on either side. Beers were bottle only, and lined up along the lower right side of the back bar. Selection had some quality gems, though it was over 50% macros overall. Hopslam, Founders Breakfast Stout & Reds Rye, Matilda, plus a few other quality options. Service was a bit aloof when we sat at the bar (friends of the new waitress came in 5 min. later and were served first), but the veteran bartender came out after that and was very professional.

Crowd on a Sunday night was largely female with a pair of couples at the bar also. Two tiny flatscreen tv's at the bar were perfect without being a diversion. Mellow music played and the lighting was dim. Decor was artistic and funky, slightly upscale but it felt casual.

Food was good and affordable. We had a southwest salad and bacon wrapped scallops that were slightly chewy, but were served with a nice raspberry balsamic reduction. Overall it was a cool spot, no problem having a few beers here if you don't mind the lack of drafts. Close to other bars (Big Muddy, Ragin' Cajun, Tony's) if your feet get restless.

Visited on a Monday evening for dinner. Place was full with the end of the dinner crowd. Sat at the bar and order dinner.

Not much in Alton. Definitely a place to visit again.

Vibe – Not a beer bar, but a decent vibe. A great place to have a conversation and a good beer. 3.75

Selection – A good selection. Much better selection than is reflected in their menu (on-site or on-line). Sit at the bar or at least walk up and scan all the bottles. Locals as well as both east and west coast favorites. 4

Service – Great. Friendly folks at the bar. Don’t be afraid to ask for a change to the dish. Not necessarily beer folks. 4.

Quality – They ask if bottle, cold glass or room temp glass. But the glasses I used were not clean enough to prevent nucleation on the sides of the glass. 3.5

Food – Order a Boulevard Bob’s 47 Oktoberfest, a 4 Hands Cast Iron Oatmeal Brown and the Fish Tacos (a whole piece of fish to make my own). Could do better and serve some pico. 4

Price - $$ - Very good prices. $24 before tip for two beers and three fish tacos.

Considering that this place is only ten to fifteen minutes from my house,it is my default destination for good beer. That said,if this place was twenty to thirty minutes away,I would still frequent it.The atmosphere is good.Contemporary, clean space with a vibe somewhere between hipster and young Republican.Lately though,I've seen a pretty eclectic mix of people(which I like). The bartenders are cordial and knowledgeable. They offer 50 bottled beers with some standouts like Founder's Red's Rye PA,GI Matilda,Bell's Oberon,Great Divide Titan IPA,Flying Dog Gonzo Porter,Hitachino Nest and Lagunitas IPA.The owner is friendly, engaging and visible and seems to enjoy what he's doing. There is occasional live music and overall Bossanova is a definite must stop establishment in the Alton area.
