Advances in malting techniques made possible paler coloured malts and heralded the arrival of Pale Ales onto the brewing scene in the 1800s in Britain. The most famous Pale Ale brewers came from Burton, where the hard water perfectly suited this new style of beer. Propeller “Burtonizes” its water to emulate this famous style. Crisp, hoppy and dry, Propeller Pale Ale is a delightful interpretation of a classic British brew.

Look is a thick, hazy gold, almost amber. Pours with a fluffy white head about a finger thick that quickly faeds off, although it leaves plenty of lacing on the glass on the way down.
Smell is caramel with grapefruit cutting through. Some rose notes as well. Not particularly adventurous or strong, but focused and definite.
Taste is predominately grafefruit and some lemon fading to a base of caramel and malt. Honeydew also comes through. Bitterness is evident throughout and becomes stronger into the finish. Totally middle-of-the-road for the style.
Feel is thick but not particularly crisp. Carbonation is low to moderate. Fairly mellow and traditional in that way.
Overall, this is a well executed pale ale that doesn't stand out too much from the pack. The smell of it earns it a second look for its clarity and focus.

Bottle. Pours a gold than comes sort of close to copper. Aroma isn't too hoppy. Fairly sweet and grainy. A bit floral. Flavor is much of the same. Floral hops, caramel malt, graininess. Most of the Pale Ales I drink now are nothing like this classic interpretation. Not memorable.

A- Light Gold (but darker than an Adjunct) pour with 1 1/2 finger white head. A little lacing on the glass. Fairly Poor Head retention.
S- Sweet toffee/caramel aromas backed by a nice deep, earthy citrus.
T- Toffee with a little more caramel. Sweet maltiness backed by citrusy hops.
M- Medium body and carbonation.
O- A pretty good Pale Ale by an excellent East Coast brewery. Nice flavours and extremely drinkable. If Propeller makes a subpar beer, I haven't had it yet.

Bottle from the source.Pours a deep golden color with a smallish off white head that shows marginal retention. Aromas of toffee and caramel with hints of earthy citrus. The flavor follows the aroma and adds a bit more of that butterscotch that beer geeks up here seem to like. Medium body and level of carbonation. English inspired, okay brew.

Bottle to Glass
Appearance - clear, golden colour with a nice slightly off white head
Smell - Earthy, wood, a slight caramel smell with some malt
Taste - Some hop bitterness with a little caramel sweetness. Hops are present but are not overpowering. Maybe a touch of earth and floral tones as well
Overall - A great APA and widely available if you live in the Maritimes. Really pleasant to drink at anytime. Light enough to have more than one. I always have three or four of these in my fridge at anytime

Bottle from my boss' trip to Halifax.
A - Pours with a very small head that disappears really fast. Bright. Very mild carbonation. Lightish golden colour. No lacing and the head is totally gone quite fast.
S - Honey, floral, grainy. A little citrus.
T - Grainy, floral, honey maybe. Mild and lacking any American style hop profile until it opens up and you can find a little bit of citrus to redeem it.
M - Good carbonation with a medium body and a sweet finish.
O/D - Lacking any sort of appropriate hop profile for the style and overly sweet/grainy. Third weak beer of the night. Easy to drink but doesn't appear to be a proper American style Pale Ale. Easy to drink but not worth seeking out or tasty in any way. Not offensive, just not a tasty beer...Once it opened up it came through with some citrus but still alot weaker than I was hoping. Needs work.
